Chapter 5: The Recording My Husband Never Wanted Found

The photograph remained on the table.

Marcus stood beside Elizabeth outside a restaurant.

His hand was resting on her shoulder.

He looked calm.

Elizabeth looked frightened.

I studied the timestamp.

7:42 PM.

The accident had happened at 9:18 PM.

"Where did you get this?"" I asked.

Detective Shaw didn't answer immediately.

"It came from a private security archive connected to the restaurant.""

"Why wasn't it included in the original investigation?""

"Because the original investigation didn't identify Mr. Hale as someone who had met Elizabeth that evening.""

I stared at the photograph.

"Did Marcus tell you he was there?""

"No.""

I laughed softly.

"Interesting.""

Detective Shaw watched me.

"Do you know what they discussed?""

"No.""

"Do you believe your husband knew Elizabeth was in danger?""

I looked at the picture again.

"I believe my husband knows more than he's admitting.""

The detective closed the folder.

"That's why we're going to ask him.""

Marcus was waiting outside the interview room.

He looked at the photograph in Detective Miller's hand.

For the first time that night, I saw genuine fear cross his face.

"Where did you get that?""

"Restaurant security footage," Detective Miller answered.

Marcus took a step closer.

"That footage shouldn't exist.""

Detective Shaw raised an eyebrow.

"Why not?""

"The restaurant closed years ago. Its security system was removed.""

"Apparently, some of the recordings were archived.""

Marcus looked at me.

I gave him a small smile.

Not because I was happy.

Because I finally had something he couldn't explain away.

"You told me you weren't there that night," I said.

Marcus didn't respond.

"Six years ago, you told me you were in Boston.""

"I was.""

"Then why were you standing beside Elizabeth?""

He looked at the detectives.

"Can we speak privately?""

Detective Miller shook his head.

"We need everyone present.""

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"Fine.""

He sat down.

"Elizabeth and I had dinner that evening.""

"Why?"" I asked.

"Because she wanted to discuss the foundation.""

"What about it?""

"She believed money was missing.""

I leaned forward.

"And you didn't tell the police?""

"I didn't know she was going to die.""

"Did you know about the missing money?""

Marcus looked at me.

"Yes.""

My stomach tightened.

"How much?""

"More than you admitted.""

"How much?""

"Nearly seven hundred thousand dollars.""

I stared at him.

He continued.

"Elizabeth had found irregular transfers. She suspected someone was using the foundation's accounts to pay personal expenses.""

"Did she suspect me?""

"Yes.""

"Did she suspect Daniel?""

"Yes.""

I leaned back.

"Then why did you meet her?""

Marcus looked down at his hands.

"She wanted me to sign a document.""

"What document?""

"A statement confirming that I had authorized the transfers.""

I blinked.

"Why would you do that?""

"Because I had authorized some of them.""

The room went silent.

Detective Miller looked up.

Marcus continued.

"The foundation was struggling. I had moved money between accounts to cover operating expenses. Elizabeth believed I was hiding financial losses from the board.""

I laughed.

"So you were hiding money, too.""

"Not for personal use.""

"That's what they all say.""

Marcus ignored me.

"Elizabeth wanted the transfers documented. She said if I refused, she'd report the entire situation to the board.""

Detective Shaw leaned forward.

"Did you argue?""

"Yes.""

"Did she threaten you?""

"No.""

"Did you threaten her?""

Marcus looked directly at the detective.

"Never.""

I watched him carefully.

He was telling the truth about some things.

But not everything.

"Then why did you leave the restaurant without her?"" I asked.

Marcus turned toward me.

"Because I was angry.""

"How angry?""

"Angry enough to walk away.""

"And leave her alone?""

He didn't answer.

Detective Miller placed another photograph on the table.

This one showed Marcus's car leaving the restaurant parking lot at 8:03 PM.

The camera captured the license plate.

Marcus looked at it.

"I drove home.""

