Chapter 6: The Truth My Father Took to His Grave

For several minutes, I couldn't hear anything except the sound of my own breathing.

Richard Cole was Noah's biological father.

The man who had stolen from my father.

The man who had been working with my wife before she ever met me.

The man whose name appeared in emails discussing how to gain access to my family's property.

And somehow, that man was connected to the little boy I'd spent seven years raising.

Daniel stood beside the desk, staring at me.

"Marcus, what did she say?""

I lowered the phone.

"Richard is Noah's biological father.""

Daniel went completely still.

Then he whispered, "No.""

I placed the phone on the desk.

"I don't know what to believe anymore.""

Daniel pulled out a chair.

"Listen to me. Whatever happened between Claire and Richard, Noah is still your son.""

I looked at him.

"Is he?""

"He's the little boy who calls you Daddy. You're the one who taught him to ride a bicycle. You're the one who sat beside his hospital bed when he had pneumonia.""

My throat tightened.

Daniel continued.

"Biology doesn't erase seven years.""

I wanted to believe him.

I really did.

But my mind kept returning to Claire's message.

Richard is Noah's biological father.

I picked up the phone.

"Call her back.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Maybe we should let an attorney handle this.""

"No. I need to hear it from her.""

I dialed.

She answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"Where are you?""

"At home.""

"Is Richard there?""

"No.""

"Don't lie to me again.""

She started crying.

"He's gone.""

"Then tell me everything.""

A long silence followed.

Finally, Claire whispered, "Richard and I were together before I met you.""

"I know.""

"We had a relationship that lasted almost two years.""

"I know that too.""

"He wasn't the man I thought he was.""

I laughed bitterly.

"That's convenient.""

"Marcus, please.""

"Did you know you were pregnant when you married me?""

Her breathing changed.

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"How far along?""

"Almost two months.""

I gripped the desk.

"And you let me believe Noah was mine.""

"Richard disappeared when I told him.""

"Why?""

"He said he couldn't have a child. He said he had business problems and couldn't afford to be involved.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the floor.

Claire continued.

"When I met you, I was terrified. I didn't know what to do. You were kind to me.

You wanted a family. You said you wanted children.""

"So you let me raise another man's child.""

"I fell in love with you.""

"When were you planning to tell me?""

She began sobbing.

"I don't know.""

"Seven years passed, Claire.""

"I know.""

"Seven birthdays. Seven Christmas mornings. Seven years of me believing I was Noah's biological father.""

"You're his father.""

I slammed my palm against the desk.

"Stop saying that as if it fixes what you did!""

She went quiet.

Then I heard her whisper.

"Your father knew.""

I froze.

"What?""

"Your father found out before Noah was born.""

I slowly sat down.

"How?""

"Richard told him.""

I stared at the screen.

"Why would Richard tell my father?""

"Because Richard wanted money.""

I felt sick.

Claire explained that Richard had contacted my father shortly after she became pregnant.

He had demanded payment in exchange for staying away.

My father refused.

Instead, he arranged a private meeting and obtained a written statement from Richard admitting that he had been involved with Claire before my marriage.

"Your father confronted me," Claire said.

"What did you tell him?""

"I admitted everything.""

"And he let you marry me anyway?""

"He told me he would give me one chance to tell you the truth myself.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you?""

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because I loved you. Because I was afraid you'd leave. Because I thought Richard would disappear forever.""

I laughed without humor.

"You thought you could build a marriage on a lie and nobody would ever discover it?""

"I was young.""

"You were twenty-seven, Claire. Not twelve.""

She started crying harder.

Then she said something that made me pause.

"Your father made me promise something.""

"What?""

"That if Richard ever came back, I would tell you everything and leave Noah out of it.""

I stared at the photograph of my father on the desk.

"What happened to that promise?""

"Richard came back six months ago. He said he had documents proving your father had concealed part of the property ownership. He threatened to expose everything.""

"And you helped him?""

"I was scared.""

"So you started stealing my mother's belongings?""

"I didn't steal them!""

