Chapter 9: The Family Meeting

Michael Bennett arrived at the family estate at 6:15 p.m.

He didn't come alone.

Daniel was with him.

I stood in the entrance hall beside Margaret while Richard waited near the staircase.

Michael was in his late sixties, with silver hair and a polished appearance that reminded me of Richard.

He wore a navy suit and carried a leather portfolio.

He smiled when he saw me.

"Emily. It's been a long time.""

I didn't return the greeting.

"Not long enough.""

His smile faded slightly.

Richard stepped forward.

"What are you doing here?""

Michael removed his gloves.

"I heard there was a misunderstanding about the partnership.""

Richard laughed once.

"A misunderstanding?""

"Money has been moved around. People are upset. I thought we should discuss it like adults.""

I looked at Daniel.

He avoided my eyes.

Margaret folded her arms.

"Interesting. You didn't seem interested in discussing anything when Emily's father was alive.""

Michael's expression hardened.

"Margaret, let's not turn this into an emotional conversation.""

"Then stop treating people like numbers on a spreadsheet.""

Richard gestured toward the dining room.

"Sit down.""

Michael walked in.

Daniel followed.

I remained standing.

Michael placed his portfolio on the table.

"I've reviewed the documents. There are several questions about the trust's validity.""

Caroline, who had arrived earlier, opened her folder.

"The trust was established legally and has been independently verified.""

Michael waved his hand.

"That's not the issue.""

"Then what is?""

He looked directly at me.

"Your father made several decisions while his health was deteriorating. We need to establish whether he was competent when he signed the final amendment.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"You think he didn't know what he was signing?""

Michael nodded.

"That is one possibility.""

I stepped closer.

"My father was perfectly capable of making his own decisions.""

Michael gave a sympathetic smile.

"Of course you would say that.""

Richard slammed his hand on the table.

"Don't.""

Michael looked at him.

"Richard, I understand you're protective of Emily, but this is a business matter.""

"No. It's an investigation into fraud.""

Michael's expression changed.

"Careful.""

Caroline placed a document on the table.

"This is the authorization you submitted eleven months ago.""

Michael glanced at it.

"I didn't submit anything.""

"The document originated from your company.""

"Then your records are wrong.""

Caroline placed another page beside it.

"Here is the payment Daniel made to your company two months ago.""

Michael didn't move.

Then she placed the final document in front of him.

"Here is the witness statement connecting Daniel to the original amendment submitted shortly before Mr. Rose's death.""

Daniel stood.

"That's enough.""

I turned toward him.

"Why?""

He looked at me.

"Emily, please.""

"No. Why were you there?""

Michael closed his portfolio.

"This is getting out of hand.""

Richard moved toward him.

"Sit down.""

Michael stood.

"You have no authority to interrogate me.""

Richard's voice was cold.

"I have every authority to ask why you used my son's company to move money from a partnership you were removed from twenty years ago.""

Michael looked at Daniel.

Then he smiled.

"Your son was very cooperative.""

Daniel's face went white.

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?""

Michael shrugged.

"Ask him.""

Daniel shook his head.

"He's lying.""

Michael laughed.

"Really? You signed the invoices. You created the LLC.

You used your wife's identity. You arranged the transfers.""

"Because you told me it was legitimate!""

Michael leaned back.

"I told you it was an opportunity.""

Daniel's voice rose.

"You said the trust documents were invalid!""

"They were.""

"No, they weren't!""

Michael looked at him.

"Then why did you keep signing?""

The room went silent.

I stared at my husband.

He had just admitted that he knew the documents were false.

I felt something inside me finally settle.

There was no misunderstanding.

No confusion.

No unfortunate mistake.

Daniel had known.

He had participated.

And he had expected me to remain unaware.

I turned toward Caroline.

"Can we proceed without him?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

Michael looked surprised.

"Excuse me?""

Caroline opened a document.

"Emily Bennett has been verified as the sole beneficiary and controlling party of the Rose Family Trust. The independent trustee has approved the immediate transfer of beneficial control.""

She turned the document toward me.

"Your father's conditions have been satisfied.""

I looked at the signature line.

My name.

This time, it was mine to sign.

I picked up the pen.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Emily, wait.""

