Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew My Grandmother's Secret
"Hello, this is Vanessa Carter.""
My mother paced in front of the sewing table while I stood beside the blue silk.
"Yes, I need you to send someone to the property today.""
I listened carefully.
"There's a child refusing to cooperate with the arrangements.""
My stomach dropped.
She was calling someone about me.
"Mom, who are you talking to?""
She raised one finger, ordering me to be quiet.
"Yes. I want the equipment removed before the end of the week.""
I stared at her.
The sewing machine.
Grandma's machine.
The one she had given me when I was seven.
Vanessa was arranging to have it taken away.
I stepped forward.
"You can't do that.""
She ended the call.
"Watch me.""
I felt my hands begin to shake.
"That's Grandma's machine.""
"Everything in this room is going to be cleared.""
"But I need it for the showcase.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You're still talking about that ridiculous competition?""
"It's not ridiculous.""
"Your sister is attending an important event this week. You should focus on supporting her.""
I looked toward the turquoise dress hanging in Brianna's bedroom doorway.
The crystals were still sparkling.
But one butterfly was missing.
"Why does everything have to be about Brianna?""
Vanessa turned.
"Because Brianna understands how the world works.""
"What does that mean?""
"It means she knows how to use opportunities. She knows how to present herself. She understands that talent means nothing without connections.""
I looked at the sketches on my table.
"Then why are you taking my work?""
Her mouth tightened.
"Because your sister knows how to turn it into something valuable.""
I stared at her.
For a moment, I couldn't believe she had said it aloud.
Then she picked up the blue silk and walked toward the door.
"You're finished here.""
I followed her.
"Give it back.""
"No.""
"Please, Mom.""
She stopped.
I hated how small my voice sounded.
"I worked so hard.""
Vanessa turned.
"And what exactly do you expect me to do? Put your little dress on display while your sister has a future to build?""
I looked at her.
"Why can't we both have a future?""
She didn't answer.
She simply walked away with the fabric.
At noon, a man arrived at the house.
He wore a gray work uniform and carried a clipboard.
Vanessa met him at the front door.
"You're here about the studio?""
"Yes, ma'am.""
I heard them from the hallway.
"Everything in the room needs to be packed," Vanessa said.
"The machine, the shelves, the cabinets, all of it.""
I ran downstairs.
"Stop!""
The man looked at me.
Vanessa turned sharply.
"Maya, go upstairs.""
I stood in front of the studio door.
"You can't take Grandma's things.""
The man looked uncomfortable.
"Ma'am, is there a problem?""
Vanessa smiled politely.
"No. She's just upset.""
I looked at him.
"Please don't take the sewing machine. It belongs to my grandmother.""
He lowered his clipboard.
"Maybe we should check the paperwork.""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"I have the authority to handle this property.""
I reached into my backpack and pulled out the copy of the trust document Daniel had given me.
"This says the building and equipment belong to the Evelyn Carter Trust.""
The man looked at the document.
Vanessa snatched it from my hand.
"That is private family paperwork.""
He hesitated.
"Ma'am, I can't remove anything if there's a legal dispute.""
"There is no dispute.""
"Then I need written authorization.""
Vanessa stared at him.
I could see her anger rising.
Finally, she handed the document back.
"Fine. Leave.""
The man packed up his clipboard and walked away.
For a moment, I thought I had won.
Then Vanessa turned toward me.
"You have no idea what you've done.""
I held the document against my chest.
"Neither do you.""
Her hand rose.
I flinched.
But she didn't hit me.
Instead, she leaned close and whispered:
"You are going to regret making me look like a fool.""
That afternoon, Daniel called.
"Maya, I've spoken with the independent trustee.""
"What did they say?""
"They have agreed to suspend the proposed sale pending a full review.""
I sat down.
"So the building is safe?""
"For now, yes.""
I let out a breath.
Then Daniel continued.
"There's something else. A representative from Aurora House Fashion Group contacted me.""
My eyes widened.
"The company that sells Grandma's designs?""
"Exactly. They learned that the Butterfly Collection may have a new successor.""
"Who told them?""
"I did.""
My heart began racing.
"What do they want?""
"They want to see your work.""
I looked at my sketches.
"Mine?""
"Yes. They have been searching for someone who understands Evelyn's design philosophy.""
I didn't know what to say.
Daniel continued.
"They have also expressed interest in sponsoring a young designer's education.""
I pressed my hand against my mouth.
"Does that mean I could go to the fashion institute?""
"Possibly. But first, they need to meet you.""
"When?""
"Tomorrow.""
I looked at the empty mannequin.
Then at the sketches spread across the table.
"Tell them I'll be there.""
The next morning, I wore my lavender sweater and my cleanest dark skirt.
I carried my portfolio in a canvas bag.
Vanessa noticed me leaving.
"Where are you going?""
"To meet someone.""
"Who?""
"Someone who wants to see my designs.""
She laughed.
"You're still pretending this is going to happen?""
I didn't answer.
Brianna appeared behind her.
"Mom, are you seriously letting her go?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"She'll be back when she realizes nobody is interested.""