"Then what do you call locking her possessions in a shed?""

She couldn't answer.

I ended the call.

For several minutes, Daniel and I sat in silence.

Then he pointed at the USB drive.

"There's something else on here.""

I looked at the screen.

The video files had been arranged in chronological order.

We had watched only the first one.

The second file was titled:

*MARCUS — BIRTHDAY MESSAGE.*

I clicked it.

My father's face appeared again.

This time, he was sitting in his study.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Marcus, if you've reached this recording, then Richard has returned, and Claire has probably told you about Noah.""

My stomach tightened.

My father continued.

"I know this is painful. I wish I'd found a better way to protect you. But I made a decision seven years ago, and I need you to understand why.""

He paused.

"When Richard told me about the child, I was angry. Not because of Noah. Never because of Noah. I was angry because he intended to use an innocent child as leverage.""

My eyes filled.

My father looked down at something.

"I asked Richard to take a paternity test. He refused. Then I asked Claire to take one. She agreed.""

I leaned forward.

The video continued.

"The results confirmed that Richard was Noah's biological father.""

I covered my mouth.

Daniel whispered, "He knew.""

My father nodded slowly in the recording.

"I told Claire she had to tell you. She begged me to give her time. I made a mistake by agreeing.""

He looked straight into the camera.

"But there was a reason I wanted to wait.""

My father's expression changed.

"Richard wasn't simply trying to collect money. He had discovered that the property rights I had protected were worth millions. He believed that if he could establish a connection to Noah, he could eventually challenge the estate arrangements.""

I frowned.

"Why would Noah's paternity give him a claim?""

My father continued as if he could hear me.

"It wouldn't give him ownership automatically. But Richard believed he could create a legal dispute, frighten Evelyn, and force a settlement.""

He took a breath.

"I was gathering evidence against him when my health began to decline. I knew I might not have enough time to finish.""

Then he leaned closer.

"Marcus, there is a sealed legal packet in the safe deposit box at First Southern Bank. It contains the original paternity report, Richard's written admission, and a document explaining the property arrangement.""

He paused.

"Most importantly, it contains something Richard doesn't know exists.""

The screen went black.

Daniel stared at me.

"What do you think it is?""

I shook my head.

"I don't know.""

Then my phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Mr. Reed?""

A man's voice came through.

"This is Richard Cole.""

My entire body stiffened.

"What do you want?""

"To prevent you from making a mistake.""

"You've made enough mistakes for both of us.""

He chuckled softly.

"Your father said the same thing.""

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"Stay away from my family.""

"Which family, Marcus?""

I said nothing.

Richard continued.

"The woman who married you? The boy you raised? The house your father hid? You're beginning to understand that none of this is as simple as you thought.""

"Where are you?""

"That doesn't matter.""

"It matters to me.""

He lowered his voice.

"Your father left something for Noah. You found the recording, didn't you?""

I looked at Daniel.

Richard knew about the video.

"How do you know that?""

"Because I helped your father arrange the meeting with the bank.""

My stomach dropped.

"What?""

"Come to the old warehouse tomorrow morning. Bring the original deed.""

"Why?""

"Because I can show you something your father never had the courage to tell you.""

I laughed.

"Why would I trust you?""

"You shouldn't.""

He paused.

"But if you want to know why your father protected Noah even after learning the truth, bring the deed.""

The call ended.

Daniel stared at me.

"You're not going.""

I looked at the original property documents.

Then at my father's handwriting.

Richard wanted the deed.

He wanted the property.

He wanted control over something my father had spent years protecting.

But there was one thing he didn't understand.

I wasn't the frightened young man who had married Claire eight years ago.

And I wasn't going to let him use my son.

I placed the deed inside my briefcase.

"Tomorrow morning," I said, "we find out what Richard is hiding.""

But before I could leave the study, another message arrived.

It was from my mother.

*Marcus, I found the second key to your father's safe. There's a letter attached. It has Noah's name on it.*

And beneath it was a photograph.

A small envelope.

May you like

With seven words written across the front.

*To the boy who made us a family.*
