Chapter 8: The Truth Behind My Father's Death

I couldn't move.

Richard stood in the doorway, looking older than I had ever seen him.

Margaret held the letter in both hands.

I looked from one to the other.

"Are you telling me my father was murdered?""

Richard shook his head immediately.

"No. I'm telling you that someone tried to stop him from exposing financial misconduct, and I never understood how far that person was willing to go.""

"Who?""

"Michael.""

I stared at him.

"Your brother?""

Richard nodded.

"Michael was involved in the original partnership. Your father discovered irregularities in several accounts and confronted him.""

"Did my father report him?""

"He intended to.""

"Then what happened?""

Richard pulled out a chair.

"Your father was hospitalized after collapsing at home. The doctors diagnosed complications from an existing heart condition.""

I remembered that day.

I was twenty-seven.

I had been living in another state for work.

Daniel had driven me to the hospital.

He had held my hand while I cried.

He had told me everything would be okay.

Richard continued.

"Your father had been under considerable stress. He believed someone had accessed his private financial records.""

I swallowed.

"Was there evidence?""

"Not enough at the time.""

"Did Michael visit him?""

Richard looked down.

"Yes.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"When?""

"Two days before he died.""

I gripped the back of the chair.

"What did he say?""

"I don't know. Your father was conscious when Michael visited. But afterward, he asked the hospital staff not to let him return.""

Margaret closed her eyes.

I looked at her.

"You knew?""

"Only that they had argued.""

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

Richard looked ashamed.

"Your father wanted to protect you.""

I shook my head.

"Everyone keeps saying that. Everyone decided I was too fragile to know what was happening in my own family.""

Richard lowered his eyes.

"You're right.""

The room became quiet.

Then he added:

"There's something else. After your father's death, Michael tried to claim that the partnership agreement was invalid.""

I looked at the photograph from the office.

"Did he succeed?""

"No. Jonathan had the original documents. But Michael never accepted the decision.""

"Where is he now?""

Richard hesitated.

"Living in Florida.""

My phone buzzed.

Caroline.

I answered immediately.

"Emily, I need you to come to the office tomorrow morning.""

"What happened?""

"We received additional bank records. There's a transaction we need to discuss.""

"Is it connected to Daniel?""

"Yes. And to Michael.""

I looked at Richard.

"What kind of transaction?""

Caroline lowered her voice.

"A payment made shortly before your father's death.""

My throat tightened.

"To whom?""

"Michael Bennett.""

The following morning, I arrived at Caroline's office with Margaret.

Richard joined us ten minutes later.

Caroline had arranged several bank statements on the conference table.

"These records were obtained from the partnership's archived accounts," she explained.

She pointed to a transfer.

"Three days before your father collapsed, a payment of four hundred thousand dollars was made to a consulting company.""

I studied the name.

"Who owns it?""

"Michael Bennett.""

Richard cursed under his breath.

Caroline continued.

"The payment was authorized through a temporary account created using credentials belonging to your father.""

I looked up.

"Was it him?""

"We don't know. But the electronic records show the authorization came from a device registered to Michael.""

Richard's face hardened.

"That bastard.""

I looked at him.

"Did you know about the payment?""

"No.""

"Did you investigate?""

"Yes. But the records were incomplete.""

Caroline placed another sheet on the table.

"This is more recent.""

The date was from two months ago.

A payment of $175,000 had been made to the same consulting company.

The authorization came from Daniel's business account.

I stared at the page.

"Daniel paid Michael?""

Caroline nodded.

"That's what the records indicate.""

I felt sick.

"Why?""

Richard leaned back.

"Michael may have been helping Daniel access the partnership funds.""

I closed my eyes.

The affair.

The false accounts.

The forged signatures.

The mysterious house.

The money.

All of it was connected.

But I still didn't understand Victoria.

"Was she involved?""

Caroline turned to another file.

"Victoria Hale received payments from the LLC that purchased the Lake Forest property.""