I walked out.
Aurora House Fashion Group occupied the top floors of a glass building downtown.
The lobby was enormous.
There were marble floors, modern sculptures, and a large display of dresses behind glass.
I felt very small walking through the entrance.
Daniel met me near the reception desk.
"You look wonderful, Maya.""
"Thank you.""
He led me upstairs.
A woman in her late forties was waiting in a conference room.
She had short auburn hair, elegant glasses, and a cream-colored suit.
"Maya, this is Eleanor Hayes," Daniel said.
"She is the creative director.""
Eleanor stood and offered me her hand.
"I've heard a great deal about your grandmother.""
I shook her hand.
"She was my favorite person.""
Eleanor smiled.
"She was one of mine too.""
She opened my portfolio.
For several minutes, she examined my sketches without speaking.
I began to worry.
Then she stopped at the design I had created the previous night.
It was a midnight-blue gown with layers of sheer fabric and tiny silver butterflies embroidered along the sleeves.
Eleanor looked up.
"Did you create this?""
"Yes.""
"How long did it take?""
"About three hours for the first sketch.""
She studied it again.
"Why butterflies?""
I thought about Grandma.
"Because they change without losing who they are.""
Eleanor smiled.
"That's a beautiful answer.""
She turned to Daniel.
"She has Evelyn's eye.""
Then she looked back at me.
"Would you be interested in showing us how you work?""
I nodded.
She led me into a design room.
There were cutting tables, mannequins, sewing machines, and shelves filled with fabrics.
I had never seen so many beautiful materials in one place.
Eleanor handed me a sketch of a simple evening dress.
"Show me how you would develop this.""
I studied the drawing.
Then I picked up a pencil.
I suggested changing the neckline, adding a structured waist, and using layered organza to create movement.
Eleanor watched quietly.
Then she handed me a fabric sample.
"What would you do with this?""
I held it up to the light.
"Layer it over something darker. It would look like the night sky.""
She smiled.
"Exactly.""
For the next hour, we talked about colors, shapes, stitching, and the difference between copying a design and understanding its purpose.
I forgot to be nervous.
I forgot about Vanessa.
I forgot about Brianna.
For the first time, I was simply Maya.
A girl who loved making beautiful things.
At the end of the meeting, Eleanor closed my portfolio.
"I would like to invite you to participate in our Young Creators Mentorship Program.""
My eyes widened.
"Really?""
"Yes. It includes professional training, materials, and a scholarship opportunity.""
I felt tears gathering.
"Thank you.""
Eleanor reached across the table.
"Don't thank me yet. You have work to do.""
I smiled.
"I can do that.""
Then she added something unexpected.
"There's one more reason I wanted to meet you.""
I looked up.
"Your grandmother left something with our company many years ago.""
Daniel became very still.
Eleanor opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope.
It had my grandmother's handwriting.
Across the front were four words:
*For Maya. When She Comes.*
I stared at it.
"What's inside?""
Eleanor handed it to me.
"Your grandmother asked us to keep this safe until you were old enough to understand what it meant.""
I carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed my grandmother standing beside a young woman wearing a stunning turquoise gown.
But the woman wasn't Vanessa.
And she wasn't anyone I recognized.
On the back, Grandma had written:
The first person who believed in me was not my mother. She was a woman who gave me a chance when my own family tried to take my work.
I looked at Eleanor.
"Who is she?""
Eleanor took a slow breath.
"That is your grandmother's first business partner.""
"Where is she now?""
Eleanor hesitated.
"Her name is Margaret Hayes. She is my mother.""
I looked between Eleanor and Daniel.
Eleanor continued.
"She has been trying to find Evelyn's granddaughter for years.""
"Why?""
Eleanor opened another folder.
Inside was a copy of an old business agreement.
At the top were two names:
*EVELYN CARTER*
*MARGARET HAYES*
And beneath them was a clause that made Daniel's expression change.
Eleanor pointed to the final paragraph.
"Your grandmother didn't just leave you the design house, Maya.""
She paused.
"She left you something that could change the entire fashion industry.""
Before I could ask what she meant, Eleanor's phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Then her expression turned serious.
"I'm sorry. We have a problem.""
"What's wrong?""
She turned the phone toward me.
It was a social media post from Brianna.
A photograph of her wearing my turquoise gown.
The caption read:
Introducing my first original collection. Inspired by the timeless designs of my grandmother, Evelyn Carter. Big things are coming.
I stared at the screen.
Then I noticed the comments.
One of them was from a well-known fashion magazine.
We would love to discuss your upcoming collection.
Brianna wasn't just stealing my dress anymore.
She was claiming my grandmother's entire legacy.
And Eleanor had just realized something.
She looked at Daniel.
"Does Vanessa know about the original partnership agreement?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not yet.""
Eleanor closed the folder.
"Then we need to move quickly.""
I looked at the photograph in my hands.
For the first time, I understood that my grandmother had been protecting more than a building or a collection of dresses.
May you like
She had been protecting a secret.
And my mother had been trying to destroy it before I could discover the truth.
