Chapter 9: The Last Lie
I thought I had learned every painful truth.
I was wrong.
Rachel sat across from me that night.
Leo was asleep upstairs.
For once, the house was quiet.
“Tell me.””
She looked exhausted.
“I was pregnant.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“When I left.””
The room spun.
“You were pregnant?””
She nodded.
“I found out the day before.””
My voice shook.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because your mother already knew.””
I stared.
“She knew?””
Rachel nodded.
“She found the test.””
My hands clenched.
“What did she say?””
Rachel looked down.
“She told me if I told you, she would make sure I never got custody of Leo.””
I felt anger rising.
“You were pregnant with our child.””
“I know.””
“And she threatened you?””
“Yes.””
I stood up.
“Where is the baby?””
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“She’s gone.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
“I lost her.””
Silence.
“She was only six weeks.””
I sat down slowly.
Another loss.
Another thing stolen.
Another moment of our lives my mother had poisoned.
“I’m sorry.””
Rachel wiped her tears.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because after I lost the baby, I thought you would never forgive me for leaving.””
I shook my head.
“I would have forgiven you.””
“I didn’t know that.””
Because nobody gave her the chance.
That was the pattern.
My mother made sure conversations never happened.
She controlled the distance between people.
She controlled the pain.
The next day, I confronted Martha one final time.
She was sitting alone in her house.
The same place where she hid my letters.
The same place where she built her lies.
“You knew about the baby.””
Her face went pale.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked away.
“I was afraid.””
“That is not an answer.””
She started crying.
“I thought if Rachel stayed, I would disappear.””
“You didn’t love me.””
Her head snapped up.
“What?””
“You loved being needed.””
She looked devastated.
But she didn’t deny it.
“I spent my whole life taking care of you.””
“And I appreciate that.””
I took a breath.
“But you don’t own me.””
Her shoulders shook.
“I’m your mother.””
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“And I’m your son.””
A long silence passed.
“But I’m also Leo’s father.””
I placed the letters on the table.
“And I’m going to be the father I should have been.””
She whispered:
“Are you leaving me?””
I looked around the room.
The room full of memories.
The room full of secrets.
“I’m choosing my family.””
That night, I finally gave Leo what he wanted.
A normal bedtime.
A story.
A promise.
“Daddy?””
“Yeah?””
“Will you come tomorrow?””
I smiled.
“Yes.””
“And the day after?””
“Yes.””
He looked relieved.
“Okay.””
I kissed his forehead.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from the lawyer.
*We found the person who helped Martha forge the documents.*
I opened the attachment.
A name appeared.
A name I recognized.
May you like
Someone I never expected.
Elena’s father.
