Chapter 5: The Accusation That Could Destroy My Son
The words hung in the air.
Jordan looked from Danielle to me, his face drained of color.
“Dad, I didn't take anything.””
“I haven't accused you of taking anything,” I replied.
Danielle descended the final steps and placed her black bag on the sofa.
“Three hundred dollars disappeared from my purse last month,” she said.
“It was in my bedroom. Jordan was the only other person in the house that afternoon.””
“That doesn't prove I took it!”” Jordan protested.
“Then explain why you were upstairs.””
“I was looking for my headphones!””
“In my bedroom?””
“No! In the hallway closet!””
Danielle turned to me.
“Do you hear how quickly he changes his story?””
I stepped between her and Jordan.
“He hasn't changed his story. You asked him two questions, and he answered both.””
“He's lying.””
“Then show me the evidence.””
She opened her bag and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“Here's something you might find interesting.””
She handed it to me.
It was a printed screenshot of a text message, supposedly from Jordan to someone named Ethan.
I need cash fast. Don't tell my dad.
Below it was another line.
I'll pay you back when I get it.
I looked at the page, then at my son.
“Have you ever sent this message?””
“No!””
“Do you know what it's about?””
“No, Dad. I swear.””
Danielle crossed her arms.
“Of course he'll deny it.””
I studied the screenshot. It showed no phone number, no date, and no visible application interface. Just two lines of text printed on ordinary white paper.
“Where did you get this?””
“From his phone.””
“When?””
“Last month.””
“Why didn't you show me then?””
“Because I was trying to give him a chance to tell the truth.””
Jordan stared at her in disbelief.
“You never asked me!””
“Don't raise your voice at me.””
“You're saying I stole money and lied about it!””
“Jordan,” I said quietly, “take a breath.””
He looked at me, his eyes shining.
“But Dad—”
“I know you're upset. Let me handle this.””
He pressed his lips together and stepped back.
I turned to Danielle.
“If you found this last month, why are you bringing it up now?””
“Because I'm tired of protecting him.””
“Protecting him from what?””
“From consequences!””
She gestured toward Jordan.
“He takes things, he lies, and you act like he's incapable of doing anything wrong.””
I felt the anger rising again, but I forced myself to remain calm.
“I'm not saying Jordan is incapable of making mistakes. I'm saying I won't accept a serious accusation without examining the evidence.””
“You always need evidence when it's about him.””
“Yes. That's how fairness works.””
Danielle laughed sharply.
“Fairness. You keep using that word as if you know what it means.””
I placed the screenshot on the coffee table.
“Then let's establish some facts. You say three hundred dollars disappeared from your purse last month. Do you have a bank withdrawal record, a note about when you last saw it, or anything that establishes when it went missing?””
She stared at me.
“It was cash.””
“I understand that. I'm asking whether you documented the loss.””
“No. I didn't think I needed to build a legal case against a child.””
“Yet you printed a screenshot from his phone.””
Her expression tightened.
I continued.
“And if this happened last month, why did you wait until tonight to mention it? Why bring it up immediately after Kiara revealed the recordings?””
For the first time, Danielle looked toward her daughter.
Kiara had been standing near the kitchen doorway, gripping the edge of the counter.
“Tell him,” Danielle snapped.
Kiara flinched.
“Tell him what?””
“That you saw Jordan take the money.””
“I didn't.””
“You were in the hallway!””
“I saw him walking downstairs. I didn't see him take anything.””
Danielle's mouth fell open.
“You told me you thought he'd been in my room.””
“I said I saw him in the hallway. You asked me if I thought he might have taken it, and I said I didn't know.””
“You're changing your story!””
“No, Mom. You're changing what I said.””
Danielle grabbed the screenshot and waved it in the air.
“Then how do you explain this?””
“I don't know,” Kiara replied.
“But it doesn't prove he stole anything.””
Danielle looked as though she might explode.
I raised a hand.
“Enough. No one is going to keep interrogating these children tonight.””
She turned toward me.
“Children? Jordan is almost a man. He knows exactly what he's doing.””
“He's fifteen.””
“Old enough to understand right from wrong.””
“Then he is also old enough to deserve a fair process when someone accuses him of a crime.””
She stared at me.
“Are you saying you don't believe me?””
“I'm saying I don't know what happened to the money, and neither do you unless you have evidence you haven't shown me.””
She snatched her bag from the sofa.
“Fine. Keep protecting him.””
“Danielle, sit down.””
“No.””
“Then answer one question before you go upstairs. Did you create that screenshot?””
Her head snapped toward me.
“How dare you?””
“Did you create it?””
“You think I'm capable of fabricating evidence against a child?””
I didn't answer.
She looked at Jordan.
“Your father has made his choice. Remember that when you destroy this family.””
Then she marched upstairs.
A bedroom door slammed.
Jordan stood motionless in the middle of the living room.
“Dad?””
I turned to him.
“Yeah?””
“Do you think I took the money?””
The question struck me harder than the accusation itself.
“No,” I said.
“I have no reason to believe you did.””
He swallowed.
