Chapter 8: The Deal That Destroyed Us All
I stared at Ethan.
Waiting for him to laugh.
Waiting for him to say it was a misunderstanding.
Waiting for someone to tell me that my entire life had not been built on secrets.
But nobody did.
The silence was the answer.
“My grandfather paid my mother?””
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
Ethan nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Ethan looked at him.
“I know.””
“Your grandfather was trying to protect Lily.””
“He was.””
“Then why would he destroy her real father?””
Ethan looked down.
“Because he was protecting something bigger.””
I felt anger rise inside me.
“Bigger than me?””
“No.””
Ethan’s voice softened.
“Never bigger than you.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
He looked toward his small living room.
“Come inside.””
I didn’t want to.
A part of me wanted to leave.
I wanted to return to a world where my biggest problem was choosing baby names.
Where family meant safety.
Where my mother’s hugs didn’t feel like a lie.
But I followed him inside.
Because I needed the truth.
Even if it destroyed what was left.
The house was simple.
Books stacked on shelves.
Old photographs on the walls.
A life that looked completely different from the one I had imagined for my biological father.
Ethan poured water into three glasses.
His hands shook.
“I’ve imagined this day for thirty-two years.””
I looked at him.
“Meeting me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you find me?””
Pain crossed his face.
“Because I promised your grandfather.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He came to me after I was released.””
Daniel looked suspicious.
“Why would he do that?””
Ethan sat down.
“Because he finally admitted the truth.””
“What truth?””
“That I was innocent.””
The words were quiet.
But they carried years of pain.
“He apologized.””
I stared at him.
“My grandfather apologized?””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
Ethan looked at the floor.
“He said he had spent years protecting the wrong people.””
My chest tightened.
“What happened?””
Ethan took a deep breath.
“Your father was stealing from the company.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Ethan looked at me.
“You know part of it.””
He leaned forward.
“Your father wasn’t stealing money for himself.””
I frowned.
“What else would he be stealing for?””
Ethan’s expression darkened.
“He was funding something.””
A chill moved through me.
“Something?””
“A private operation.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“What kind of operation?””
Ethan hesitated.
“The kind that involved destroying anyone who threatened him.””
The room went quiet.
I thought about my sister.
The medication.
The attack.
The lies.
It was all connected.
But I still didn’t understand one thing.
“My grandfather.””
Ethan nodded.
“He knew.””
“About everything?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he stop it?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of my father?””
“No.””
A pause.
“He was afraid of what your father would do to you.””
Ethan walked to a cabinet and pulled out an old folder.
The edges were worn.
He placed it on the table.
“Your grandfather gave me this.””
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Financial records.
Emails.
Photos.
My father’s name appeared again and again.
But there was something else.
Another name.
A company.
A private security firm.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
“Your father’s insurance.””
Daniel frowned.
“Insurance?””
Ethan nodded.
“Your father knew people would eventually discover what he was doing.””
“So he created evidence against others?””
“Yes.””
I flipped through the pages.
“He framed you.””
“Yes.””
“He framed my mother?””
Ethan looked away.
“Your mother wasn’t only a victim.””
The words hurt.
Even after everything.
“She made choices.””
I swallowed.
“What choices?””
Ethan’s voice became quieter.
“She helped him build the lie.””
The doorbell rang.
All of us froze.
Ethan looked toward the entrance.
“I’m not expecting anyone.””
Detective Morgan immediately moved.
“Stay here.””
He walked toward the door.
A second later, he looked through the window.
His expression changed.
“Mrs. Carter.””
My blood ran cold.
My mother.
She stood outside.
Alone.
Detective Morgan opened the door but kept himself between us.
“You weren’t supposed to be here.””
“I know.””
Her eyes found mine.
“Lily.””
I didn’t answer.
She stepped inside slowly.
“I need to explain.””
Ethan stood.
“You’ve done enough explaining.””
My mother looked at him.
And the pain between them was immediate.
