Chapter 5: The Necklace That Exposed Everything

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

The necklace lay inside the velvet box.

A delicate gold chain.

A small diamond pendant.

My mother had worn it almost every day during the final year of her life.

I'd searched everywhere for it after her funeral.

I'd even asked Dad whether he'd put it somewhere safe.

He'd told me he couldn't remember.

Now Vanessa was holding it like a weapon.

"I didn't take that," I said.

Vanessa gave a theatrical sigh.

"Of course you didn't.""

Dad stepped forward.

"Where exactly did you find it?""

"In Emily's room.""

"Which room?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"The bedroom she used to have.""

Robert looked up.

"When?""

"This morning.""

Dad stared at her.

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I wanted to handle it privately.""

Robert closed his notebook.

"Mrs. Harper, I strongly advise you not to make accusations without establishing the facts.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Are you seriously defending her?""

"I'm advising you to be precise.""

Dad took the jewelry box from Vanessa.

"Emily, have you seen this necklace recently?""

I shook my head.

"No. Not since Mom died.""

He opened the box.

There was a small engraving on the back of the pendant.

Forever your little girl.

Dad's eyes filled with tears.

He looked at Vanessa.

"Why would you put this in Emily's room?""

Vanessa's expression tightened.

"I didn't.""

"Then how did it get there?""

"I don't know.""

Robert stood.

"Perhaps we should review the house security footage.""

Vanessa went completely still.

Dad frowned.

"What footage?""

"The exterior cameras. And the hallway camera near the stairs.""

Vanessa glanced toward the ceiling.

I'd forgotten about those cameras.

Dad had installed them after someone broke into the garage two years earlier.

Vanessa had complained about them.

She'd even asked him to remove them.

He never had.

Robert turned to Dad.

"Can you access the recordings?""

Dad nodded.

He opened his laptop and logged into the security system.

The screen showed several camera feeds.

The hallway.

The kitchen.

The front entrance.

The garage.

He selected the recording from that morning.

At first, nothing happened.

Then Vanessa appeared.

She walked into the hallway carrying the velvet jewelry box.

She looked around.

Then she opened my bedroom door.

She disappeared inside.

Thirty seconds later, she came out empty-handed.

Dad paused the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

"That's not what it looks like.""

Robert folded his arms.

"What does it look like, Mrs. Harper?""

She turned toward Dad.

"Michael, I was putting things away.""

"Why?""

"Because Brittany's room was being painted.""

Dad replayed the footage.

Vanessa entered my room with the necklace.

She left without it.

Then, twenty minutes later, she returned.

This time she was carrying a small handbag.

She went inside again.

And came out with the necklace box in her hand.

Dad stopped the recording.

"You're lying.""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"You've always believed your daughter over me.""

Dad looked at her.

"Because she's telling the truth.""

Brittany appeared in the doorway.

"Mom, what's happening?""

Vanessa quickly closed the jewelry box.

"Nothing, sweetheart.""

Brittany looked at the laptop.

Then she saw the necklace.

Her expression changed.

"Mom?""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Go upstairs.""

Brittany didn't move.

"Is that Grandma Laura's necklace?""

I looked at her.

"How do you know about it?""

Brittany swallowed.

"Because Mom showed it to me last week.""

Everyone turned toward Vanessa.

She stared at her daughter.

"Brittany, don't.""

Brittany's eyes filled with tears.

"You told me it was yours.""

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

"That's enough.""

Brittany pulled away.

"You said Dad bought it for you!""

Dad looked stunned.

"Why would you tell her that?""

Vanessa's expression turned desperate.

"Michael, please. This is getting ridiculous.""

But Brittany was crying now.

"You said we were going to sell it.""

The room went silent.

Dad looked at her.

"Sell it?""

Brittany nodded.

"Mom said we needed money. She said the necklace was worth a lot.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You're confused.""

"No, I'm not!""

Brittany wiped her face.

"You told me to find a jewelry buyer. You said nobody would know because Grandma was dead.""

