Chapter 6: The Promise My Mother Left Behind

Dad didn't sleep that night.

Neither did I.

I lay in bed staring at the ceiling, listening to the muffled sounds of voices downstairs.

Vanessa had stopped crying.

That worried me more than when she was angry.

Angry Vanessa shouted. Angry Vanessa slammed doors. Angry Vanessa made sure everyone knew when she was unhappy.

But quiet Vanessa was different.

Quiet Vanessa planned things.

Around midnight, I heard the front door open.

Then close.

I climbed out of bed and looked through my bedroom window.

Vanessa was sitting in her car.

The interior light illuminated her face as she held her phone against her ear.

She looked frightened.

I couldn't hear what she was saying, but I saw her repeatedly looking toward our house.

Then she started crying.

A few minutes later, her car pulled away.

I didn't know where she was going.

I only knew that Dad hadn't gone to bed.

When I finally came downstairs the next morning, he was sitting at the kitchen table with Daniel, his attorney.

Two thick folders lay between them.

Dad looked up immediately.

"Good morning, princess.""

I rubbed my eyes.

"Why is Daniel here?""

Daniel smiled gently.

"Your father and I have some important things to discuss.""

Dad pulled out a chair.

"Come sit with me.""

I climbed onto it.

He poured me some orange juice.

Then he placed a familiar photograph on the table.

It showed Mom standing in front of a small brick building, holding a folder against her chest.

I recognized the building.

It was the old law office near downtown.

"That's Mommy.""

Dad nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why are we looking at that picture?""

Daniel opened his folder.

"Because your mother made some arrangements before she passed away.""

Dad picked up the photograph.

"Your mother knew that if something happened to her, I would do everything I could to protect you. But she also wanted to make sure you were protected legally.""

I looked at Daniel.

"What does that mean?""

He leaned forward.

"It means your mother planned for your future, Maya. She wanted to make sure nobody could take away the things she left for you.""

Dad rubbed his forehead.

"Tell her about the trust.""

Daniel nodded.

"Your mother established a protected inheritance for you. It includes investments, savings, and ownership interests in a property she inherited from her parents.""

I blinked.

"Like a house?""

"Among other things," Daniel answered.

"Do I own it?""

"Eventually, you will have full control. For now, your father is responsible for protecting it.""

Dad looked at me.

"Your mother wanted you to have choices when you grew up. She didn't want you to depend on anyone who might use money to control you.""

I thought about Vanessa.

"That's why she wanted the money?""

Daniel exchanged a glance with Dad.

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

Dad unfolded the document Vanessa had brought home.

"I need to know where this came from.""

Daniel studied the first page.

His eyebrows slowly rose.

"This is a copy of the original supplemental agreement.""

"Is it real?""

"The document appears authentic.""

Dad's jaw tightened.

"Then explain it.""

Daniel turned the paper around.

"Your first wife added a provision shortly before her death. It concerned the property and the inheritance structure.""

I leaned closer.

"What provision?""

Daniel paused.

"Your mother named a second independent trustee. Someone who would become involved if there were concerns about the management of your inheritance.""

Dad frowned.

"Who?""

Daniel looked at the signature.

Then he answered.

"Margaret Ellis.""

Dad sat back.

I recognized the name.

Margaret was my mother's older sister.

My aunt.

I had met her only a handful of times when I was little.

She lived in Kentucky and had visited after Mom died, but Vanessa always said she was too busy to come around.

"Why is Aunt Margaret involved?"" I asked.

Dad looked at me.

"Because your mother trusted her.""

Daniel continued reading.

"There's another condition.""

Dad leaned forward.

"What condition?""

Daniel tapped the final paragraph.

"If Maya's guardian enters a marriage and the new spouse attempts to gain access to the trust or influence its distribution, the independent trustee must be notified.""

The kitchen went silent.

Dad slowly looked toward the staircase.

"Your mother anticipated this.""

I didn't understand.

"Mom knew Vanessa?""

Dad shook his head.

"No, sweetheart. Not Vanessa specifically.""

Daniel closed the folder.

"She knew that marriage could change circumstances. She wanted to make sure your inheritance remained separate.""

Dad stared at the document.

Then he asked, "Why didn't I know about this clause?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Because the supplemental agreement was filed separately. The original attorney was supposed to notify you if the clause was activated.""

"Was he?""

Daniel looked down.

"Apparently not.""

Dad stood.

"I want the entire file.""

"I'll request it.""

"And I want Margaret contacted today.""

Daniel nodded.

"I'll handle it.""

Just then, the front door opened.

Vanessa walked in.

She wore sunglasses despite the cloudy weather.

She stopped when she saw Daniel.

"What is he doing here?""

Dad didn't answer.

She placed her handbag on the counter.

"I thought we agreed to discuss this privately.""

"We did.""

"Then why is your attorney sitting at my kitchen table?""

Daniel quietly closed his folder.

Dad stood.

"He's here because this situation has become a legal matter.""

Vanessa removed her sunglasses.

Her eyes were swollen.

"Marcus, please. We can fix this.""

Dad didn't move.

"Can we?""

She looked at me.

"Could Maya go upstairs?""

"No.""

Vanessa sighed.

"Must she hear everything?""

Dad's voice became firm.

"She's the reason we're having this conversation.""

Vanessa looked at the document.

"Did he tell you about the agreement?""

Dad nodded.

"Yes.""

She swallowed.

"Then you know I didn't make it up.""

"You knew about the provision before you submitted the bank request.""

She looked away.

"I was trying to understand our financial future.""

"You were trying to change my daughter's inheritance.""

"Because you never intended to include me in anything!""

Dad stared at her.

"Your name is on our household accounts. You have access to our shared property. You have a home here.""

"That's not enough!""

Her voice cracked.

"I gave up my life to marry you.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"You gave up nothing that entitled you to my daughter's inheritance.""

Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

"You're enjoying this, aren't you?""

Daniel stood.

"My job is to protect my client's interests and ensure the legal arrangements are followed.""

She laughed bitterly.

"Of course.""

Then she looked at Dad.

"You think Margaret is going to help you? She hates me.""

Dad frowned.

"Why would she hate you?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Instead, she picked up her handbag.

"I need some air.""

She walked toward the front door.

But before leaving, she turned around.

"Marcus, there's something you still don't know about your first wife.""

Dad went completely still.

"What?""

Vanessa looked directly at him.

"Margaret didn't just know about the inheritance.""

She paused.

"She knew why your wife was so desperate to protect Maya.""

Then she walked out.

Dad remained motionless.

Daniel slowly gathered his papers.

I looked at my father.

"Daddy?""

He turned toward me.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Was Mommy scared?""

Dad didn't answer.

May you like

He came around the table and pulled me into his arms.

And for the first time, I felt him trembling.
