Chapter 8: The Plan He Made for Me

Marcus was taken into custody that night.

Vanessa was questioned separately.

The police recovered the documents, the briefcase, and several electronic devices from the storage unit.

But the photograph disturbed me more than anything else.

I had never seen the hospital room.

I had never worn the hospital gown.

And I had certainly never agreed to the procedure described in the document.

The next morning, Rebecca arrived at the police station with an update.

“Lauren, we've identified the clinic.””

I sat across from her.

“What did they find?””

“The facility is a private medical center outside Chicago. Your husband made several payments to a consultant there.””

“Was I scheduled to be admitted?””

Rebecca nodded.

“According to the records, yes.””

Emily grabbed my hand.

“What kind of procedure?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“A medical evaluation involving sedation. The paperwork falsely indicates that you consented to it.””

My stomach tightened.

“Could they have performed it without my knowledge?””

“The clinic is cooperating with investigators. They have confirmed that the appointment was never medically justified.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Who took this?””

Rebecca turned the page.

“The image is from a stock medical photograph. It was edited to resemble you.””

I exhaled.

For a moment, I had imagined Marcus arranging to have me admitted somewhere against my will.

Rebecca continued.

“But there is another issue. The insurance company received an application for an accelerated benefit review. The supporting documents included the fabricated medical assessment.””

“Did they approve it?””

“No. They flagged inconsistencies.””

“Thank God.””

Rebecca looked at me carefully.

“Lauren, this is important. Your husband may have committed several serious offenses, but we need to distinguish what he attempted from what he actually accomplished. We have evidence of forged records and unauthorized financial transactions. We are still investigating the insurance claim.””

I nodded.

I wanted justice.

But I wanted the truth even more.

Daniel arrived later that afternoon.

He looked exhausted.

“Vanessa wants to talk to you.””

I didn't answer immediately.

“Why?””

“She says she has information about Marcus.””

“Does she want forgiveness?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't think she expects that.””

I agreed to meet her.

Vanessa was sitting in a small interview room.

Without the expensive dress, diamonds, and perfect makeup, she looked different.

Smaller.

She stood when I entered.

“Lauren.””

I remained by the door.

“Say what you need to say.””

She sat again.

“Marcus told me you were mentally unstable.””

I said nothing.

“He said you had inherited money but didn't know how to manage it. He said your mother had been irresponsible and that he was trying to protect the family.””

“You believed him?””

“At first.””

“When did you stop?””

She looked down.

“When he told me about your mother's trust.””

I stared at her.

“What about it?””

“He said your mother had hidden money from him. He told me the trust was supposed to be ours once you were declared incapable.””

I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.

“Ours?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He said we would get married after everything was settled.””

I looked at her bracelet.

She wasn't wearing it anymore.

“Did he tell you he was married to me when you started seeing him?””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

I appreciated that she didn't lie.

“He told me you were separated in everything except paperwork.””

“And you believed that?””

She looked at me.

“I wanted to.””

I nodded slowly.

“At least that's honest.””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I didn't know about the fake medical records until recently. I swear.””

“But you knew about the money.””

“Yes.””

“You helped create the company that received it.””

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“And you wore the bracelet he bought with my money.””

She lowered her head.

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“Then don't sit there and tell me you were only a victim.””

She began crying.

“I know.””

I looked at her for a long moment.

“Why did you bring me into this?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she removed a folded piece of paper from her pocket.

It was a photograph of a woman in a hospital bed.

My mother.

“This was sent to me three weeks ago,” Vanessa said.

I took it.

“Who sent it?””

“Marcus.””

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

“He told me your mother was dead. He said the woman in the picture was someone who had been involved in his business.””

I looked up.

“Why would he send you this?””

“Because he wanted me to help him locate her.””

“Did you?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I found Westbrook through a medical billing record. I didn't know she was alive until I saw her.””

My heart began racing.

“Did you contact her?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She told me to leave Marcus.””

I stared at her.

“She also told me something about my own mother. She said Patricia was alive.””

Daniel, who was standing behind me, stiffened.

“Did she tell you where?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She said Room 214.””

I closed my eyes.

Everything was connected.

Marcus had discovered that my mother was alive.

He had used the secret to control Vanessa.

He had also used the information about Patricia to keep Daniel from asking too many questions.

But Vanessa had gone to Westbrook anyway.

“What happened when you visited?””

She swallowed.

“Your mother told me that Marcus was planning to disappear. She said he had already moved money and documents. She asked me to help stop him.””

“Why didn't you?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I stared at her.

“Of what?””

“Of losing everything. Of Marcus turning against me. Of being arrested.””

I let the silence sit between us.

Then I asked, “Did you know he was planning to have me declared incapable?””

She nodded.

“When?””

“Two months ago.””

I felt my stomach turn.

“And you said nothing.””

“I know.””

“Did you know about the insurance policy?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she whispered, “Yes.””

The room became very quiet.

I looked at her.

“What?””

“He told me it was only a financial safeguard. He said the policy would pay out if you became seriously ill.””

I stepped back.

“And you accepted that?””

“I didn't think he would hurt you.””

“You didn't think?””

My voice broke.

“You watched him steal from me. You watched him lie about my health. You watched him build a company using my inheritance. And you still sat at my anniversary dinner wearing my bracelet.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I know.””

I turned toward the door.

“Lauren,” she called.

I stopped.

“There's something else in the company records.””

I turned back.

“What?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Marcus has another account. One that doesn't belong to him or Lauren.””

Daniel frowned.

“Whose account?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“His father's.””

I stared.

Marcus had told me his father died when he was twenty.

Vanessa continued.

“His father left a substantial inheritance. Marcus told everyone he had lost it in a failed business. But he never did.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She immediately took out her notebook.

“How much?””

Vanessa answered.

“More than two million dollars.””

“Where is it?””

“Held through a trust in another country.””

Rebecca's expression hardened.

“Why didn't you mention this earlier?””

“Because Marcus told me the trust had been transferred to a charity.””

She looked at me.

“But that's not true.””

I felt another piece fall into place.

Marcus had spent years portraying himself as a successful businessman who had built everything through hard work.

He had also made me feel guilty whenever I questioned our finances.

But the truth was that he had access to money he never disclosed.

And he had been using my inheritance to maintain the lifestyle he wanted.

Rebecca stood.

“That's enough for today.””

As I reached the door, Vanessa spoke again.

“Lauren, I need you to know something.””

I turned.

She looked directly at me.

“The night Marcus brought me to your anniversary dinner, he told me he planned to announce your separation.””

My throat tightened.

“He said what?””

“He said he wanted everyone to know that your marriage was over. He wanted you to become angry in front of witnesses.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked down.

“So he could use your reaction as evidence that you were unstable.””

I felt cold.

The dinner hadn't been an act of cruelty alone.

It had been staged.

The woman in my chair.

The bracelet.

The insults.

He had wanted me to lose control.

He had wanted witnesses.

And I had almost given him exactly what he needed.

I left the interview room without another word.

Outside, Emily was waiting.

She hugged me.

“Are you okay?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Then I took a deep breath.

“But I'm going to be.””

That evening, Rebecca received a call from the financial investigator.

Marcus's offshore trust had been located.

And the documents revealed something extraordinary.

The trust had been established twenty years earlier.

Its original beneficiary was Marcus's father.

May you like

Its current beneficiary was not Marcus.

It was me.
