Chapter 4: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear

I didn't reach for the USB drive immediately.

Jordan held it between two fingers, turning it over and over as if it were something dangerous.

“Where did you get this?”” I asked.

“Kiara's laptop.””

“Did she give it to you?””

He shook his head.

“She didn't know we found it. We were trying to fix the laptop, and a folder kept appearing every time we opened the file manager. Ethan said it looked like somebody had saved audio recordings there.””

“Did you listen to them?””

“Just one.””

I watched his face.

“Why didn't you tell me on Friday?””

“Because I didn't know what it meant. And I didn't want to get Kiara in trouble.””

That answer sounded painfully like my son.

Even after being accused, he was still thinking about how to protect the girl whose mother had tried to force him out of his own home.

I held out my hand.

“May I?””

Jordan passed me the drive.

“Dad, there's something else.””

I paused.

“What?””

“The recording wasn't the only thing we found.””

He glanced toward the hallway.

“There were screenshots, too. Messages between Danielle and somebody named Grant.””

“Who is Grant?””

“I don't know. But he kept asking her when the paperwork would be ready.””

My fingers tightened around the drive.

“Did you read the messages?””

“Some of them. We didn't want to open everything. Ethan said we should stop and tell an adult.””

“For once, Ethan sounds like the smartest person in the room.””

Jordan gave a small, nervous smile.

I stood and retrieved my laptop from the study.

We sat together at the kitchen table while the evening light faded beyond the window. I inserted the drive and waited for the files to appear.

There were six audio recordings, several screenshots, and a folder containing scanned documents.

The first recording was only a few seconds long. The second contained the sound of a television and someone moving dishes around.

The third file was dated nine days earlier.

I clicked it.

Danielle's voice came through the speakers.

“I'm telling you, Marcus won't sign anything if he thinks Jordan's future is at risk.””

A man's voice answered.

“Then stop presenting it as Jordan's future. Make it about protecting the household.””

“I've tried. He keeps saying we need a lawyer.””

“Then you need to give him a reason to act quickly.””

There was a pause.

Danielle sighed.

“He won't listen unless he thinks something is wrong with the boy.””

My stomach clenched.

The man spoke again.

“Be careful. If you create a problem, you need to make sure you can control where it leads.””

“I can handle Marcus.””

I stopped the recording.

Jordan sat very still beside me.

“Dad?””

I looked at him.

“I'm here.””

“She was talking about me, wasn't she?””

I couldn't lie to him.

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“Why?””

I reached for his hand.

“I don't know yet.””

“But she wanted you to think I did something bad.””

“Yes.””

He pulled his hand away and stood abruptly.

“I knew it.””

“Jordan—”

“I knew she hated me!””

“Sit down.””

“No!””

His voice cracked, and he shoved his chair backward.

“She always looks at me like I'm in the way. Every time you buy me something, she asks whether I really need it. When I make noise, she tells me Kiara needs peace. When I watch TV, she says I'm taking over the living room.””

He pressed both hands against his face.

“I thought maybe I was just being annoying. I tried to stay out of her way.””

My chest ached.

“Come here.””

He shook his head.

“I'm fifteen, Dad. I shouldn't have to beg someone to let me live in my own house.””

“You don't.””

“Then why did she do this?””

I had no answer that could make sense of it.

I stood and pulled him into a hug. For a moment, he resisted, his shoulders rigid with anger. Then he folded against me and began to cry.

I held him until his breathing steadied.

When he finally stepped back, he wiped his face with his sleeve.

“I don't want to listen to any more of it.””

“That's okay.””

“But you need to know something.””

I waited.

“Kiara didn't want to do this. She told me she was sorry before any of us knew about the recording. I think she's scared of her mom.””

I nodded slowly.

“We'll make sure she's safe, too.””

I copied the files to a secure folder on my laptop, then disconnected the drive.

I wasn't going to edit anything, delete anything, or send it to people in anger. If the recordings were genuine, I wanted a lawyer to review them and tell me how to preserve them properly.

But first, I needed to understand the rest.

I opened the screenshots.

The messages between Danielle and Grant stretched back nearly two months.

