Chapter 5: The Document I Never Signed
I stared at the photo for several minutes.
My signature.
My name.
A legal document.
But I had never seen it before.
I drove home faster than I should have.
When I entered the house, Elena was standing in the living room.
She looked terrified.
“What is this?””
I held up my phone.
She didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me.””
She took a deep breath.
“My mother found it.””
I blinked.
“Your mother?””
She nodded.
“She kept it hidden.””
I looked at her.
“You’re talking about Martha.””
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
I felt something inside me break again.
“How many secrets are there?””
Elena walked toward the table.
“I found this while looking through the old files.””
She placed a folder in front of me.
Inside were documents.
Custody papers.
Financial records.
And one page that made my hands shake.
A statement saying Rachel had voluntarily abandoned our family.
A statement claiming she gave up all rights to Leo.
A statement with my signature.
But the signature was wrong.
Not obvious.
Not to someone who didn’t know me.
But I knew my own handwriting.
“I never signed this.””
Elena nodded.
“I know.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes dropped.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
She whispered:
“Your mother.””
The room went quiet.
Then my phone rang.
It was Rachel.
I answered immediately.
“Rachel?””
Her voice sounded panicked.
“Daniel, you need to listen carefully.””
“What happened?””
“She knows.””
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your mother knows we found the documents.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
Rachel’s voice became quieter.
“Because she just called me.””
I looked toward the window.
The night outside was completely dark.
“What did she say?””
Rachel took a shaky breath.
“She said if you keep searching for the truth…”
Silence.
“Your son will be the one who pays for it.””
I felt my blood run cold.
I looked down the hallway.
Leo’s bedroom door was open.
His little shoes were sitting neatly by the bed.
The child who had been brave enough to expose the truth was now the target of the person who created the lies.
I grabbed my keys.
“Daniel?”” Rachel asked.
“I’m coming.””
“Where?””
I looked at the folder.
At the fake signature.
At the evidence of everything stolen from me.
“To my mother’s house.””
I walked toward the door.
But before I could leave, my phone received one final message.
It wasn’t from Rachel.
It wasn’t from Elena.
It was from Martha.
One sentence.
One warning.
*You want the truth about the letters? Come alone.*
And beneath it was a photograph.
May you like
A photograph of something I had never seen before.
Something that proved my mother’s lies went back much further than two years.
