Chapter 9: The Showcase That Changed Everything

The morning of the Young Designers Showcase arrived with rain.

I stood in the studio wearing my lavender sweater, staring at the turquoise gown.

The dress looked beautiful.

But it wasn't the one I had designed for myself anymore.

It had become a reminder of everything my family had tried to take.

I ran my fingers over the crystal butterflies.

Then I looked at the midnight-blue gown hanging beside it.

That was the dress I wanted to show the world.

I had spent the previous five days creating it.

The fabric came from my grandmother's archive.

The silver butterflies were embroidered by hand.

The neckline was simple, but the sleeves flowed like wings.

When I moved the dress, the layers of organza caught the light.

I had named it Freedom.

At eight o'clock, Daniel arrived with Eleanor.

Eleanor carried a garment bag.

Daniel held a folder.

"Ready?"" he asked.

I nodded.

Eleanor looked at the dress.

"Maya, this is extraordinary.""

I smiled.

"Thank you.""

She touched the fabric gently.

"Your grandmother would have loved this.""

Daniel checked his watch.

"We should leave in fifteen minutes.""

I looked around the studio.

The shelves.

The sewing machine.

The old wooden table.

Everything that had once felt like a place I could lose at any moment.

Now it felt like something I could protect.

Before leaving, I placed Grandma's photograph beside the sewing machine.

"I'll be back," I whispered.

The showcase was being held in a large convention hall downtown.

There were bright lights, camera crews, fashion buyers, and hundreds of visitors.

A long runway stretched across the center.

Young designers stood beside their creations, waiting for the judges to arrive.

I had never seen anything like it.

My heart pounded.

Eleanor walked beside me.

"Remember, Maya. You don't have to impress everyone. Just show them what you see.""

I nodded.

We reached my assigned station.

A woman in a black dress approached with a clipboard.

"Name?""

"Maya Carter.""

She checked the list.

"You're contestant number seventeen.""

She looked at the garment bag.

"Is this your original design?""

"Yes.""

"Wonderful. Please have everything ready by eleven.""

I nodded.

Then I noticed someone across the room.

Brianna.

She stood beside Vanessa.

My mother wore a cream-colored suit and a diamond necklace.

Brianna was holding the turquoise gown.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Eleanor noticed my expression.

"Do you want me to speak with them?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

I wasn't going to let them ruin this day.

But Brianna had already seen me.

She walked toward my station.

"Hey.""

I looked up.

"What are you doing here?""

"I'm watching.""

She glanced at the midnight-blue dress.

"Is that yours?""

"Yes.""

She studied it.

Then she nodded.

"It's beautiful.""

I wasn't sure how to respond.

"Thank you.""

Brianna looked toward Vanessa.

"Mom wants to talk to you.""

"I don't want to talk to her.""

"She says it's important.""

I looked at my sister.

"Then she can talk to Daniel.""

Brianna sighed.

"Fine.""

She walked away.

A few minutes later, Vanessa approached.

She looked directly at my dress.

"What is this?""

"My showcase entry.""

She touched the sleeve.

"How much fabric did you use?""

I stepped closer.

"Please don't touch it.""

Vanessa withdrew her hand.

"You're making a spectacle of yourself.""

I looked at her.

"I'm entering a competition. That's what people do here.""

Her expression hardened.

"Do you really think these people care about you?""

I didn't answer.

"They care about money. Connections. Names. You have none of those.""

Eleanor appeared beside me.

"Actually, Maya has quite a few.""

Vanessa turned.

Eleanor smiled politely.

"I'm Eleanor Hayes. Aurora House Fashion Group.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"I know who you are.""

"Then you know that Maya's work is being reviewed by our creative team.""

Vanessa looked at the dress again.

"She's twelve.""

"Yes. And extraordinarily talented.""

My mother lowered her voice.

"She is my daughter.""

Eleanor nodded.

"That doesn't give you ownership of her work.""

Vanessa's lips tightened.

Daniel approached before she could respond.

"Mrs. Carter, we need to discuss the documents you submitted to the trustee.""

Vanessa looked around.

"Not here.""

"Then perhaps you should have responded to the previous notices.""

She stared at him.

Then she turned and walked away.

I watched her go.

My hands were trembling.

Eleanor gently squeezed my shoulder.

"Don't give her another thought.""

At eleven thirty, the judges began reviewing the entries.

They stopped at my station.

One was a fashion professor.

Another was a designer from London.

The third was a woman who worked with an international clothing brand.

The professor studied my sketch.

"Why did you choose this silhouette?""

I took a breath.

"I wanted the dress to look delicate without appearing fragile.""

He nodded.

"And the butterflies?""

"They represent change. But they also represent freedom.""

The woman from London examined the embroidery.

"Did you do this yourself?""

"Yes.""

"By hand?""

"Every butterfly.""

She looked impressed.

"How long did it take?""

"Almost thirty hours.""

The professor turned toward me.

"Who taught you?""

"My grandmother.""

He smiled.

"Was she a designer?""

I nodded.

"Evelyn Carter.""

The three judges exchanged looks.

The woman from London leaned forward.

"You're Evelyn Carter's granddaughter?""

"Yes.""

She looked at the dress again.

"Then I understand why this work feels familiar.""