I felt my knees weaken.

Dad caught my arm.

"Robert," he said quietly, "I think we've heard enough.""

Robert nodded.

"I agree.""

Vanessa looked around the room.

For the first time, she had no explanation.

Then she did something unexpected.

She started crying.

Not quietly.

Not gently.

She dropped into the nearest chair and covered her face.

"After everything I've done for this family...""

Dad stared at her.

"What have you done for this family, Vanessa?""

"I gave up so much!""

"You took my daughter's bedroom.""

"I tried to make this house feel like ours!""

"It was already her home.""

Vanessa pointed at me.

"She never accepted me!""

I looked at her.

"Because you never wanted to be my mother. You wanted Mom's room, Mom's things, and Mom's money.""

Her face twisted.

"You ungrateful little—"

Dad interrupted.

"Stop.""

His voice was so firm that she fell silent.

He picked up the velvet box and handed it to Robert.

"Please document everything.""

Robert nodded.

"I'll arrange for the appropriate records to be preserved.""

Vanessa stood abruptly.

"You can't do this to me.""

Dad looked at her suitcase.

"You're leaving tonight.""

She laughed bitterly.

"And where am I supposed to go?""

"That's not my responsibility anymore.""

She stared at him.

"You promised to take care of me.""

Dad's expression didn't change.

"I promised to love you. I never promised to let you hurt my daughter.""

Vanessa looked toward Brittany.

"Come on. We're leaving.""

Brittany didn't move.

"Mom, where are we going?""

"Get your things.""

"But—"

"NOW!""

Brittany flinched.

Dad stepped forward.

"Don't pressure her. She can stay here tonight if she wants.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"You'd choose Emily over your own marriage?""

Dad answered without hesitation.

"I choose my daughter.""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

She grabbed her suitcase and stormed toward the front door.

But before leaving, she turned around.

"Michael, you have no idea what Laura did.""

Dad froze.

"What are you talking about?""

Vanessa wiped her tears.

"She didn't just leave Emily money. She left something else. Something that could destroy this entire family.""

Robert immediately looked up.

"Mrs. Harper, what exactly are you referring to?""

Vanessa smiled through her tears.

"Ask Michael why he never told Emily about the final months of her mother's illness.""

I looked at Dad.

His face had gone completely pale.

"Dad?""

He didn't answer.

Vanessa opened the front door.

Then she delivered the final blow.

"Ask him why your mother wanted to change her will three weeks before she died.""

The door slammed.

I turned toward my father.

For three years, I'd believed I knew everything about the last days of my mother's life.

I remembered the hospital room.

The lavender lotion.

The quiet conversations.

The promises that everything would be okay.

But now Dad was standing in the middle of the hallway, staring at the floor as though he'd been caught hiding something enormous.

"Was she telling the truth?"" I whispered.

Dad closed his eyes.

Robert quietly gathered the documents.

Then he looked at me.

"Emily, I think it's time you heard what your mother was trying to protect you from.""

Dad finally raised his head.

And his next words changed everything.

"Your mother didn't change her will because she stopped trusting Vanessa.""

He swallowed.

"She changed it because she discovered what Vanessa had already done before we got married.""

I felt cold all over.

"What did she discover?""

Dad looked toward the staircase.

Then toward the blue cabinet in his study.

"Something that started long before Vanessa ever entered this house.""

And just as he began to explain, Robert's phone rang.

He checked the caller ID.

His expression changed.

"Michael," he said slowly, "it's the bank.""

Dad answered.

A few seconds passed.

Then his hand began to shake.

"You're telling me the account has been accessed?""

He listened.

"How much?""

Another pause.

Then he looked directly at me.

"One hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""

The exact amount Vanessa had tried to transfer.

But the bank representative hadn't finished.

"There is one more thing, Mr. Harper," the voice said through the speaker.

"The transfer wasn't attempted last week.""

Dad frowned.

"Then when?""

May you like

The representative answered.

"Three days before your wife's funeral.""