Not anger.
History.
“You’re alive.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“Were you hoping I wasn’t?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“No.””
“Then why did you help destroy my life?””
My mother looked down.
“I was afraid.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Everyone says that.””
The words hit hard.
Because everyone had used the same excuse.
Fear.
Pressure.
Protection.
But people still made choices.
My mother looked at me.
“I need you to know something.””
I crossed my arms.
“What?””
“I never wanted you hurt.””
I almost laughed.
“My baby almost died.””
“I know.””
“Because of you.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty was painful.
“I gave your sister the medication.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“What?””
My mother nodded.
“But I didn’t know what it was.””
I stared at her.
“Stop.””
“I’m telling the truth.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
She cried.
“I thought it was something to make you sick.””
The room went silent.
“Why?””
My mother looked at the floor.
“Because your father convinced me the baby would take everything from you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He told me the trust would destroy you.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
My mother looked at me.
“Because the trust wasn’t only about money.””
“What was it about?””
She hesitated.
Then Ethan answered.
“It was about ownership.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
Ethan pointed to the documents.
“Your grandfather didn’t just leave you the company.””
He paused.
“He left you the evidence.””
I felt cold.
“What evidence?””
“The evidence that could put powerful people in prison.””
My mother nodded slowly.
“Your grandfather discovered a network of corruption.””
Daniel looked at her.
“And Lily’s baby?””
My mother’s face changed.
“She wasn’t just the heir.””
She looked at my stomach.
“She was the trigger.””
My heart stopped.
“The trigger for what?””
My mother whispered:
“Your grandfather designed the trust so that when your daughter was born, all the hidden files would automatically be released to investigators.””
Silence.
My daughter.
A baby who hadn’t even entered the world.
Was the reason powerful people were terrified.
Detective Morgan suddenly checked his phone.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“We have a problem.””
Daniel stood.
“What happened?””
“The hospital called.””
My heart dropped.
“What about the baby?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“It’s not the baby.””
“Then what?””
He looked at Ethan.
“Someone broke into the hospital records department.””
My mother went pale.
“What records?””
Detective Morgan answered:
“The original trust documents.””
I felt cold.
“My grandfather’s letter?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Your medical records.””
I froze.
“My medical records?””
He nodded.
“Someone is trying to erase your birth history.””
I looked at Ethan.
Then my mother.
Then the documents on the table.
“What does my birth have to do with all of this?””
Nobody answered.
Because suddenly everyone looked afraid.
Even Ethan.
Finally, he whispered:
“Lily…”
I turned toward him.
“What?””
He looked at the DNA test.
“The reason your grandfather protected you…”
A pause.
“The reason he created the trust…”
Another pause.
“Wasn’t because you were his granddaughter.””
I felt my heartbeat slow.
“What are you saying?””
Ethan looked at me with sadness.
“I’m saying your grandfather knew the truth.””
“What truth?””
He took a breath.
Then said:
“Your birth certificate was changed.””
My blood went cold.
“And the original one proves something your mother, your father, and your grandfather spent thirty-two years hiding.””
“What?””
Ethan looked toward the door.
Then back at me.
“That you were never supposed to inherit the company.””
I swallowed.
“Then what was I supposed to inherit?””
His answer came quietly.
“A name.””
I stared at him.
“What name?””
Ethan’s face turned pale.
“The name of the family your grandfather was trying to protect you from.””
Before I could ask another question, Detective Morgan’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed instantly.
“Where?””
A pause.
Then he looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter…”
My heart sank.
“What?””
He lowered the phone.
“Your father escaped custody.””
The room went silent.
“How?””
Detective Morgan’s eyes moved to the documents.
“He didn’t escape.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then what?””
He looked at me.
“Someone helped him.””
I felt a chill.
“Who?””
The detective hesitated.
Then said:
“The person who accessed the hospital records was identified.””
I waited.

And when he finally spoke, the world stopped.
“It was your mother.””
