Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew Vanessa's Plan

Dad called Laura Pierce immediately.

She didn't answer.

He sent a message asking when she could speak, then forwarded her contact information to Richard.

For the next hour, he checked his phone every few minutes while pretending to watch a baseball game with Devin.

Finally, at 8:17 p.m., Laura called.

Dad stepped onto the balcony.

"Ms. Pierce?""

"Mr. Bennett, thank you for calling me back.""

Her voice sounded careful, almost rehearsed.

"You said you had information about documents Vanessa prepared.""

"Yes. Before I explain, I need to be clear that I cannot disclose privileged information improperly. I'm contacting you because I believe there may be a misunderstanding about what was submitted and what remains a draft. Your attorney can request the appropriate records.""

Dad gripped the balcony railing.

"All right.""

"Vanessa approached our office several weeks ago asking about financial arrangements in the event of a separation. She wanted to understand how the house, savings, and children's living arrangements might be handled.""

"Was she planning to divorce me?""

"I can't tell you what she intended. She asked questions about several possible outcomes.""

Dad looked toward the hotel room, where Devin was laughing at something on television.

"Did she mention Maya?""

There was a pause.

"Yes.""

"What did she say?""

"She was concerned that your relationship with Maya might complicate any separation. She wanted to know whether Maya could be asked to live elsewhere.""

Dad closed his eyes.

Laura continued.

"At that point, I explained that Maya's age and circumstances would matter, and that no one could simply decide her living arrangements without considering the relevant legal requirements.""

"Then why did she write that note about the vacation?""

"I don't know who wrote the note you found or why. I haven't authenticated it. But I can tell you that Vanessa discussed the possibility of documenting household conflicts.""

Dad's voice became colder.

"What kind of conflicts?""

"Arguments involving Maya and Devin. She asked how those incidents might be described in a separation proposal.""

Dad was silent.

Then he asked, "Did you tell her to create conflict?""

"Absolutely not.""

"Did you tell her to exclude my daughter from a family vacation?""

"No.""

"Did you tell her that making Maya look disruptive would help her?""

Laura took a breath.

"Mr. Bennett, I advised Vanessa that any proposed arrangement needed to reflect the actual circumstances and the children's interests. I did not advise her to manufacture evidence.""

Dad thanked her and ended the call.

He remained outside for several minutes.

When he came back inside, I was sitting on the bed, hugging a pillow.

"Was she involved in Vanessa's plan?"" I asked.

"She says Vanessa asked about a possible separation and how living arrangements might work.""

"Did she say Vanessa wanted me gone?""

"She said Vanessa asked whether you could live elsewhere.""

I looked down at my hands.

"That's the same thing.""

"Not exactly," Dad said gently.

"But I understand why it feels that way.""

He sat beside me.

"Richard will review everything before I make any decisions.""

I nodded.

Then I asked the question that had been sitting inside me since I read the note.

"Dad, if Vanessa had succeeded in making me look like a problem, would you have believed her?""

He didn't answer immediately.

I watched him struggle with the question.

Finally, he said, "I hope I would have asked for the truth.""

"That's not the same as saying no.""

He lowered his eyes.

"No. It isn't.""

I appreciated his honesty, but it hurt.

The next morning, Dad arranged a video meeting with Richard. Aunt Denise joined from home, holding a folder of bank statements and property documents.

Richard appeared on the screen in his office.

"Andre, I've reviewed what you sent. We need to separate three issues: the reservation, the financial transfers, and the proposed property arrangements.""

Dad nodded.

"Let's start with the money.""

Richard explained that several transfers had gone to an account whose ownership had not yet been verified. The records available so far did not establish whether the money had been used for personal expenses, household costs, or something else.

"We should request the bank's official documentation before making accusations," he said.

"What about the house?"" Dad asked.

"The documents appear to be drafts. I haven't found evidence of a completed ownership transfer. However, I recommend checking the county records and obtaining copies of every filing associated with the property.""

"And the letter about Maya?""

Richard folded his hands.

"That may be relevant to understanding Vanessa's intentions, but we need context and authentication. A handwritten note alone doesn't establish the whole story.""

I sat quietly beside Dad.

For once, nobody was telling me to stop making things difficult.

They were taking my concerns seriously.

Then Aunt Denise spoke.

"There's something else.""

Dad turned toward her on the screen.

"What?""

"When Vanessa called me yesterday, she said Maya had been planning to leave the family anyway.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

Denise nodded.

