Chapter 9: The Father Who Was Never Dead

Marcus didn't speak for several seconds.

His father had supposedly died twenty years earlier.

Now he was calling from an unknown number, asking for documents hidden in a storage locker.

I watched Marcus grip the phone.

"Where are you?"" he asked.

The man laughed.

"Still asking the wrong questions.""

"Are you alive?""

"Obviously.""

"Why did you let us believe you were dead?""

A long pause followed.

Then the man answered.

"Because some truths are easier to bury than people.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"What do you want?""

"The trust agreement.""

Marcus looked at the document in his hand.

"Why?""

"Because your mother made a mistake.""

"My mother?""

"She trusted Elizabeth to protect the family. Elizabeth trusted the wrong people. And now you're repeating their mistakes.""

Marcus's voice became sharper.

"Tell me where you are.""

"Come to the old estate.""

The call ended.

Marcus stared at the phone.

Daniel looked at him.

"Are you going?""

Marcus nodded.

I stepped forward.

"You're not going alone.""

He looked at me.

"Why would you come?""

"Because I need answers, too.""

He studied me for a long moment.

Then he said:

"Fine. But understand something, Vanessa. Whatever happens today, you don't get to lie your way out of it.""

The old Hale estate stood outside the city.

It had been abandoned for nearly fifteen years.

Tall trees surrounded the property. The iron gates were rusted, and weeds covered the driveway.

Marcus parked beside the entrance.

Nobody moved.

Then a light appeared in one of the upstairs windows.

"Someone's there," Daniel whispered.

Marcus opened the gate.

We walked toward the house.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, the air smelled of dust and old wood.

A lamp was burning in the living room.

And beside the fireplace sat an elderly man.

His hair was white.

His shoulders were thinner than Marcus remembered.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

Robert Hale.

Marcus stopped.

"Father.""

The old man stood.

"Hello, Marcus.""

Marcus took a step forward.

"You let me bury an empty coffin.""

Robert looked at him.

"I had my reasons.""

"You let me tell my son his grandfather was dead.""

"I was trying to protect him.""

"From what?""

Robert glanced at me.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"From people like the ones standing in this room.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

Marcus stepped closer.

"Explain.""

Robert sighed.

"Elizabeth discovered the foundation thefts. She also discovered that Peter was working with someone outside the company.""

"Who?""

Robert looked at me.

"Vanessa's father.""

I froze.

"My father?""

Robert nodded.

"He had been helping Peter move money through several companies. When Elizabeth discovered it, she asked me to help her.""

I shook my head.

"My father was trying to expose Peter.""

"Eventually," Robert said.

"But not at first.""

Marcus looked confused.

"What are you talking about?""

Robert walked toward the fireplace.

"Your father-in-law was involved in the original thefts. He helped Peter create false invoices and move money into private accounts. When he realized how much Peter had stolen, he became frightened.""

I stared at him.

"That's not true.""

Robert looked at me.

"Your father was a complicated man, Vanessa. He loved you. But he made terrible decisions.""

I shook my head.

"Why would he help Peter?""

"Because Peter promised him a share of the foundation's money.""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Robert continued.

"When Elizabeth began investigating, your father changed sides. He offered to help her gather evidence.""

Marcus stared at him.

"And you?""

"I helped them.""

"Then why did you disappear?""

Robert looked toward the window.

"Because Peter found out.""

He explained that Peter had discovered the investigation and arranged a meeting with Robert.

During that meeting, Peter threatened to expose several financial transactions that would implicate Marcus.

Robert had panicked.

He had agreed to disappear in exchange for Peter leaving the family alone.

"Why didn't you tell me?"" Marcus asked.

"Because I thought I could solve it.""

"Twenty years?""

Robert lowered his head.

"I know.""

Marcus walked away.

He looked like a man trying to recognize his own childhood.

Then Robert turned toward me.

"Vanessa, I need to ask you something.""

I didn't answer.

"Did you keep the original insurance document?""

"No.""

"Did you destroy it?""

I nodded.

Robert sighed.

"That was a mistake.""

"Why?""

"Because it wasn't the only copy.""

He walked to a cabinet and removed a thick envelope.

Inside was a copy of Elizabeth's original insurance policy.

The beneficiary was Ethan.

But there was another document attached.

A handwritten amendment.

It stated that the trust would remain protected even if the primary trustee became incapacitated, died, or was accused of financial misconduct.

The replacement trustee would be Robert Hale.

Marcus stared.

"That's why you stayed alive.""

Robert nodded.

"Elizabeth knew Peter might try to take control of the trust. She wanted someone outside the company to protect Ethan.""