"Did you stop anywhere?""

"No.""

"Did you speak with anyone?""

"No.""

Detective Shaw opened another page.

"We found a phone call from your number to Daniel Cole at 8:26 PM.""

Marcus's expression changed.

I stared at him.

"What?""

He looked at the detectives.

"That call was about the car.""

"What car?"" Detective Miller asked.

"Elizabeth's.""

My heart began pounding.

Marcus continued.

"Daniel called me earlier. He said there was a problem with the brakes. I told him to repair them.""

"Did you know the brakes had been deliberately damaged?""

Marcus shook his head.

"No.""

I watched him.

Then I remembered Daniel's message.

*Your husband paid for it.*

I leaned forward.

"Why did you pay for the repair?""

"Because it was a family vehicle.""

"Did you ask Daniel to delay the repair?""

"No.""

"Did you tell him not to mention the damage to Elizabeth?""

Marcus looked at me.

"Absolutely not.""

I smiled faintly.

"Then why did Daniel say you knew?""

Marcus's face hardened.

"Because Daniel is trying to protect himself.""

Detective Miller wrote something down.

"Mr. Hale, we need access to your phone records and financial accounts.""

"Of course.""

He stood.

Then he looked at me.

"Vanessa, I think we're finished.""

I laughed.

"Are we?""

He paused.

I reached into my purse and removed my phone.

"I received a message from Daniel tonight.""

Marcus looked at me.

"What message?""

I opened it.

*Your husband paid for it.*

I turned the screen toward him.

His expression changed.

"Where did you get that?""

"From Daniel.""

Marcus shook his head.

"He's lying.""

"Maybe.""

I stepped closer.

"But there's something else.""

I opened the message thread.

Daniel had sent a photograph.

It showed a bank transfer from Marcus's private account to a company owned by Daniel.

The date was the day before Elizabeth's accident.

The amount was $75,000.

Marcus stared at it.

"That's not what it looks like.""

I raised an eyebrow.

"Then tell us what it looks like.""

He turned toward the detectives.

"That payment was for a different vehicle.""

"Which vehicle?"" Detective Shaw asked.

Marcus hesitated.

"A company vehicle.""

"Do you have documentation?""

"Yes.""

"Can you provide it?""

"Tomorrow.""

Detective Miller nodded.

"We'll need it.""

Marcus looked at me again.

His voice was low.

"You're enjoying this.""

I shook my head.

"No, darling. I'm learning.""

He looked away.

At 5:40 AM, I was released pending further investigation.

Marcus didn't come to collect me.

Instead, a taxi took me to a hotel downtown.

I booked a room under my maiden name.

I had barely closed the door when my phone rang.

It was my brother.

"Where are you?"" Daniel asked.

"Why?""

"Because you need to listen to me.""

"You're the one who betrayed me.""

"I know.""

"Do you?""

"Vanessa, I didn't tell them everything.""

I froze.

"What do you mean?""

"There's something I didn't mention.""

I sat on the edge of the bed.

"Tell me.""

Daniel took a breath.

"That night, I wasn't the last person to work on Elizabeth's car.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who was?""

"I don't know his name.""

"Then how do you know?""

"Because I saw him.""

"Where?""

"At the garage.""

I stood.

"Daniel, stop playing games.""

"I'm not. I went back to get the tools. Someone was already working on the car.""

"Who?""

"A man in a gray jacket.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you see his face?""

"Yes.""

"Who was it?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

"It was Peter.""

I stared at the wall.

Peter Lang.

Marcus's personal assistant.

The man who had worked for the family for fifteen years.

The man who had been responsible for managing the household accounts, the family vehicles, and Elizabeth's appointments.

The man who had introduced me to Marcus.

"Are you sure?"" I whispered.

"I recognized him.""

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

"Because he called me afterward.""

"What did he say?""

Daniel's voice cracked.

"He told me if I ever mentioned his name, he'd make sure I went to prison alone.""

