Chapter 7: The Letter Addressed to Noah

I drove back to my mother's house before sunrise.

The streets were quiet.

A few delivery trucks moved through the neighborhood, and the sky above Atlanta was turning pale gray.

Daniel followed in his truck.

When I entered the house, Mom was waiting in the kitchen.

She wore her blue cardigan and had a cup of tea between her hands.

Beside her sat a small wooden box.

"Did you find it?"" I asked.

She nodded.

"Your father gave me this key shortly before he died.""

She placed a brass key on the table.

I picked it up.

It was smaller than the key to the garden shed.

"Why didn't you tell me about this before?""

Mom looked at me.

"Because your father asked me to wait until Noah was old enough to understand.""

I stared at her.

"Understand what?""

She touched the envelope.

"That he was loved before anyone knew what his future would look like.""

I swallowed.

Daniel pulled out a chair.

"What's inside the box?""

Mom opened the lid.

There were three envelopes, a small flash drive, and a folded document.

One envelope had my name.

Another had my mother's name.

The third was addressed to Noah.

I picked up mine first.

The handwriting was familiar.

*Marcus,*

*I know you may be angry with me for keeping certain things from you. You have every right to be. But I need you to understand that I never doubted your ability to be a good father.*

*When Claire told me about Richard, I expected you to leave her. I would have understood. But I also knew what Richard intended to do with the truth.*

*He wanted to turn a child into a bargaining chip.*

*I couldn't allow that.*

I stopped reading.

My eyes burned.

The letter continued.

*You have always wanted to be a father. I watched you hold Noah when he was born. I watched you cry when he first called you Daddy. I watched you spend three nights sleeping in a hospital chair when he had his first serious fever.*

*Those moments belong to you. Nobody can take them away.*

I put the letter down.

Daniel looked at me.

"You okay?""

I shook my head.

"Not really.""

My mother gently squeezed my hand.

I picked up the second document.

It was a notarized declaration.

My father had arranged for an independent trust to hold the development rights connected to the property.

The beneficiary was Evelyn Reed.

But there was another name listed as a contingent beneficiary.

Noah Reed.

The document stated that the trust would remain protected until Noah reached twenty-five, unless certain conditions required earlier action.

I looked at Daniel.

"Why Noah?""

He examined the document.

"Maybe Dad wanted to make sure Noah had something of his own.""

My mother nodded.

"Your father adored that little boy.""

I looked at the final envelope.

It was addressed to Noah.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

*My dear Noah,*

*If your daddy is reading this to you, it means you're old enough to understand something important.*

*Families are not made by blood alone. They are made by people who stay.*

*I knew you before I knew what your name would be. I knew you before you could walk, before you could talk, and before you could throw a baseball across the yard.*

*Your daddy chose to love you every day. Never let anyone convince you that love is less important than biology.*

I couldn't continue.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

My father had written this for Noah.

He had known.

He had known everything.

And he had still loved my son.

I wiped my eyes.

Mom reached for the flash drive.

"There's something else.""

I inserted it into Daniel's laptop.

A folder appeared.

Inside were several documents and one audio recording.

The recording was dated three weeks before my father's death.

I clicked play.

Richard's voice filled the kitchen.

"You can't keep the property from me forever, George.""

My father's voice followed.

"It's not yours.""

"You used my money.""

"I used my money. You stole from the company.""

"You can't prove that.""

"I already have.""

There was a pause.

Then Richard laughed.

"What happens when I tell Marcus about the boy?""

My father's voice became colder.

"You leave Noah out of this.""

"He's my son.""

"He's a child.""

"He's my blood.""

"And Marcus is the man raising him.""

Richard laughed again.

"You're protecting the wrong man.""

My father answered immediately.

"No. I'm protecting the child.""

The recording continued.

Richard demanded money.

My father refused.

Then came a sentence that made my mother gasp.

"If you ever come near that boy, I'll make sure you spend the rest of your life explaining every fraudulent document you've signed.""

