Chapter 9: The Letter Nobody Was Supposed to Read

The house was silent after Vanessa left.

Dad locked the front door.

Daniel immediately called his office.

Margaret sat at the dining table, staring at the papers Richard had left behind.

I stood beside my father.

"Daddy?""

He looked down.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Is there another child?""

Dad's expression changed.

"What?""

"Vanessa said there's another beneficiary.""

He knelt in front of me.

"Your mother and I never had another child.""

I frowned.

"Then who?""

Dad looked toward Margaret.

She slowly removed the USB drive from the envelope.

"There's something we need to watch.""

Daniel connected it to his laptop.

A video file appeared.

The date on the screen was almost four years old.

Dad sat down.

Margaret placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Marcus, are you ready?""

He nodded.

Daniel pressed play.

At first, the screen was dark.

Then Mom appeared.

She was sitting in a small office.

Her hair was shorter than I remembered, and she wore the blue cardigan she used to wear when baking.

I gasped.

"Mommy.""

Dad covered his mouth.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Mom smiled.

"If you're watching this, it means something happened that I wanted to prepare you for.""

Her voice was soft.

I hadn't heard it in years.

I moved closer to the screen.

"Marcus, I hope you never have to watch this. But if you do, please understand that I made these arrangements because I love you both.""

Dad's eyes filled.

Mom continued.

"I have always believed that a child's security should never depend on the kindness of another adult.""

She paused.

Then she looked directly into the camera.

"Especially when that child has already lost so much.""

Dad lowered his head.

Mom continued.

"The Carter family property includes more than the house and investment accounts. There is also a separate charitable fund.""

Daniel looked up.

"That's the other beneficiary.""

Margaret nodded.

The video continued.

"Years ago, my parents helped establish a small foundation for children who have lost a parent or been displaced from their homes.""

I stared at the screen.

Mom smiled.

"I wanted Maya to grow up knowing that her life could become something beautiful, even after losing me.""

Dad wiped his eyes.

"The foundation is intended to help children with housing, education, and legal support. Maya will eventually have a role in its management, but she will not inherit the foundation itself.""

I frowned.

"What's a foundation?""

Margaret leaned toward me.

"It's a fund that helps people.""

"Like a charity?""

"Exactly.""

Mom's voice continued.

"One day, if Maya chooses, she can help other children who feel unwanted. Children who have been told they don't belong somewhere.""

I felt tears gathering.

Mom looked down briefly.

Then she raised her eyes again.

"Marcus, there's another thing I need you to know.""

Dad leaned forward.

"The property records I discovered before making this recording were not complete. I found evidence that someone had attempted to redirect rental income from one of the family properties.""

Daniel sat straighter.

"That's the discrepancy.""

Mom continued.

"I don't know who was responsible. I also don't know whether the person acted alone.""

She paused.

"But I have preserved the original documents.""

Margaret opened the folder beside her.

"Here.""

She handed Daniel a sealed envelope.

He examined it.

"This is the original audit.""

Dad looked at him.

"Can it establish who was involved?""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Potentially.""

Mom's video continued.

"If anyone tries to change the ownership arrangements, contact Margaret. She knows where the original records are.""

Mom smiled sadly.

"Most importantly, Maya, if you're watching this someday, I want you to remember something.""

I moved closer to the screen.

"You are not a burden.""

Her voice trembled slightly.

"You are not an inconvenience. You are not a replacement for me, and you are not responsible for making the adults around you happy.""

I began crying.

Mom continued.

"You deserve a home where you can laugh without being afraid. A home where your questions are welcome. A home where nobody makes you feel guilty for being loved.""

Dad put his hand over mine.

"Your father will always love you.""

Mom smiled.

"And if he ever forgets how strong he is, remind him that I chose him because I knew he would be a wonderful father.""

The screen went dark.

Nobody moved.

Then Dad began crying.

Not quietly.

He covered his face with both hands.

I climbed into his lap and wrapped my arms around his neck.

"I miss her too," I whispered.

He held me tightly.

"I know, sweetheart.""

For several minutes, we stayed that way.

Then Daniel spoke.

"Marcus, we need to discuss the audit.""

Dad slowly lifted his head.

"Go ahead.""

Daniel opened the envelope.

He examined several pages.

Then he looked at Margaret.

"These records show that Ellison Property Group received payments from an account that should have been held separately.""

Margaret nodded.

"That's what your wife discovered.""

Daniel pointed to a line.

"There's a second name.""

Dad leaned closer.

"Whose?""

Daniel read it aloud.

"Vanessa Reed.""

Dad froze.

Margaret closed her eyes.

I didn't understand.

"What's wrong?""

Dad looked at me.

"Nothing you need to worry about, sweetheart.""

But Daniel continued examining the pages.

"There's something else. The payments began before Vanessa married you.""

Dad stood.

"How long before?""

Daniel checked the dates.

"Approximately fourteen months.""

The room became cold.

Dad stared at the document.

"She was already involved with Richard before she met me.""

Margaret nodded.

"That's what the records suggest.""

Dad walked toward the window.

He stood there for a long time.

Then he asked, "Was the marriage part of the plan from the beginning?""

Margaret didn't answer.

Daniel spoke carefully.

"We need further evidence before making that conclusion.""

Dad turned.

"What about the money?""

"Most of the transfers were stopped before the trust could be affected. However, the company received payments from rental income that may not have belonged to it.""

Dad looked at the papers.

"Then we pursue it.""

Daniel nodded.

"I'll notify the appropriate authorities and preserve everything.""

Just then, his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

Then his expression changed.

"Marcus, it's the bank.""

He answered.

"Daniel speaking.""

A few seconds passed.

Then he looked at Dad.

"Yes. I understand.""

He listened again.

"Are you certain?""

Another pause.

"Send the documentation immediately.""

He ended the call.

Dad stepped forward.

"What happened?""

Daniel looked at Margaret.

Then at me.

"The bank has located another attempted transfer.""

Dad's face tightened.

"From where?""

Daniel answered slowly.

"An account connected to Vanessa.""

Dad gripped the back of his chair.

"How much?""

Daniel looked at the paper on his laptop.

"Almost four hundred thousand dollars.""

I covered my mouth.

Dad shook his head.

"Did it go through?""

"No. The transaction was blocked.""

He looked at the screen again.

"But there's something else.""

"What?""

"The request was submitted yesterday.""

Dad stared at him.

"Vanessa left this house yesterday.""

Daniel nodded.

"Which means someone may have submitted it on her behalf.""

Margaret stood.

"Richard.""

Daniel looked at the transaction details.

Then he shook his head.

"No.""

He turned the laptop toward Dad.

The account holder's name appeared on the screen.

Dad read it.

His expression changed completely.

It wasn't Vanessa.

It wasn't Richard.

It was someone Dad had trusted for years.

His older brother.

Thomas Carter.

Dad whispered, "No.""

Margaret stepped closer.

"Marcus?""

Dad stared at the screen.

"My brother knew about the trust.""

Daniel nodded.

"And according to the bank's records, he was the person who submitted the request.""

I looked at my father.

"Is Uncle Thomas bad?""

Dad closed the laptop.

He crouched beside me.

"I don't know, sweetheart.""

Then he looked at Daniel.

"But I'm going to find out.""

May you like

And for the first time, I understood that the secret in my mother's letter had never been only about Vanessa.

It was about everyone who thought my future was something they could take.
