Chapter 8: The Truth My Mother Had Hidden

I called my mother at 7:42 the next morning.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“Marcus? Is everything okay?””

I looked at the documents spread across my kitchen island.

“No, Mom. It isn't.””

There was a pause.

“What happened?””

“Do you remember Renee's trust?””

Her breathing changed.

I noticed immediately.

“Why are you asking about that?””

“Because Denise and Eric have been trying to access it.””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“Oh, Marcus.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“Can we talk in person?””

“Not until you tell me whether you signed something.””

Another pause.

Then she said:

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“What did you sign?””

“Your mother is coming over,” I told Malik after ending the call.

He was sitting at the kitchen island eating cereal.

“Grandma?””

“Yes.””

“Is she in trouble?””

I looked at him.

“I don't know yet.””

He lowered his spoon.

“Dad, is Grandma part of what happened?””

I didn't answer immediately.

“I need to hear her side.””

He nodded.

Then he asked:

“Can you promise she won't make me go somewhere?””

I reached across the counter.

“Nobody is sending you away.””

At ten, my mother arrived.

Margaret Johnson was seventy years old.

She had raised me after my father died when I was fifteen.

She was a strong woman who rarely showed fear.

But that morning, she walked into my kitchen looking as though she'd aged ten years overnight.

She placed her purse on a chair.

“Where's Malik?””

“Upstairs.””

She looked toward the hallway.

“Is he okay?””

“He's safe.””

She sat down.

I placed Renee's letter in front of her.

“Tell me what happened.””

My mother stared at the handwriting.

Then she covered her mouth.

“I should have told you.””

I sat across from her.

“Start at the beginning.””

She took a long breath.

“After Renee became ill, she asked me to help with some paperwork. She was worried about Malik's future.””

I nodded.

“She told me she had created a trust.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you sign a transfer document?””

My mother looked down.

“Because Eric told me the paperwork was necessary.””

I stared at her.

“What paperwork?””

“He said Renee had asked him to help organize the property. He told me the trust needed a temporary administrative change.””

“Did you read it?””

She closed her eyes.

“I thought I understood it.””

“Mom.””

“I know.””

“What did you sign?””

She opened her purse and removed a folded document.

“I kept a copy.””

I took it.

The document was dated six years earlier.

It authorized a temporary change in administrative control over a portion of the trust.

The signature appeared to belong to my mother.

I looked at the witness line.

Eric Carter.

My jaw tightened.

“Did Renee know?””

My mother nodded.

“She found out two days later.””

“What happened?””

“She called me.””

My mother began crying.

“She was furious. She said I had no right to sign anything involving Malik's inheritance.””

I sat back.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because she asked me not to.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“She said she wanted to resolve it quietly. She was afraid that if you got involved, you would confront Eric and make everything worse.””

I looked at the document.

“Did she reverse the transfer?””

My mother nodded.

“She contacted Eleanor. They restored the trust.””

“Then why is Eric trying again?””

“I don't know.””

She wiped her eyes.

Then she reached into her purse again.

“There is something else.””

She placed a small envelope on the counter.

It was addressed to me.

The handwriting was Renee's.

My mother explained that Renee had given it to her shortly before she died.

“She told me to keep it until you were ready to hear the truth.””

I stared at her.

“What truth?””

My mother looked toward the stairs.

Then back at me.

“Renee knew Denise was interested in you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She told me Denise had approached her several times. Renee believed Denise wanted to get close to you because of the property.””

I felt sick.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I thought Renee was frightened and confused. She was very ill. I thought she might be seeing danger where there wasn't any.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a short letter.

Marcus,

I know you want to believe that people have good intentions. That's one of the things I love most about you.

But sometimes people recognize kindness as an opportunity.

If Denise becomes part of your life, please remember that she once asked me whether you would be willing to marry again.

I stopped.

I read the sentence twice.

She asked whether you were lonely enough to accept someone who could help raise Malik.

My hands went cold.

I told her you would always love Malik more than you loved convenience.

She laughed.

I lowered the letter.