I stared at her.

"How much?""

"Approximately $320,000 over the last eighteen months.""

Margaret looked stunned.

"Why would Daniel pay her that much?""

Caroline hesitated.

"According to the transaction descriptions, the payments were categorized as consulting services.""

I let out a bitter laugh.

"Consulting.""

Caroline didn't smile.

"There's one more thing. Victoria also received a payment from Michael's company.""

I looked up.

"How much?""

"Fifty thousand dollars.""

Richard stood.

"That's enough.""

Caroline raised a hand.

"We need to be careful. We have financial evidence, but we don't yet know what each person understood about the transactions.""

I stared at the papers.

"Then let's find out.""

That afternoon, I received a message from Victoria.

We need to talk. Alone.

I ignored it.

A minute later, she called.

I answered.

"What do you want?""

Her voice sounded different.

No playful confidence.

No charming smile.

Just fear.

"Emily, please. I need to explain something.""

"You had plenty of opportunities.""

"I know.""

"Then why now?""

"Because Daniel has been lying to both of us.""

I laughed.

"That's hardly news.""

Victoria was silent.

Then she said:

"Michael promised me the money was legitimate.""

I straightened.

"What?""

"He told me Daniel was entitled to manage the investment accounts. He said you knew everything.""

I looked toward Margaret.

She had turned to face me.

"How long have you been talking to Michael?""

Victoria hesitated.

"About two years.""

Two years.

Before Daniel's affair became obvious.

Before the house.

Before the account.

"Why?""

"Because he said he could protect Sophie.""

"From what?""

"From being left with nothing.""

I closed my eyes.

"Victoria, what exactly did Michael promise you?""

"That Daniel would eventually take control of the partnership. That once the money was transferred, we could start over somewhere else.""

My chest tightened.

"And what did you promise him?""

"I didn't promise him anything.""

"Then why did he pay you fifty thousand dollars?""

She began crying.

I said nothing.

Finally, she whispered:

"He wanted me to keep Daniel away from you.""

I felt a chill.

"Why?""

"Because Daniel was getting nervous. He kept asking questions about the original trust.""

I looked at Margaret.

She had gone completely still.

Victoria continued.

"Michael said you were the only person who could stop the transfer. He told me that if you found out about the inheritance, everything would collapse.""

I swallowed.

"So you knew.""

"I knew there was money involved. I didn't know how much.""

"You knew I was his wife.""

"Yes.""

"You knew Daniel was using my identity.""

She began crying harder.

"Emily, I swear I didn't know about the forged signatures until recently.""

I didn't believe her.

But I wanted to know one thing.

"Why did you introduce yourself to me at the mall?""

She was quiet.

Then she answered.

"Because Daniel told me you already knew.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"He said you were planning to leave him. He said your marriage was already over.""

I closed my eyes.

"And you believed him?""

"Yes.""

"Why did you say 'finally'?""

Victoria hesitated.

Then she said:

"Because Michael had been telling me for months that I needed to meet you before the transfer.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"Why?""

"Because he wanted to know whether you'd sign.""

I ended the call.

Margaret sat down slowly.

"Emily...""

I looked at her.

"Michael was planning this.""

She nodded.

"And Daniel helped him.""

My phone buzzed again.

This time, the message came from Caroline.

We found the original authorization request. Michael's company submitted it using a document that appears to have been signed by your father shortly before his death.

I read it twice.

Then another message appeared.

The signature has been challenged by the handwriting examiner.

I stared at the screen.

A third message followed.

Emily, we have reason to believe the person who witnessed that document was Daniel Bennett.

My knees weakened.

Daniel had been there.

Not just after my father's death.

Before it.

I looked at Margaret.

"Where is Daniel now?""

She reached for her phone.

"I'll find out.""

But before she could call, Richard's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his face changed.

"What do you mean he's coming back?""

May you like

He looked at me.

"Michael is in Chicago.""