The judges asked several more questions.

I answered as honestly as I could.

When they finished, the professor smiled.

"Thank you, Maya.""

I stepped back.

My heart was racing.

I didn't know whether they liked the dress.

But I had done my best.

At noon, the runway presentation began.

One by one, the contestants introduced their designs.

Some dresses were dramatic.

Others were elegant.

One featured hundreds of tiny lights sewn into the fabric.

The audience applauded after each presentation.

Then the announcer called my name.

"Maya Carter, presenting her original design, Freedom.""

I stepped onto the runway.

The lights were bright.

The audience became a blur.

I walked slowly, holding my shoulders straight.

The midnight-blue fabric moved around me.

The silver butterflies caught the light.

At the end of the runway, I turned.

For one second, I imagined Grandma sitting in the front row.

Smiling.

Clapping.

Then I heard someone gasp.

I looked toward the judges.

The woman from London was standing.

She whispered something to the professor.

Then the audience began applauding.

I walked back behind the curtain.

Eleanor was waiting.

She hugged me.

"You did it.""

I smiled.

But before I could say anything, Daniel approached.

"Maya, we have a situation.""

My smile faded.

"What happened?""

He pointed toward the entrance.

Vanessa was speaking with a representative from the event organizers.

Brianna stood beside her.

And the turquoise gown was hanging over her arm.

I frowned.

"What are they doing?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Your mother has submitted a complaint claiming that the dress you're presenting was created using designs owned by her family.""

I stared at him.

"But the dress is mine.""

"I know.""

"She can't do that.""

"We have documentation.""

Across the hall, Vanessa pointed toward the stage.

The organizer approached us.

"Ms. Carter, I'm afraid we need to verify the ownership of certain design elements before proceeding with the final judging.""

I felt my throat tighten.

Daniel opened his folder.

"Fortunately, we have the original sketches, construction photographs, and trust documents.""

The organizer examined them.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Those designs were developed by my mother. I have every right to use them.""

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Your mother assigned the relevant rights to the trust.""

Vanessa turned.

"That's disputed.""

Daniel handed the organizer another document.

"No longer.""

The organizer read the page.

Then looked at Vanessa.

"Mrs. Carter, we cannot accept your complaint without supporting evidence.""

Vanessa's expression darkened.

"You're taking the word of a child over mine?""

The organizer looked at me.

Then at the dress.

"We're taking the evidence into consideration.""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But Brianna suddenly stepped forward.

"Wait.""

Everyone turned.

Brianna looked at the turquoise gown.

Then at the organizer.

"There's something you should know.""

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

"Brianna, don't.""

My sister pulled away.

"Mom, stop.""

She took a breath.

"Maya made that dress. I didn't.""

The room went quiet.

Brianna continued.

"I wore it to an event and told people I designed it. That wasn't true.""

Vanessa's face went white.

"Brianna!""

My sister looked at her.

"I'm tired of lying.""

She turned toward the organizer.

"I also knew Maya was entering this competition. I knew the dress was hers when I took it.""

I stared at my sister.

I had never expected her to say those words in public.

The organizer nodded.

"Thank you for clarifying.""

Vanessa stepped backward.

For the first time, she had no one willing to stand beside her.

Then Brianna looked at me.

"I'm sorry, Maya.""

I nodded slowly.

I wasn't ready to forgive everything.

But I believed she meant it.

The final results were announced at three o'clock.

All contestants stood onstage.

I was near the back, holding my hands together.

The announcer opened the envelope.

"The recipient of the Evelyn Carter Young Designer Scholarship is...""

My heart seemed to stop.

"Maya Carter!""

For a moment, I couldn't move.

Then Eleanor began clapping.

Daniel smiled.

Mrs. Harper, who had arrived just before the ceremony, stood up and cheered.

I walked forward.

The announcer handed me a beautiful glass trophy.

The audience applauded.

I looked at the trophy.

Then at the judges.

Then at the front row.

Brianna was standing.

She was crying.

And beside her, Vanessa sat completely still.

I held the microphone.

"Thank you.""

My voice trembled.

"I want to thank my grandmother, Evelyn Carter. She taught me that making something beautiful takes patience, courage, and love.""

I paused.

"She also taught me that nobody should have to give up their dreams just because someone else wants them.""

The audience applauded again.

I looked down at the trophy.

"And I hope that someday, another young designer will get the same chance she gave me.""

The applause grew louder.

I smiled.

For the first time, I wasn't standing in my mother's shadow.

I was standing in my own light.

But the biggest surprise came after the ceremony.

Eleanor approached with Margaret.

Margaret held a small velvet box.

"Congratulations, sweetheart.""

"Thank you.""

She opened the box.

Inside was an old gold ring.

A tiny butterfly was engraved across the surface.

"Your grandmother wore this when she signed the original partnership agreement.""

I stared at it.

"Why are you giving it to me?""

Margaret smiled.

"Because today, you became the person she always believed you could be.""

I slipped the ring onto my finger.

Then Margaret whispered:

"There's one more thing, Maya. Your grandmother left instructions that were supposed to be revealed only after you won this scholarship.""

My heart began pounding.

"What instructions?""

Margaret looked toward Daniel.

May you like

He opened his briefcase.

And removed a sealed document.