I didn't look at him.

"Don't.""

"Please. You don't understand what this means.""

I signed.

Caroline took the document.

"Thank you.""

Jonathan Pierce, who had been sitting quietly near the window, stood.

"Effective immediately, Emily Rose Bennett assumes control of her father's interest in the partnership.""

Michael's expression changed.

"You can't do that.""

Jonathan nodded.

"We just did.""

Michael looked toward Richard.

"This isn't finished.""

Richard stared at him.

"It has been finished for twenty years. You simply refused to accept it.""

Michael turned toward Daniel.

"Tell them.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Tell them what?""

Michael's voice became sharp.

"Tell them about the original agreement.""

Daniel looked terrified.

I stood.

"What original agreement?""

Michael opened his portfolio again.

He removed a document and placed it on the table.

"This agreement was signed by your father and Richard shortly before his death. It establishes that if Emily's marriage ends under certain circumstances, her beneficial interest can be transferred to an independent family foundation.""

I looked at Caroline.

"Is that true?""

She examined the document.

Her expression became serious.

"I'll need to verify this.""

Michael smiled.

"Of course.""

I looked at him.

"What does this have to do with my marriage?""

Michael folded his hands.

"Your father wanted to ensure the partnership remained protected. He believed your marriage would eventually become a problem.""

I felt sick.

"You're saying my father expected Daniel to betray me?""

Michael shrugged.

"He expected that possibility.""

Daniel suddenly stepped forward.

"That's not what the agreement says.""

Michael turned.

"Then explain it.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Emily, your father included a clause that required you to remain married until the partnership transition was complete.""

Caroline looked up sharply.

"That is not accurate.""

Daniel continued.

"If the marriage ended before the transition, the assets would be placed into a foundation.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I thought we could complete the transfer first.""

Michael laughed.

"Exactly.""

I looked at Caroline.

She studied the document again.

Then she turned it over.

There was a page attached to the back.

Her expression changed.

"Mr. Bennett, where did you obtain this document?""

Michael didn't answer.

"Where did you obtain it?""

"From the original files.""

Caroline shook her head.

"This is not an executed agreement.""

Michael's smile disappeared.

"What?""

"The signature page is missing. The document has no independent witness certification, and the reference number does not match the trust register.""

Jonathan approached.

He examined it.

Then he looked at Michael.

"This is a fabricated document.""

Michael's face hardened.

"That's absurd.""

Jonathan placed it on the table.

"Your brother never signed this.""

Richard looked at Michael.

"Did you create it?""

Michael said nothing.

Daniel stared at the document.

Then he whispered:

"You told me it was real.""

Michael turned toward him.

"Shut up.""

The words came out so viciously that even Daniel recoiled.

I looked at my husband.

"How much did you know?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Emily...""

"How much?""

He lowered his eyes.

"I knew Michael had altered some documents.""

I felt dizzy.

"Some?""

"He said the changes were temporary.""

I stared at him.

"And you believed him?""

"I wanted to believe him.""

"Why?""

Daniel looked at me.

Then he said something that made Margaret close her eyes.

"Because I thought once I had the money, I could finally choose the life I wanted.""

I nodded slowly.

"You chose it already.""

He reached toward me.

I stepped away.

"No, Daniel. You chose it every morning you woke up and lied to me.""

Caroline collected the documents.

"Everyone needs to stop discussing this. We will preserve the records and notify the appropriate authorities.""

Michael picked up his portfolio.

"This is a mistake.""

Richard stepped aside.

"Leave.""

Michael looked at him.

"You'll regret this.""

Richard's voice remained steady.

"I regretted trusting you a long time ago.""

Michael walked out.

Daniel remained.

He looked at me with wet eyes.

"Emily, please. I don't want to lose you.""

I looked at the wedding ring on my finger.

Then I removed it.

I placed it on the table.

"You already did.""

He stared at the ring.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

Then his phone buzzed.

He looked down.

A message from Victoria.

I couldn't read the entire screen.

But I saw the first line.

Daniel, the man who contacted me is here. He says he has the DNA results.

Daniel's face drained of color.

He looked at me.

May you like

Then he whispered:

"Sophie isn't my daughter.""