“But what if she shows someone that screenshot?””
“Then we examine where it came from and whether it's authentic.””
“What if people believe it?””
“Some people may believe it before they know the facts. That's why we don't make decisions based on panic.””
His shoulders sagged.
“I didn't take anything from her. I don't even go into her room.””
“I know.””
He rubbed his eyes.
“I hate this.””
I pulled him into another hug.
“I know, son.””
He rested his forehead against my shoulder.
“I wish Mom were still here.””
The words slipped out before he could stop them.
His mother, Elena, had died when Jordan was nine. For years, we had learned to live with the empty spaces she left behind: the missing voice at the dinner table, the birthday cards that would never arrive, the quiet moments when Jordan still reached for his phone to tell her something before remembering.
I held him tighter.
“Your mom would want you to stand up for yourself,” I whispered.
“She would want you to tell the truth and trust the people who love you.””
Jordan nodded against my shoulder.
When he finally went upstairs, I remained in the living room with Kiara.
She stood beside the coffee table, staring at the screenshot.
“I'm sorry,” she said.
“You don't have to apologize for something you didn't do.””
“I should have told you about the money earlier.””
“Did your mother tell you Jordan took it?””
Kiara nodded.
“She said she found the messages on his phone. She kept asking whether I'd seen him in her room. After a while, I started wondering if I had missed something.””
“Did you see the screenshot before tonight?””
“No.””
“Did you know she planned to show it to me?””
Kiara shook her head.
“I thought she was just angry. I didn't know she was going to accuse him of stealing.””
I took a slow breath.
“Kiara, I need you to tell me something, and I need you to be completely honest. Did your mother ever ask you to put anything in Jordan's room, use his phone, or make it look like he had done something?””
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
I watched her carefully.
“Think about it.””
“I am. No, she never asked me to do that.””
“Did she ask you to delete messages or hide any files?””
Kiara hesitated.
The pause was brief, but it was there.
“What is it?”” I asked.
She looked down.
“About two weeks ago, she asked me to delete a conversation from her laptop. She said it was personal and that I shouldn't have seen it.””
“What conversation?””
“I don't know. She closed it before I could read much. But I remember the name at the top.””
“Whose name?””
“Grant.””
My stomach tightened.
“Was that the same Grant from the recordings?””
“I think so.””
“What did the message say?””
Kiara closed her eyes, trying to remember.
“There was something about the transfer. And something about Jordan's room.””
I stared at her.
“Jordan's room?””
She nodded.
“I only saw one line before Mom shut the laptop.””
“What did it say?””
Kiara's voice became almost inaudible.
“Something like, 'Once the boy is out, make sure the room is cleared before Marcus checks anything.''”
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“Why would he care about Jordan's room?””
“I don't know.””
I looked toward the staircase.
For the first time, I wondered whether the accusations against my son were not merely an attempt to force him out.
Perhaps someone needed him gone before I discovered something already hidden inside the house.
I took the screenshot from the coffee table and examined it again.
The message claimed to be from Jordan to Ethan. But Ethan's name had never appeared in the visible sender information. There was no date, no phone number, and no proof that the message had ever existed outside that piece of paper.
I pulled out my phone and called David.
He answered immediately.
“Marcus?””
“I need you to find the lawyer's number. Tonight.””
“What's happened?””
“Danielle has made another accusation against Jordan. This time, she's claiming he stole money and has produced a screenshot I can't verify.””
“Don't confront her again without advice. Preserve everything you've found, and don't alter the files.””
“That's what I'm doing.””
“Good. I'll send you the contact details.””
I ended the call and looked at Kiara.
“Where is your mother's laptop now?””
“In her bedroom.””
“Can you access it?””
She shook her head quickly.
“No. She changed the password yesterday.””
“Did she tell you why?””
Kiara's lips trembled.
“She said she needed to protect herself from people who wanted to take her family away.””
I glanced at the staircase again.
A soft sound came from upstairs.
Not footsteps.
A drawer sliding open.
Then another.
Kiara turned pale.
“She's looking for something.””
“What?””
“I don't know.””
We listened.
A door opened. Something heavy struck the floor. Then Danielle shouted from the bedroom.
“Where is it?””
I started toward the stairs.
Kiara grabbed my arm.
“Dad, wait.””
I stopped.
She looked at me with terror in her eyes.
“Mom doesn't know I saw the other folder.””
“What other folder?””
“The one she keeps hidden behind the bottom drawer in her closet.””
I felt my heartbeat quicken.
“What is in it?””
Kiara swallowed.
“I saw my name on the front. And Jordan's.””
Before I could ask another question, Danielle appeared at the top of the stairs.
Her face was white, and her hands were shaking.
She stared at me.
Then she said five words that changed everything.
“Marcus, don't let Jordan go upstairs.””
I looked past her toward the dark hallway.
“Why?””
Her lips parted.
For one second, she looked like a woman who had finally realized the consequences of what she had done.
May you like
Then a loud crash came from inside Jordan's bedroom.
And Danielle whispered, “Because someone has already been in there.””
