Chapter 3: The Woman Who Wanted My Mother's House

Dad took me to a hotel that evening.

He wouldn't let me return to the garage, not even to collect my things.

He ordered room service, brought me a clean sweatshirt from a nearby store, and sat beside me while I ate.

I hadn't realized how hungry I was until the food arrived.

Dad watched me quietly.

"Emily, why didn't you tell me?""

I put down my fork.

"Vanessa said you'd be angry.""

"Angry with you?""

"She said you were tired of my complaints.""

Dad looked devastated.

"Sweetheart, I have never been tired of you.""

I wanted to believe him.

But there was something I'd been afraid to ask.

"Did you know she took my bedroom?""

"No.""

"Did you know she made me sleep outside?""

His eyes filled with tears.

"No.""

I looked down.

"Then why did you let her do all those other things?""

Dad didn't answer immediately.

He rubbed his forehead.

"After your mother died, I was barely functioning. I worked too much. I thought marrying Vanessa would give us both some stability.""

"She wasn't like this before.""

"I know.""

"No, Dad. You don't know.""

He looked at me.

I finally said everything I'd kept inside for years.

"She threw away Mom's pictures. She told me to stop talking about her. She gave Brittany my clothes.

She said I was lucky you still paid for my school. And whenever I tried telling you, she'd say I was jealous.""

Dad's hands clenched.

"Why didn't you show me?""

"Because she'd cry afterward. Then she'd tell me I'd made her feel unwelcome.""

He stared at the carpet.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he pulled me into his arms.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""

I held him tightly.

For the first time in months, I felt like I could breathe.

The next morning, Dad called his attorney.

His name was Robert Hayes, and he'd worked with my parents for almost twenty years.

When Dad explained what had happened, Robert asked him to bring the documents from the blue cabinet.

Dad looked at me.

"You found them?""

I nodded.

"I took a photograph.""

He stared at me in surprise.

"Good thinking.""

He sent the photograph to Robert.

Ten minutes later, the attorney called back.

"Michael, we need to meet immediately.""

Dad put the phone on speaker.

"What did you find?""

Robert's voice was serious.

"Your wife's trust agreement. And there's a problem.""

"What problem?""

"Vanessa appears to have attempted to transfer ownership interests without authorization.""

Dad went silent.

"What?""

"I'll explain when you get here. Bring Emily if possible.""

I looked at Dad.

He nodded.

An hour later, we were sitting inside Robert's office.

The room was lined with shelves of legal books. A large window overlooked a busy street.

Robert greeted me first.

"Emily, I'm glad you're safe.""

"Thank you.""

He placed several documents on the desk.

"Your mother was a very careful woman. Before she died, she made arrangements to protect your future.""

Dad leaned forward.

"What arrangements?""

Robert opened a folder.

"Your mother transferred the house into a family trust. You are the primary beneficiary.""

I blinked.

"What does that mean?""

"It means the house was legally protected for your benefit. Your father was appointed trustee during your childhood, with certain residential rights. The property cannot simply be transferred or used for someone else's benefit.""

Dad looked confused.

"I knew Laura had prepared something, but I thought it was just an inheritance arrangement.""

Robert shook his head.

"No. She was very specific.""

He turned a page.

"Emily is entitled to remain in the home until adulthood, and certain decisions regarding the property require her interests to be protected.""

I looked at the attorney.

"So Vanessa can't just give my room to Brittany?""

Robert gave a small, sad smile.

"She cannot use the house as though it belongs to her personally.""

Dad leaned back.

"Does Vanessa know this?""

Robert hesitated.

"That's what concerns me.""

He opened another folder.

"Three months ago, someone requested a preliminary valuation of the property.""

Dad frowned.

"Who?""

Robert placed a printed email on the desk.

The request had come from a real estate agent.

The name listed as the interested party was Vanessa Harper.

Dad stared at it.

"She was planning to sell the house?""

"Not exactly. She was investigating whether she could secure financing against the property.""

"Without my permission?""

"Without the proper authorization, yes.""

I felt sick.

Robert continued.

"There's something else. The trust agreement includes a provision concerning anyone who attempts to improperly dispose of the property or interfere with Emily's protected residential rights.""

Dad looked at him.

"What provision?""

Robert turned to the final page.

"Removal of the offending trustee or beneficiary, depending on the circumstances, and immediate review of any related financial transactions.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"Can we prove what she did?""

Robert nodded.

"We'll need more evidence.""

I remembered the envelope.

"There's another letter.""

Both men turned toward me.

I pulled out my digital camera and showed them the photograph I'd taken of the documents.

Then I told Robert about Mom's note.

He read it carefully.

"Your mother anticipated that someone might try to disregard these arrangements.""

Dad looked at me.

"Why didn't you tell me about the blue cabinet sooner?""

"I only found the letter yesterday.""

He reached across the desk and squeezed my hand.

"You're right. I'm sorry.""

Robert closed the folder.

"Michael, don't confront Vanessa with everything yet. We need to understand exactly what she's been doing.""

Dad nodded.

But he looked furious.

When we left the office, he received a message.

It was from Vanessa.

Michael, we need to discuss Emily's behavior. She's becoming manipulative, and I won't tolerate her disrespect anymore.

A second message arrived.

Also, Brittany has already started planning her room. Please don't confuse her by changing your mind.

Dad read both messages.

Then he showed me.

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because Vanessa still believed she was in control.

Dad typed a response.

We'll discuss everything tonight.

When we returned to the house, Vanessa was waiting in the kitchen.

She wore a cream-colored sweater and a carefully arranged smile.

"Michael! Finally. We need to talk.""

Dad placed his keys on the counter.

"Yes. We do.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Emily, go upstairs.""

"No," Dad said.

Vanessa blinked.

"What?""

"Emily stays.""

Vanessa's smile tightened.

"Michael, adult conversations—"

"She's sixteen. She's the person this concerns.""

Brittany appeared at the top of the stairs.

"Mom, are they changing my room back?""

Vanessa ignored her.

"Michael, I think you're letting Emily manipulate you.""

Dad stared at her.

"Did you attempt to use this house as collateral for a loan?""

Vanessa's face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

"What?""

"Answer me.""

She laughed nervously.

"Where is this coming from?""

Dad placed the printed email on the counter.

Vanessa looked at it.

Then she looked at him.

"That was just an inquiry.""

"Without my knowledge?""

"I was trying to help this family.""

"By borrowing money against a house that isn't yours?""

Her lips parted.

Brittany slowly descended the stairs.

"Mom?""

Vanessa ignored her.

Then she turned toward Dad.

"You can't seriously be taking her side over mine.""

Dad's voice was quiet.

"This isn't about taking sides.""

He pointed toward the garage.

"My daughter slept on concrete while you ate breakfast upstairs.""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"She was being disciplined.""

"She's not your prisoner.""

"She's my responsibility!""

"No," Dad said.

"She's my daughter.""

Vanessa took a step toward him.

Then she whispered something I wasn't supposed to hear.

"You're forgetting what I know about Laura.""

Dad went completely still.

"What did you say?""

Vanessa smiled.

And suddenly, I understood.

May you like

There was another secret.

One that had nothing to do with the house.