I looked at the document.

Then I noticed something.

The amendment had been signed four days before Elizabeth's death.

And there was a second witness.

Daniel Cole.

My brother looked shocked.

"I signed that?""

Robert nodded.

"Elizabeth asked you to witness it.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't remember.""

"You were frightened. You thought Peter was watching you.""

Marcus turned toward me.

"Why didn't you tell me about this?""

I laughed bitterly.

"Because I didn't know.""

Robert looked at me.

"That's not entirely true.""

I froze.

"What?""

He removed another document.

It was a copy of a letter.

My father's handwriting.

*Vanessa has seen the trust agreement. She understands that Ethan is the beneficiary. She has agreed not to interfere.*

I stared at it.

"I never saw this.""

Robert studied me.

"Your father told me you did.""

I shook my head.

"He lied.""

Robert nodded slowly.

"Perhaps.""

Marcus looked between us.

"Why would he write that?""

Robert didn't answer.

Instead, he walked toward a desk.

He opened a drawer and removed a small recorder.

"This is the last recording Elizabeth made before she died.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"Play it.""

Robert pressed the button.

Elizabeth's voice filled the room.

"Robert, I think Peter knows about the trust. He's been asking questions about Ethan's inheritance.""

A pause.

Then she continued.

"I also think Vanessa is in danger. She's made some terrible mistakes, but I don't believe she understands what Peter is planning.""

I looked down.

Elizabeth's voice became quieter.

"If something happens to me, please tell Marcus that the money was never the reason I was fighting.""

Robert stopped the recording.

Marcus looked at him.

"What did she mean?""

Robert pressed play again.

Elizabeth continued.

"I was fighting because Peter knows something about Marcus's past. Something that could destroy him.""

The recording ended.

Marcus went pale.

"What past?""

Robert looked at his son.

"Your first business.""

Marcus shook his head.

"What about it?""

"Peter didn't steal the original company funds.""

Marcus stared.

Robert continued.

"You gave him access.""

"That's impossible.""

"You authorized the first transfers. You asked Peter to move the money because you wanted to hide the company's losses from the investors.""

Marcus stepped backward.

"That was twenty years ago.""

"Yes.""

"You told me everything was settled.""

"Because I thought it was.""

Marcus looked at the documents.

Then he turned toward me.

For the first time, I saw something different in his eyes.

Not anger.

Fear.

"Vanessa," he said quietly.

I looked at him.

"What?""

"Do you remember the documents you found in my study last Tuesday?""

I nodded.

He continued.

"Did you take anything?""

I hesitated.

"Yes.""

"What?""

I swallowed.

"A folder.""

"What folder?""

"The original company accounts.""

Marcus's face tightened.

"Why?""

I looked at Robert.

Then at Daniel.

Finally, I answered.

"Because Peter asked me to.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"What did he want?""

"He said there was evidence in the folder that could send you to prison.""

Robert sat down.

Marcus looked at me.

"Where is it now?""

I shook my head.

"I gave it to Peter.""

The room went silent.

Then Robert's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed almost immediately.

"Where?""

He listened.

Then he looked at Marcus.

"Peter is at the police station.""

Marcus frowned.

"Why?""

Robert slowly lowered the phone.

"Because he has just confessed to Elizabeth's murder.""

I felt the room tilt.

Marcus looked stunned.

"Then it's over.""

Robert shook his head.

"No.""

"Why not?""

"Because Peter has named the person who helped him.""

Marcus stared.

Robert looked directly at me.

"And according to his statement, that person is Vanessa.""

I opened my mouth.

But before I could speak, the front door burst open.

Two police officers entered.

Detective Miller stood behind them.

"Vanessa Cole," he said.

"You're under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, financial fraud, and destruction of evidence.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Wait!""

Detective Miller raised a hand.

"Mr. Hale, please stand aside.""

I looked at Marcus.

He looked at me.

For one second, I thought he might defend me.

Instead, he asked:

"Vanessa, did you know Peter was going to kill Elizabeth?""

I couldn't answer.

Because I had known Peter was planning something.

I had known Elizabeth was in danger.

And I had done nothing.

The officers took my arms.

As they led me toward the door, I heard Robert speak.

"Detective Miller, you should check the evidence Peter submitted.""

Miller turned.

"Why?""

Robert opened the envelope.

"Because Peter isn't the only person who has been lying.""

He removed a photograph.

It showed Detective Miller standing beside Peter outside the foundation office six years earlier.

And on the back was a handwritten note.

*The officer who protected the killer was paid $250,000.*