My mother began crying harder.

“Renee told me she thought Denise was watching you.””

I looked at her.

“Watching me?””

“She knew where you worked. She knew your schedule. She knew when you took Malik to school.””

I stood.

“Mom, how did Denise meet me?””

My mother wiped her face.

“Through Eric.””

I felt the room tilt.

“Eric introduced us at that charity dinner.””

“Yes.””

I remembered that evening.

A business fundraiser.

Eric had invited me.

Denise had been there.

She'd approached me near the bar and complimented the way I spoke about Malik.

She'd told me she admired single fathers.

I'd thought it was a coincidence.

Now I wondered whether any part of it had been accidental.

My mother continued.

“Renee begged me not to let anyone change Malik's trust.””

“Did she tell you she suspected Denise?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the letter again.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Did Renee believe Denise was involved in what happened before she died?””

My mother shook her head.

“She never said that.””

“Did she believe Eric was?””

My mother hesitated.

Then she nodded.

I felt a cold weight settle in my stomach.

Before I could speak, the front door opened.

Malik came downstairs.

“Grandma?””

My mother stood immediately.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

She walked toward him.

He didn't move.

For a moment, I saw the little boy he had been before everything changed.

My mother slowly crouched.

“Can I hug you?””

Malik looked at me.

I nodded.

He stepped forward.

She embraced him.

Then she began sobbing.

“I'm so sorry, baby.””

Malik stiffened.

“Why?””

My mother pulled back.

“Because I should have protected you.””

He looked confused.

“Did you know Denise wasn't giving me lunch?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“No. I didn't know that.””

“Did you know she told me Dad might send me away?””

My mother's face crumpled.

“No.””

Malik lowered his eyes.

“Everybody knew things except me.””

I felt my throat tighten.

I knelt beside him.

“Buddy, none of this is your fault.””

He nodded.

My mother held his hand.

“I want to make this right.””

Malik didn't answer.

Then my phone rang.

It was David.

“Marcus, we have a problem.””

“What happened?””

“The property company just filed an emergency petition claiming authority over the trust.””

My stomach dropped.

“On what grounds?””

“They're alleging that Renee had previously authorized a transfer before her death.””

I looked at the document my mother had signed.

“But the transfer was reversed.””

“We know. Eleanor has the original records. However, the company is also claiming that your mother witnessed a separate agreement.””

I turned toward Margaret.

She shook her head.

“I didn't sign anything else.””

David continued.

“We need to move quickly. There's a hearing scheduled for next week.””

I gripped the phone.

“Can they take Malik's property?””

“Not if we establish the documents are invalid and protect the trust. But I need every original record.””

I agreed.

Then David said:

“One more thing. Denise's attorney has contacted us.””

“What does she want?””

“She wants to negotiate a settlement.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“About what?””

David paused.

“She wants to withdraw her claims against the property in exchange for a substantial payment.””

“How much?””

“Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.””

I laughed in disbelief.

“She wants us to pay her?””

“That's what she's proposing.””

I looked at Malik.

He was standing beside my mother.

He had heard enough to understand that something was happening.

I turned away.

“Tell her no.””

David was silent for a moment.

“Marcus, I expected that answer.””

“Then why ask?””

“Because I wanted to be sure.””

I ended the call.

My mother was staring at me.

“What are you going to do?””

I looked at the letter Renee had left behind.

Then at the trust documents.

Then at Malik.

“I'm going to make sure nobody ever uses my son as leverage again.””

That afternoon, Eleanor called.

She had discovered something in Renee's original estate file.

A handwritten note dated two days before Renee died.

It contained a name.

Not Denise.

Not Eric.

Someone else.

Someone who had been listed as the emergency contact for the trust.

Eleanor read it aloud.

“Marcus, the person Renee trusted to protect Malik's inheritance was…”

She paused.

Then she said:

“Your brother, Daniel Johnson.””

I went completely still.

May you like

My brother had died four years earlier.

And suddenly, I realized Renee had arranged something before anyone knew he would be gone.
