Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Folder

I watched the video three more times before I could accept what I was seeing.

Not because I didn’t believe Daniel.

Because I wanted to find another explanation.

A shadow.

A misunderstanding.

A sentence taken out of context.

Anything.

But every time the video played, the same moment appeared.

My mother standing behind the patio door.

My sister walking toward me.

My mother’s voice drifting through the open doorway.

“Make sure it’s gone.””

My chest tightened.

“What does she mean?”” I whispered.

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

He sat beside my hospital bed, staring at the frozen image on Noah’s phone.

For years, he had been the person who could calm me down when everything felt impossible.

But now even he looked lost.

“I don’t know,” he finally said.

The room felt colder.

The machines around me continued their steady beeping, reminding me that my daughter was still fighting.

Still alive.

But now I knew something else.

Someone had been fighting against her.

A nurse entered the room carrying a clipboard.

“Mrs. Carter, the doctor will be back soon. We need to keep monitoring the baby’s heart rate.””

I nodded.

Then I stopped her.

“Can I ask you something?””

“Of course.””

“If someone was trying to harm my pregnancy… would blood tests show that?””

The nurse’s expression changed slightly.

She had heard enough stories to know that question was never asked casually.

“It depends on what happened,” she said carefully.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Her doctor said the results looked unusual.””

The nurse glanced at my chart.

“I can’t discuss medical details, but I can tell you this: if there’s concern about outside substances, the hospital will investigate.””

Outside substances.

The words stayed in my mind.

Because suddenly I remembered every strange moment from the past few months.

Rachel bringing me tea when I visited my parents.

My mother insisting I take vitamins she bought.

The constant comments.

“You’re getting too attached to that baby already.””

“You know things happen during pregnancy.””

“You shouldn’t assume everything will go perfectly.””

At the time, I thought they were just insensitive.

Now, every memory felt different.

Daniel noticed my face.

“What are you remembering?””

I looked at him.

“All those times they talked about the baby.””

His jaw tightened.

“Tell me everything.””

So I did.

I told him about Rachel’s jealousy.

About the comments she made when we announced the pregnancy.

About the way my mother reacted when we told the family we were creating a trust fund for our daughter.

The trust.

That was the word that made Daniel suddenly go still.

“What trust fund?””

I looked at him.

“You know about it.””

“I know we were setting aside money for her future.””

“No,” I said slowly.

“I mean the family trust.””

His expression changed.

“What family trust?””

A chill moved through me.

“Daniel… my grandfather’s trust.””

He stared at me.

The silence answered before he did.

“You never told me about that.””

“I thought I did.””

“No, Lily.””

He shook his head.

“You told me your grandfather left you something. You never said there were conditions.””

I swallowed.

Because suddenly I realized something.

The trust was the reason my family had been acting strangely.

After my grandfather died, his attorney had explained everything.

My grandfather had created a large family trust years before.

But there was one unusual condition.

The money would not transfer completely until the birth of his first great-grandchild.

My daughter.

The baby growing inside me was the key.

And someone wanted that key gone.

A knock came at the door.

A police officer stepped inside.

“Mrs. Carter?””

Daniel stood immediately.

“Yes?””

The officer held up a small evidence bag.

“Your cousin gave us the original video file. We’re preserving it as evidence.””

“Did you arrest my sister?”” I asked.

The officer hesitated.

“She hasn’t been arrested yet.””

My anger rose.

“She kicked me.””

“We understand that.””

“She lied.””

“We understand that too.””

“Then why isn’t she arrested?””

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“Because your family members are already telling different stories, and we need to establish exactly what happened.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“The video establishes exactly what happened.””

The officer nodded.

“It helps.””

“Helps?””

“Yes. But there’s another issue.””

“What issue?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“Your father attempted to take your cousin’s phone.””

My stomach twisted.

“And?””

“And your mother removed documents from the house before officers arrived.””

The room became silent.

“Documents?”” Daniel asked.

The officer nodded.

“Your cousin said she saw her carrying a folder.””

I looked at Daniel.

The same folder from the video.

The one my mother held while watching me get attacked.

“What was in that folder?”” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

But we were about to find out.

Two hours later, my father finally arrived at the hospital.

Not to apologize.

Not to ask how I was.

He walked into the room with the same expression he wore during business meetings.

Cold.

Controlled.

Like emotions were weaknesses.

“Lily,” he said.

I looked away.

“Are you here to see if your granddaughter is alive?””

His face tightened.

“Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Turn this into something bigger than it is.””

Daniel stood beside me.

“She was kicked in the stomach.””

My father sighed.

“Rachel lost her temper.””

I stared at him.

“Lost her temper?””

“She’s pregnant too.””

The words hit me like another blow.

I looked at him.

“What does Rachel being pregnant have to do with anything?””

My father looked toward the hallway.

Then lowered his voice.

“You know your sister has been under stress.””

“So that excuses trying to hurt my baby?””

“She didn’t mean—”

“Stop.””

My voice surprised even me.

I had spent my entire life trying to keep peace in my family.

Not anymore.

My father looked at me.

“You’re angry right now.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m finally seeing clearly.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where is the folder?””

My father’s expression changed.

“What folder?””

“The one your wife took from the house.””

A brief flash crossed his face.

Fear.

Then it disappeared.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a woman’s voice whispered.

“Lily?””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

It was my mother.

“Mom?””

“Listen to me carefully.””

Daniel moved closer.

My mother’s voice trembled.

“I made a mistake.””

I said nothing.

“I thought we could fix this before it went too far.””

My hands tightened around the phone.

“What did you do?””

A long pause.

Then she whispered:

“Your sister wasn’t supposed to kick you.””

The room went silent.

Daniel’s face hardened.

My mother continued.

“It was only supposed to scare you.””

My heart started racing.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Rachel was never the person who planned this.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was already recording the call.

“Then who was?””

My mother began crying.

And the next words changed everything.

“Lily… your father knew the baby had to disappear.””

I stopped breathing.

My mother whispered through the phone.

“He didn’t want your daughter born.””

A cold wave moved through my entire body.

“Why?””

My mother didn’t answer.

Not immediately.

When she finally spoke, her voice was barely audible.

“Because the trust wasn’t the only thing your grandfather left behind.””

I gripped the blanket.

“What else did he leave?””

The line crackled.

My mother sounded terrified.

“A letter.””

“What letter?””

“A letter that your grandfather ordered to be opened only after your baby was born.””

I looked at Daniel.

He stared back at me.

“Why would my father care about a letter?””

My mother cried harder.

“Because your grandfather knew.””

“Knew what?””

The silence lasted so long I thought the call had dropped.

Then my mother said:

“He knew someone in this family would try to stop your daughter from being born.””

The call ended.

At that exact moment, the doctor rushed into the room.

Her face was pale.

“Mrs. Carter.””

I looked up.

“What happened?””

She held my chart tightly.

“We received the additional lab results.””

My heart sank.

“And?””

The doctor took a breath.

“The substance in your blood wasn’t random.””

Daniel grabbed my hand.

“What was it?””

The doctor looked directly at me.

“It was a medication designed to cause pregnancy complications.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who gave it to me?””

The doctor didn’t answer.

Instead, she opened a file.

Inside was a record of every medication and supplement I had taken in the past month.

One item was circled.

A bottle I recognized immediately.

A bottle my mother had placed in my hands three weeks earlier.

The doctor pointed to the name.

“Mrs. Carter…”

May you like

Her voice softened.

“This prescription was filled under your sister’s name.””
