Chapter 6: The Woman Who Stole My Name

For a few seconds, I forgot how to speak.

The attorney’s words kept repeating in my head.

*Vanessa Whitmore was managing your father’s trust.*

No.

That couldn’t be right.

Vanessa was the woman who criticized my cooking.

The woman who complained when I bought new furniture.

The woman who looked at me like I was an inconvenience at every family gathering.

She was supposed to be nothing more than a cruel sister-in-law.

Not someone who had access to my father’s legacy.

“Emily?”” the attorney asked.

I forced myself to answer.

“Yes.””

“Are you still there?””

“Yes.””

My voice sounded distant.

“I need you to explain.””

The man sighed.

“I was hoping you would never have to find out this way.””

“Find out what?””

There was a pause.

Then he said:

“That someone altered your father’s estate documents.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who?””

“I can’t make accusations without evidence.””

“But you know.””

Another pause.

“I know what the records show.””

“Tell me.””

The sound of papers moving came through the phone.

“When your father passed away, the trust required your signature after you turned twenty-five. You were the beneficiary and the person who would eventually assume control.””

I closed my eyes.

I remembered turning twenty-five.

I remembered Nathan being there.

I remembered how supportive he seemed.

“You’re saying Vanessa signed for me?””

“I’m saying a document was submitted with your signature.””

“But it wasn’t mine.””

“No.””

The certainty in his voice made my stomach drop.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

I looked toward the hallway.

My children were asleep.

Safe.

At least for tonight.

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

The attorney was quiet.

Finally, he answered.

“Because the person handling communication with the trust told us you didn’t want involvement.””

My heart stopped.

“Who told you that?””

“I’m not comfortable saying over the phone.””

“Why?””

“Because Emily, after what I’ve seen, I’m not sure who is listening.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Are you saying Nathan could be listening?””

“I’m saying you need to be careful.””

I swallowed.

“What happened to my father’s company?””

Another silence.

Then:

“It was sold.””

My body went numb.

“What?””

“Three years ago.””

“Three years ago?””

“Yes.””

I stared at the wall.

Three years ago.

That was when Oliver was three.

That was when I was working constantly.

That was when Nathan told me we were having financial difficulties.

I remembered.

He had sat across from me at the kitchen table.

His head in his hands.

“We need to cut back,” he said.

“We’re struggling.””

I had believed him.

I had canceled vacations.

I stopped buying things for myself.

I picked up extra work.

While somewhere else…

My husband’s family was selling something that belonged to me.

“Where did the money go?”” I whispered.

The attorney didn’t answer immediately.

And that scared me more than anything.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Emily, I need you to come into my office.””

“Why?””

“Because there are things I can only show you in person.””

“When?””

“As soon as possible.””

I looked down at my phone.

Then at the children’s bedroom door.

“Tomorrow.””

“Good.””

Before he hung up, he said one more thing.

“Emily?””

“Yes?””

“Bring someone you trust.””

I thought about Rachel.

Then Daniel.

Then Claire.

And I realized something terrifying.

For twelve years, I had been surrounded by people.

But almost none of them were actually on my side.

“I will.””

The next morning, Rachel noticed something was different.

She didn’t ask immediately.

She waited until the children left for school.

Then she placed a cup of coffee in front of me.

“You look like you didn’t sleep.””

“I didn’t.””

“What happened?””

I pushed the documents across the table.

Rachel read the first page.

Then the second.

Her expression changed slowly.

“No.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked up.

“Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“She stole your inheritance?””

“I don’t know everything yet.””

Rachel stood up and started pacing.

“This is insane.””

“I know.””

“No, Emily. This is beyond family drama.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“This is fraud.””

The word felt heavy.

Fraud.

Not a disagreement.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not a family conflict.

A crime.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message from Nathan.

*We need to talk today.*

I ignored it.

Another message appeared.

*Please. For the kids.*

I stared at those words.

For the kids.

He always knew which words would make me hesitate.

I showed Rachel.

She shook her head.

“Don’t meet him alone.””

“I wasn’t planning to.””

“Good.””

A few minutes later, another message came.

This time, from Vanessa.

*You have no idea what you’re doing. Stop before you ruin everyone’s lives.*

I stared at it.