The recording ended.

Daniel leaned back.

"That's enough to put him in trouble.""

"Maybe," I said.

"But we need an attorney to review everything.""

I collected the documents.

Then I looked at my mother.

"Did Claire ever know about this trust?""

Mom shook her head.

"Not that I know of.""

I frowned.

"Then why was she so desperate to get the deed?""

Mom looked toward the window.

"Because Richard told her the deed was worth millions.""

I stared at her.

"How did he know?""

She hesitated.

"Your father told him about the development project years ago. Richard believed the trust documents were incomplete.""

I took a breath.

"Where did Claire meet him yesterday?""

Mom looked at me.

"She said she was going to speak with him at the warehouse.""

I checked my phone.

There were three missed calls from Claire.

And one message.

*Marcus, please don't let Richard get the deed. He has something else.*

I typed back.

*What?*

The reply came immediately.

*Proof that I wasn't the only person involved.*

I stared at the screen.

Daniel read the message.

"She's trying to shift blame.""

"Maybe.""

"Don't believe her.""

I put the phone away.

But I couldn't ignore the possibility that there was more to this.

At 9:15 a.m., I received another call.

This time it was Melissa Grant, the attorney.

"Mr. Reed, I've reviewed the documents you sent.""

"What do you think?""

"Your father appears to have created a legitimate trust structure. However, I found something concerning in the property records.""

"What?""

"An attempted lien was filed against the commercial parcel six months ago.""

I frowned.

"By whom?""

"An entity called Cole Development Partners.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Richard.""

"Probably. But there's another problem.""

"What?""

"The filing includes a personal guarantee bearing your signature.""

My blood went cold.

"I never signed anything.""

"That's what I thought. I compared the signature with the business records you provided. It appears inconsistent.""

I sat down.

"Someone forged my signature?""

"It appears that way.""

Daniel muttered a curse.

Melissa continued.

"Mr. Reed, I need you to understand the seriousness of this. If the lien had been accepted, your company could have faced substantial financial exposure.""

"Can you stop it?""

"We've already filed an objection. I also recommend preserving every communication involving your wife and Richard Cole.""

I thanked her and ended the call.

Daniel stared at me.

"Claire had access to your business documents.""

I nodded.

She knew my passwords.

She knew where I kept company files.

She knew which accounts were used for property purchases.

I had trusted her with everything.

And she had used that trust to create financial documents in my name.

My phone rang again.

Claire.

I answered.

"Where are you?""

"At the house.""

"Is Noah there?""

"He's at school.""

"Good. Don't take him anywhere.""

She began crying.

"Marcus, I need to see you.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard is planning something.""

I looked at Daniel.

"What?""

She lowered her voice.

"He wants to take Noah.""

I stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.

"What did you just say?""

"He says he has parental rights. He says he can prove he's the biological father.""

I clenched my jaw.

"He has no custody order.""

"He's been talking to a lawyer.""

"Then we'll talk to our lawyer.""

"Marcus, you don't understand. He has the original paternity report.""

I froze.

The report was supposed to be in the bank's safe deposit box.

"How does he have it?""

Claire began sobbing.

"Because I gave him a copy.""

I closed my eyes.

"Of course you did.""

"Marcus, I thought he would leave us alone.""

"You thought wrong.""

Then she whispered something.

"He also has a recording of our conversation with your father.""

I stared at the wall.

"What conversation?""

"The one where your father told me to marry you.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

Claire's voice broke.

"Marcus, he didn't just know about Noah. He knew I was planning to leave you after I got access to the property.""

I felt sick.

"Then why didn't he stop the wedding?""

"Because he wanted to use the marriage to protect Noah from Richard.""

I couldn't speak.

My father had known Claire was using me.

He had known she intended to leave.

And he had still allowed the marriage to happen because he believed he could protect the child.

I looked at Daniel.

He was shaking his head.

May you like

Then Claire said the words that changed the direction of everything.

"Marcus, Richard is coming to your son's school today.""
