Chapter 7: The Voice From Six Years Ago
Eleanor placed a small digital recorder on the desk.
It was an older model.
A strip of masking tape was attached to the back.
Renee's handwriting appeared across it.
For Marcus and Malik.
I stared at it.
“Has anyone listened to this?””
“Only I have. Renee specifically instructed me not to release it unless her husband or son requested it.””
I swallowed.
“Play it.””
Eleanor pressed a button.
A soft crackling sound filled the office.
Then I heard Renee's voice.
“Marcus, if you're listening to this, I hope you're sitting down.””
My eyes immediately filled.
Her voice sounded tired.
But it was unmistakably hers.
“First, I need you to know that I love you. I love Malik. And nothing that happens after I'm gone changes that.””
I closed my eyes.
The recording continued.
“I've been investigating something involving our financial documents. Someone attempted to alter the beneficiary information on Malik's trust.””
I opened my eyes.
“I don't know who did it. I have suspicions, but I don't want to accuse anyone without proof.””
There was a pause.
Then Renee continued.
“Marcus, if Denise ever becomes part of your life, please don't let anyone rush you into financial decisions involving Malik.””
I looked at Eleanor.
She remained still.
Renee's voice continued.
“I met Denise through Eric. She told me she wanted to help families organize their estates. At first, I believed her.””
My throat tightened.
“Then she started asking questions about my illness, my insurance, and whether Marcus had considered remarrying.””
The recording crackled.
“She asked whether a new wife would automatically become responsible for Malik's inheritance.””
I gripped the edge of the desk.
“I told her no.””
Renee took a breath.
“She became upset. She said I was making things unnecessarily complicated.””
I could barely breathe.
“Marcus, I need you to promise me something. If you ever hear that Malik is difficult, ungrateful, or impossible to love, remember who he was before anyone started telling you those things.””
A tear rolled down my cheek.
“He is a beautiful boy. He is sensitive. He asks too many questions sometimes.
He cries when animals get hurt. He still sleeps with the stuffed bear we bought him at the zoo.””
I laughed through my tears.
I remembered that bear.
He still had it.
“Please don't let anyone make him feel like he is a burden.””
The recording went quiet.
Then Renee spoke again.
“One more thing. Eric told me he was interested in investing in the property your grandfather left you. I refused to involve him.””
My stomach tightened.
“He became angry. He said I was preventing him from helping the family.””
There was a long pause.
Then she said:
“If something happens to me, I want you to investigate every document signed by Eric Carter.””
The recording ended.
I sat motionless.
For six years, I had believed Denise entered our lives by chance.
I had believed her relationship with Malik had simply become strained after we married.
But Renee had known her.
Renee had warned me.
And I had never seen the warning.
Eleanor gently placed a tissue box beside me.
“I'm sorry.””
I wiped my face.
“Why didn't you contact me?””
“Renee asked me to wait unless there was an attempt to interfere with Malik's trust.””
“Has there been one?””
Eleanor opened the folder.
“Yes.””
She showed me a document filed eight months earlier.
It was an inquiry requesting information about the trust's administration.
The requesting party was a company called Carter Family Holdings.
I recognized the name.
It was the company David had discovered in the property records.
I looked up.
“Did Denise submit this?””
“Her brother did. But the contact information belongs to Denise.””
I leaned back.
“Why would they need access to Malik's trust?””
Eleanor's expression became serious.
“Because the trust contains more than money.””
She removed a property deed.
It listed a commercial parcel in northern Georgia.
I recognized the address.
It was the land my grandfather had owned.
He had left it to Renee before she died.
I had assumed she'd sold it years earlier.
“She didn't sell this?””
“No. She placed it into Malik's trust.””
I stared at the document.
The property was worth considerably more than I expected.
Eleanor explained that developers had recently begun purchasing nearby parcels for a major commercial project.
The land could be worth several million dollars.
My mouth went dry.
“So that's what this is about.””
“Possibly. We have to establish exactly what they intended to do.””
I thought about the recordings.
The trust.
The house.
The attempt to remove Malik from the household.
Everything suddenly connected.
They didn't simply want my house.
They wanted access to Malik's inheritance.
And they believed removing him from my daily life would make that easier.
I left Eleanor's office and called David.
He agreed to meet me immediately.
When I arrived, he had already reviewed the documents.
“Marcus, we need to separate the issues,” he said.
“The attempted financial changes, the property transactions, and the concerns about Malik's welfare all need proper investigation.””
“Can we stop them?””
“We can take steps to protect the assets, notify the relevant institutions, and pursue legal remedies if the evidence supports them.””
“Do it.””
He nodded.
Then he showed me another document.
It was a proposed property sale agreement.
The buyer was Carter Family Holdings.
The seller was listed as Malik Johnson's trust.
But Malik was thirteen.
He hadn't signed anything.
And neither had I.
I stared at the signature line.
It was the same forged signature from the insurance document.
My name.
I looked at David.
“Who witnessed this?””
He pointed to the bottom.
Eric Carter.
I felt anger rise again.
But David raised a hand.
“Don't contact him. Let us handle this.””
I agreed.
That evening, I picked Malik up from school.
He was waiting outside with Mrs. Brooks.
She smiled when she saw me.
“Mr. Johnson.””
“Thank you for everything.””
She nodded.
“Malik has been doing better today. He ate lunch with two friends.””
I looked at my son.
“That's good, buddy.””
He smiled faintly.
On the drive home, he told me about a science assignment.
For the first time in weeks, he sounded like a normal thirteen-year-old.
He complained about homework.
He talked about a basketball game.
He asked whether we could order pizza.
I told him we could.
When we arrived home, I noticed a car parked across the street.
It was Eric's black SUV.
My stomach tightened.
I told Malik to stay inside.
Then I walked toward the vehicle.
Eric stepped out.
He wore a dark jacket and held a manila folder.
“Marcus.””
I stopped several feet away.
“What are you doing here?””
“We need to talk.””
“No, we don't.””
He looked toward the house.
“Denise told me you found the documents.””
I said nothing.
He sighed.
“Listen, I know things look bad.””
“Then explain the forged signatures.””
His expression changed.
“That's not what happened.””
“Explain the property sale agreement.””
He looked down.
“Marcus, you're making a mistake.””
I laughed without humor.
“You've been trying to take money from a child.””
Eric stepped closer.
“It's not that simple.””
“Then make it simple.””
He glanced toward the house again.
Then he lowered his voice.
“Renee wasn't supposed to leave everything to Malik.””
My entire body went still.
“What did you say?””
He swallowed.
“She made promises she couldn't keep.””
I stepped closer.
“What promises?””
Eric looked at me.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Ask your mother what happened to the original trust documents.””
I stared at him.
“My mother?””
He nodded.
“Your mother knows exactly why Renee changed everything.””
Before I could ask another question, he climbed back into his SUV.
“Don't make this worse, Marcus.””
He drove away.
I stood in the driveway, staring after him.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
Your mother has been lying to you for six years. Ask her why she signed the first transfer document.
I read it twice.
Then I looked toward the house.
Malik was watching me through the front window.
May you like
And I realized the next person I needed answers from was someone I had trusted my entire life.
My own mother.
