Chapter 7: The Secret My Father Took to His Grave

Vanessa arrived twenty minutes later.

Not running.

Not panicked.

Not looking like someone who had just been exposed.

She walked through the front door of my house like she still owned it.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not her expensive coat.

Not the confident expression on her face.

The fact that she still believed she had power here.

Nathan stood near the living room window, silent.

Rachel stood beside me.

And I realized something.

For the first time in twelve years, Vanessa was surrounded by people who were no longer afraid of her.

She noticed.

Her smile disappeared.

“So,” she said slowly, looking at me.

“You finally started asking questions.””

I crossed my arms.

“Where is my money?””

She laughed.

Not nervously.

Not nervously at all.

Almost like she expected this moment.

“You think this is about money?””

I stared at her.

“Isn’t it?””

Vanessa walked farther into the room.

“Your entire life, you’ve been so focused on what people took from you that you never wondered what they were protecting you from.””

I felt anger rise.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Pretend you did me a favor.””

Her expression changed slightly.

“You really think you know everything now?””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“But I know enough.””

She glanced at Nathan.

“Did you tell her?””

Nathan didn’t answer.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Of course not.””

My stomach tightened.

“What didn’t he tell me?””

She smiled.

And for the first time, I understood something.

Vanessa wasn’t scared.

She was waiting.

Waiting for the right moment to reveal something.

“You want the truth about your father?””

I went still.

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“Fine.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“Emily, be careful.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Still protecting her?””

Rachel didn’t blink.

“Always.””

Something flashed in Vanessa’s eyes.

Jealousy.

Not anger.

Jealousy.

Then she turned back to me.

“Your father wasn’t the man you thought he was.””

My jaw tightened.

“You didn’t know my father.””

“Oh, I knew him better than you did.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa walked toward the fireplace.

“He was a smart man.””

I waited.

“Too smart.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No,” she said.

“It’s a warning.””

I hated that part of me still wanted answers from her.

Because despite everything she had done, she was holding a piece of my life I didn’t understand.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa looked at Nathan.

Then back at me.

“Your father built his company with someone else.””

I frowned.

“Everyone knows that.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Everyone knows the story he told.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What story?””

“That he started from nothing.””

I said nothing.

“That he created everything himself.””

She stepped closer.

“But there was someone else.””

“Who?””

Vanessa paused.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

“My mother died when I was young.””

“I know.””

“Then how would you know?””

Vanessa’s face became serious.

“Because your father spent years hiding what happened.””

I looked at Nathan.

He avoided my eyes.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because he knew.

“You knew about this.””

Nathan’s voice was quiet.

“Emily—”

“You knew.””

“I knew there were things.””

“What things?””

He looked away.

I laughed softly.

“Of course.””

Rachel touched my arm.

“Emily.””

But I couldn’t stop.

“How long have you known my life was a lie?””

Nathan’s face tightened.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I looked around the room.

“Everyone says they were protecting me.””

My voice cracked.

“But nobody ever thought I deserved the truth.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Vanessa opened her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I didn’t come here to argue.””

I stared at it.

“What is that?””

“Something your father left.””

I didn’t move.

“Why do you have it?””

Her expression hardened.

“Because he trusted the wrong people.””

She handed it to me.

I hesitated.

Then took it.

The envelope was old.

The paper was yellowed.

My name was written on the front.

Not typed.

Written.

My father’s handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

“He wrote that for me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“For you.””

“Then why didn’t I get it?””

Her silence answered before her words did.

“Because I intercepted it.””

The honesty shocked me.

“You’re admitting that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because if you read it when you were supposed to, everything would have fallen apart.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

I recognized my father’s handwriting immediately.

My eyes filled before I even read the first sentence.

*My dear Emily,*

I had to stop.

My father.

The man who used to sing while cooking breakfast.

The man who always tucked a blanket around me when I fell asleep on the couch.

The man who promised he would always tell me the truth.

I continued.

*If you are reading this, then something has happened that I feared.*

My breathing became shallow.

*There are people around you who will tell you they love you. Some of them will. Some of them will only love what you represent.*

I looked up.

Nathan looked away.

I kept reading.

*The greatest mistake I made was believing I could fix my past by controlling your future.*

My eyebrows pulled together.

What did that mean?

*You deserve to know about Claire.*

I stopped.

My eyes lifted.

Claire.

My secret sister.

*I separated you because I believed I was protecting both of you.*

My heart raced.

*But I was wrong.*

The room disappeared around me.

My father knew.

He knew about Claire.

He knew everything.

*The company was never just mine. It belonged to your mother and me. When she died, I promised I would protect her share for our children.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“Your children?””

She didn’t respond.

I continued reading.

*Emily, if Claire ever finds you, listen to her. She knows the truth I was too afraid to tell.*

My hands trembled.

Then I reached the final part.

The part that made my blood run cold.

*Nathan Whitmore’s family will come for what belongs to you. They already tried once.*

I stopped.

I looked at Nathan.

His face had gone pale.

“No.””

The word came from him.

Quiet.

Almost broken.

I looked back at the letter.

*Nathan was not the first person they sent.*

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

I pulled the letter away.

“No.””

Her calm expression cracked.

For the first time, I saw panic.

“Emily.””

“No.””

I looked at Nathan.

“Who was the first person?””

Nobody spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Emily…”

I turned.

She was looking at the letter.

At the handwriting.

At the date.

Her face had changed.

“What?””

She pointed.

“Look at the date.””

I did.

And my stomach dropped.

The letter had been written fourteen years ago.

Before I met Nathan.

Before I married him.

Before I even knew the Whitmore family existed.

But that wasn’t the shocking part.

The shocking part was the name written beneath my father’s signature.

A name I recognized.

A name that should have been impossible.

Because underneath the words:

*The person who betrayed me was someone I trusted most.*

My father had written:

*Rachel.*

I looked at my sister.

She turned completely white.

May you like

And for the first time since everything began…

Rachel looked afraid.