I gripped the phone.

"Did you record that call?""

"No.""

"Do you have anything?""

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

"There's a copy of the original garage footage.""

My heart began racing.

"Where?""

"In the old foundation office.""

"Why didn't you tell me before?""

"Because I thought it was gone.""

"Who has it?""

"I don't know.""

I walked toward the window.

The city was beginning to wake.

Cars moved through the streets below. A delivery truck stopped outside the hotel.

Everything looked ordinary.

But my life was falling apart.

"Daniel," I whispered, "listen carefully. We need that footage.""

"I know.""

"Can you get it?""

"I'll try.""

He paused.

Then his voice became quieter.

"Vanessa, there's something else.""

"What?""

"Peter wasn't working alone.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Who was with him?""

Daniel exhaled.

"Someone from the police department.""

I stopped breathing.

"Who?""

"I don't know his name. But I remember the badge.""

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel said:

"It belonged to Detective Miller.""

At 7:12 AM, someone knocked on my hotel room door.

I froze.

Nobody knew I was there.

I approached the door slowly and looked through the peephole.

Marcus stood outside.

His face was pale.

He held a thick brown envelope.

I opened the door.

"What are you doing here?""

He stepped inside without answering.

I moved aside.

He placed the envelope on the table.

"Before you say anything, I need you to look at this.""

I stared at it.

"What is it?""

"Something I found in my study.""

I didn't touch it.

Marcus opened the envelope.

Inside were photographs, bank statements, and several pages of handwritten notes.

At the top of the first page was a name.

Peter Lang.

Marcus looked at me.

"He's been stealing from the foundation for years.""

I frowned.

"How do you know?""

"Because I found the original account records.""

He placed another page in front of me.

It showed transfers totaling more than $2 million.

The money had passed through several shell companies.

One of them belonged to Daniel.

Another belonged to a company registered under my maiden name.

I stared at the page.

"Why are you showing me this?""

"Because I think Peter was responsible for Elizabeth's death.""

I looked at him.

"Daniel says Peter was at the garage.""

Marcus nodded slowly.

"I know.""

My stomach dropped.

"How?""

He pulled out his phone.

Then he played a recording.

Peter's voice filled the room.

"Mr. Hale, I handled the vehicle situation exactly as you requested.""

Marcus's recorded voice answered.

"Good. Nobody needs to know about this.""

The recording ended.

I looked at Marcus.

He was staring at the floor.

"Where did you get that?""

"From a backup drive.""

"Why do you have it?""

"Because Peter has been blackmailing me.""

I stepped backward.

"What?""

Marcus looked up.

"He told me that if I ever questioned the missing money, he would release something that could destroy my family.""

I stared at him.

"Your family?""

He nodded.

Then he opened the envelope again.

At the bottom was a final document.

A handwritten note.

The handwriting was not Peter's.

It was Elizabeth's.

Marcus pushed it toward me.

"I found this hidden inside the old foundation records.""

I read the first line.

And my blood turned to ice.

*Marcus, if you're reading this, Peter has already told you that I was planning to leave. Don't believe him. I wasn't leaving you. I was leaving someone else.*

I looked up.

Marcus's eyes were fixed on mine.

He whispered:

"Vanessa, Elizabeth wasn't investigating the foundation alone.""

I swallowed.

"Who was helping her?""

Marcus turned the page.

There was a name written beneath the final sentence.

A name I hadn't seen in six years.

My own.

But beneath it, Elizabeth had added five words.

*She was never working for me.*

And suddenly, I understood.

Elizabeth hadn't hired me to help manage the foundation.

She had hired me to expose the person who was stealing from it.

Someone who had been inside Marcus's house long before I ever became his wife.

Someone who knew every secret.

Someone who had been standing beside us throughout the entire investigation.

Peter Lang.

May you like

But the next line of Elizabeth's letter revealed something even worse.

*And Marcus knows exactly why she agreed to do it.*