"She said you had been talking about moving out after graduation and that the vacation was just an argument waiting to happen.""

Dad looked at me.

"Have you ever told Vanessa you wanted to leave?""

I shook my head.

"I've said I wanted to go to college. That's all.""

"Did you ever tell her you hated living there?""

I thought about it.

"Not in those words.""

"Not in any words?""

I swallowed.

"Once, after she forgot my birthday, I told her I wished things could be different.""

Denise's expression softened.

"That isn't the same as wanting to abandon your family.""

Richard nodded.

"Which is why context matters. A frustrated teenager expressing hurt should not automatically be portrayed as a plan to leave home.""

Dad stared at the screen.

"She took Maya's unhappiness, which she helped create, and wanted to use it as evidence that Maya didn't belong.""

"That is one possible interpretation," Richard said carefully.

"But we need to establish what the documents actually show.""

After the meeting, Dad sat beside me in silence.

Then he asked, "Do you want to tell me what happened on your birthday?""

I looked at him.

"You remember that?""

"I remember you were upset. I didn't understand why.""

I stared at the hotel carpet.

"I waited all day for you to come home. Vanessa said we'd have cake after dinner. But when you got back, Devin had a school project, and she said we could celebrate the next day.""

Dad's face tightened.

"And the next day?""

"She said she'd forgotten to buy a cake. She gave me twenty dollars and told me not to be childish.""

He lowered his head.

"I didn't know.""

"I know.""

"Did you want to tell me?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you?""

I gave a small, sad laugh.

"Because every time I complained, she said I was jealous of Devin. Eventually, I started wondering if she was right.""

Dad took my hand.

"You're allowed to want to be treated fairly without being jealous of your brother.""

I nodded, blinking back tears.

For years, I had needed someone to say those words.

That afternoon, Devin came into the room carrying his dinosaur.

"Can I ask something?""

Dad patted the space beside him.

"Of course.""

Devin climbed onto the bed.

"Are we going home when the vacation ends?""

Dad took a breath.

"We'll go somewhere safe while we figure things out.""

"Is Mom going to live with us?""

Dad looked at me before answering.

"I don't know yet, buddy.""

Devin's eyes filled.

"Did she do something bad?""

Dad didn't rush to answer.

"She made some choices that hurt people. We're trying to understand them.""

Devin looked down at his dinosaur.

"Can people still love you if they do bad things?""

Dad's expression softened.

"Yes. But loving someone doesn't mean pretending their choices don't matter.""

Devin considered that.

"Can I still love Mom?""

"Always.""

"Can I still love Maya?""

Dad pulled him into a hug.

"Absolutely.""

Devin leaned against him.

"I want us all to be nice to each other.""

Dad kissed the top of his head.

"So do I, buddy.""

That evening, Vanessa sent a message to our family group chat.

*I am sorry everyone has been upset. I never wanted to hurt anyone. I hope we can put this behind us and remember that family should stay together.*

For a moment, I almost wanted to believe her.

Then another message appeared.

*Maya, please tell your father that you understand why I made the decision about Florida. You know how difficult things have been for everyone.*

I stared at the screen.

Even now, she wanted me to take responsibility for her choice.

I typed carefully.

*I understand that you made the decision. I don't agree with it, and I'm not going to pretend it didn't hurt me.*

I sent the message.

Dad read it over my shoulder.

He didn't tell me to soften it.

He didn't ask me to forgive her.

He simply said, "That's honest.""

The following morning, Richard called.

He had checked the property records and reviewed the preliminary financial documents. There was no evidence that Vanessa had completed the transfer she had discussed with the lawyer.

However, he had found something that required further investigation.

A separate financial application had been started in both Andre and Vanessa's names.

Dad frowned.

"What kind of application?""

Richard paused.

"A loan application secured against the house.""

Dad stood so quickly his chair scraped across the floor.

"I never applied for a loan.""

"I understand. The document includes your name, but I haven't verified how it was submitted or whether the lender relied on it.""

Dad's face hardened.

"Does it have my signature?""

"That is what we need to establish.""

He looked at me.

I felt my stomach drop.

Because suddenly, the question wasn't just whether Vanessa had wanted to push me out of the family.

It was whether she had been willing to risk the entire life my father had worked to build.

And Richard had one more question.

"Andre, have you ever given Vanessa permission to sign financial documents on your behalf?""

Dad stared at the screen.

"No.""

May you like

Richard nodded gravely.

"Then we need to investigate who submitted this application—and what happens if the lender believes it was authorized.""