Some were ordinary discussions about paperwork. Others referred to the house, my finances, and the problem of getting me to agree to a transfer.

Then I found one dated four days earlier.

*Grant:* You need to settle the issue with the boy before Marcus changes his mind.

*Danielle:* I'm working on it.

*Grant:* You said the daughter would cooperate.

*Danielle:* She will. She just needs to understand what's at stake.

*Grant:* And if she refuses?

*Danielle:* She won't. She knows what happens if Marcus decides to investigate.

I read the exchange twice.

“What happens if I investigate?”” I whispered.

Jordan leaned closer to the screen.

“Dad, look at the next one.””

The message beneath it was dated the following morning.

*Danielle:* I need another week. Once he believes Jordan is the problem, he'll do whatever it takes to keep the house peaceful.

*Grant:* Don't overplay your hand. If he gets suspicious, the plan falls apart.

I leaned back.

A cold, steady anger began replacing the shock.

This wasn't an argument that had spiraled out of control. Someone had been planning something. Danielle had been discussing my house, my son, and the way to pressure me into making a decision.

I took photographs of the screen with my phone and wrote down the file names and dates. Then I called David again.

“I need a lawyer,” I said.

“Property lawyer?””

“Property, family law, and someone who can advise me about preserving digital evidence. I don't know what we're dealing with yet.””

“Are you safe?””

I looked toward the hallway.

“Yes. But I don't want to make a move before I understand everything.””

“I'll get you a name.””

“Don't call Danielle. Don't contact Grant. And don't discuss this with anyone else.””

“Understood.””

After we hung up, Jordan helped me close the laptop.

“Are you going to confront her?”” he asked.

“Not tonight.””

“Why not?””

“Because I don't want to accuse someone without understanding the whole picture. I also don't want to give anyone an opportunity to destroy something important.””

He considered that.

“Like in those detective shows where they need evidence?””

“Exactly.””

“Except this is our house.””

I looked at him.

“Yes. It is.””

A floorboard creaked behind us.

Kiara stood in the doorway, her face pale.

“How much did you hear?”” I asked.

“Enough.””

Jordan immediately stood.

“Kiara, I didn't mean to get you in trouble.””

She shook her head.

“You didn't.””

Her eyes moved to the laptop.

“You found the recordings?””

I nodded.

She sank into a chair.

“I knew Mom had been doing something, but I didn't know how far she was going to take it.””

“Why didn't you tell me?”” I asked gently.

Kiara stared at her hands.

“Because she said if I told you, you'd throw us both out. She said we'd have nowhere to go, and it would be my fault.””

“You're seventeen, Kiara. You are not responsible for your mother's decisions.””

She gave a bitter little laugh.

“That's what everyone says until something goes wrong.””

Jordan sat across from her.

“You didn't have to lie about me.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you?””

Kiara's eyes filled.

“Because I was scared she'd turn on me, too.””

Nobody spoke for a while.

Then she looked at me.

“There's something else. The recording you heard isn't the worst one.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

“Mom had another conversation with Grant yesterday. I heard it through her bedroom door.””

“What did she say?””

Kiara took a shaky breath.

“She said that if the first accusation didn't make you act, she would tell you something even worse.””

“Something worse than saying Jordan was staring at you?””

Kiara nodded.

“She said she'd make you believe he had done something that could get him arrested.””

Jordan's face went white.

I stood so abruptly that my chair scraped across the floor.

“Did she say what she was planning to accuse him of?””

Kiara looked toward the staircase.

Before she could answer, Danielle's voice rang out from the upper landing.

“Get away from my daughter.””

We all turned.

She stood at the top of the stairs holding a small black bag. Her eyes were fixed on the laptop.

“You had no right to go through her files,” she said.

I closed the computer.

“Then explain what's in them.””

She began descending.

“You have no idea what you've just done.””

“Then tell me.””

She stopped three steps from the bottom.

Her voice dropped.

“Ask Jordan what he did with the money that disappeared from my purse last month.””

Jordan stared at her.

“What money?””

May you like

Danielle lifted her chin.

“Now we're finally going to talk about the real problem.””