Then I typed one response.

*You should have thought about that before you touched what belonged to me.*

I pressed send.

My hands shook.

Not because I was scared.

Because I realized something.

I had finally stopped apologizing.

Nathan was waiting outside my old house.

Our house.

The house I had left.

The house where I spent years trying to create a happy family.

When I arrived with Rachel, he looked surprised.

“You brought her?””

“Yes.””

He frowned.

“This is between us.””

I stepped out of the car.

“No.””

His expression changed.

“It’s not.””

He looked at me carefully.

“What happened to you?””

The question almost made me laugh.

“What do you mean?””

“You’re different.””

I looked at the front door.

The door I had walked through thousands of times.

“The old me believed you.””

Nathan’s face tightened.

“Emily.””

“No.””

My voice stayed calm.

“I need answers.””

He glanced at Rachel.

Then back at me.

“About what?””

“Your family.””

His jaw clenched.

That tiny reaction told me everything.

“You talked to Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“And Claire.””

“Yes.””

He looked away.

“Of course.””

I studied him.

“You’re not surprised.””

Nathan was silent.

“You knew.””

“I knew they would try to manipulate you.””

I almost smiled.

“Funny.””

“What?””

“Everyone says the same thing.””

He looked confused.

“What?””

“That Daniel manipulated me. Claire manipulated me. Everyone except you.””

Nathan stepped closer.

“Emily, you’re listening to people who want to destroy our family.””

“Our family?””

“Yes.””

I pointed toward the house.

“You mean the family where your sister hit me?””

He looked away.

I continued.

“The family where your mother watched?””

“Emily—”

“No.””

I took a breath.

“Tell me the truth.””

Nathan’s expression changed.

“What truth?””

“Why did you marry me?””

The question landed harder than I expected.

He froze.

For a second.

Just a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

“You know why.””

“Do I?””

“Yes.””

“Then say it.””

He didn’t.

The silence between us became unbearable.

Finally, he said:

“Because I loved you.””

I looked at him.

And for the first time, I didn’t believe him.

“No.””

His face hardened.

“Excuse me?””

“You loved what I could give you.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then why did your family know about my father’s trust before I did?””

Nathan went still.

Rachel noticed.

I noticed.

He didn’t deny it.

“You found out.””

Those three words destroyed whatever hope remained.

I whispered:

“You knew.””

Nathan looked down.

Then back at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He ran a hand through his hair.

“Things were complicated.””

“Complicated?””

“Yes.””

“You married me because of money.””

“No.””

“Then why?””

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw the man underneath.

Not the charming husband.

Not the patient father.

The desperate man who had spent years hiding something.

“I was trying to fix everything.””

“What everything?””

“My family.””

I laughed quietly.

“And I was just the solution?””

His silence answered.

I stepped back.

“You let me love you.””

Nathan’s eyes softened.

“Emily—”

“You let me build a life with you.””

“I did love you.””

“But you lied.””

He didn’t respond.

Because he knew.

I turned to leave.

Then Nathan said something that made me stop.

“Emily.””

I looked back.

His voice was low.

“If you keep digging…”

He swallowed.

“If you find out everything, you won’t just hate me.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He looked toward the house.

Toward the place where we raised our children.

Then he whispered:

“You’ll hate the person who started this.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

Nathan looked at me.

And the fear in his eyes was real.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father died.””

“I know.””

“Then what are you talking about?””

Nathan stepped closer.

“Emily, the reason Vanessa found your trust…”

He stopped.

“Was because your father left something behind that he never told you about.””

My heart pounded.

“What?””

Nathan looked away.

“A secret.””

I waited.

But he said nothing else.

Because at that moment, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And his face changed completely.

“What?””

I watched him answer.

A few seconds later, his expression turned pale.

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“No. Don’t let her leave.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who is it?””

Nathan looked at me.

And for the first time since I had known him, he looked terrified.

“It’s Vanessa.””

I stepped closer.

“What happened?””

He lowered the phone slowly.

“She found out you went to the attorney.””

I waited.

Then he said the words that made my entire body go cold.

“She’s not running away.””

May you like

“She’s coming here.””

“And she’s bringing proof that your father betrayed you.””
