Chapter 7: My Mother's Last Secret

My mother told her story in the presence of two police officers, Rebecca, Emily, and Daniel.

She began with the year before her supposed death.

At the time, she had been living independently and managing her investments.

Marcus had started visiting her frequently.

He brought flowers.

He fixed small things around her house.

He offered to drive her to appointments.

At first, she had appreciated his attention.

Then he began asking questions.

“How much money is in the family trust?””

“Who has access to the investment accounts?””

“Have you considered making Lauren's husband a financial representative?””

My mother had refused.

She had also discovered that Marcus was using a company connected to her estate to purchase property without her approval.

When she confronted him, he became aggressive.

“He told me I was old and confused,” she said.

I looked down.

Those were almost the exact words he had used with me.

My mother continued.

“He said Lauren would eventually understand that he was protecting her interests. But I knew better.””

“What happened at the hospital?”” Emily asked.

My mother folded her hands.

“Marcus visited me two days before I was scheduled to undergo a procedure. He brought documents for me to sign. When I refused, he became angry.””

“What did he say?””

She closed her eyes.

“He said that if I continued interfering, I might not live long enough to regret it.””

I felt sick.

“Why didn't you report him?””

“I did. But I didn't have enough evidence. Richard helped me arrange a transfer to another facility. We wanted to expose the financial fraud without putting you girls in danger.””

Rebecca leaned forward.

“Did you have any direct contact with Marcus after that?””

“No. But I later learned that he had arranged a private memorial and circulated documents stating I had died.””

Emily wiped her face.

“Why didn't you come back?””

My mother looked at her.

“Because Marcus had already begun isolating Lauren. I believed that if I returned, he would use her against me.””

I felt tears running down my cheeks.

“He told me you died peacefully.””

“I know, sweetheart.””

“He said you didn't want us to see you in the hospital.””

My mother shook her head.

“I wanted to see you every day.””

She reached into her handbag and removed a small photograph.

It showed her sitting beside a window in a garden.

On the back was a date.

Two months after her supposed death.

“I kept these because I hoped one day I could show you that I never stopped being your mother.””

I pressed the photograph to my chest.

Then something occurred to me.

“Mom, the woman in Room 214. Who is she?””

My mother exchanged a look with Richard, who had just arrived.

Richard sat down.

“Room 214 was where your mother stayed during her final weeks at the rehabilitation residence.””

“But she's here now.””

“Yes. And she wasn't alone.””

He opened his briefcase.

“There's a patient named Patricia Cole.””

Daniel sat upright.

“Cole?””

My mother nodded.

“Vanessa's mother.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Patricia died twelve years ago.””

“No,” my mother answered gently.

“She didn't.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

“Patricia was admitted to Westbrook under a different name after suffering a serious medical crisis. Vanessa was told her mother had died because her father wanted to conceal the circumstances surrounding an inheritance dispute.””

Daniel slowly lowered himself into a chair.

“My wife's mother is alive?””

My mother nodded.

“She has been living under medical supervision. Marcus discovered her identity through an old financial record. He began using her existence to pressure Vanessa into cooperating with him.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Vanessa told me her mother died when she was seventeen.””

“That's what she was told.””

My mother reached into her folder.

“I have a letter Patricia wrote to Vanessa. She asked me to deliver it if I ever had the opportunity.””

Daniel took it.

His hands trembled.

He read the first few lines.

Then he stopped.

“Vanessa knew?””

My mother shook her head.

“I don't think she knew the truth until recently.””

Daniel looked toward me.

“Then why did she help Marcus?””

Nobody answered.

Rebecca spoke carefully.

“We'll need to investigate her role independently. Being manipulated doesn't automatically remove responsibility for financial misconduct.””

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.””

My mother leaned toward me.

“Lauren, I need you to be careful. Marcus is desperate.””

“I know.””

“No, sweetheart. You don't.””

She removed another document.

It was a copy of an insurance policy.

The same policy Samuel Brooks had discovered.

But this copy contained an additional page.

A handwritten note appeared at the bottom.

Beneficiary instructions: Review following guardianship approval.

I stared at it.

“Mom, what does this mean?””

Richard answered.

“Your husband planned to use the medical documentation to gain control over your legal and financial decisions. Once that happened, he intended to manage the insurance policy without your independent involvement.””

“Could he have collected the money if I became incapacitated?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“Not automatically. But he could have attempted to exploit the policy terms and the false medical documentation. We need the insurer's full records.””

My mother took my hand.

“That's why I came back.””

I looked at her.

“You knew what he was planning?””

“I knew he was trying to gain control. I didn't know about the insurance policy until yesterday.””

She hesitated.

“There's one more thing.””

I was beginning to dread those words.

“What?””

“Marcus has been telling Vanessa that the two of them will leave the country next week.””

Daniel stood.

“What?””

My mother continued.

“He believes he has enough money outside the country to disappear. He also believes Lauren's inheritance will eventually be transferred to him through the guardianship proceedings.””

Rebecca immediately called Samuel Brooks.

He answered quickly.

“We have a problem,” she said.

“We need to know whether Marcus has made any travel arrangements.””

Samuel replied.

“He booked two international flights yesterday.””

“Under whose names?””

“Marcus Mitchell and Vanessa Cole.””

Daniel looked at the floor.

My mother whispered something I couldn't hear.

Then Rebecca asked Samuel another question.

“Is there anything scheduled for tonight?””

He checked his records.

“Yes.””

“What?””

“A private transfer meeting at a storage facility outside the city.””

Rebecca looked at me.

“What's being transferred?””

Samuel hesitated.

“Documents and physical assets. The buyer is listed as an unidentified foreign company.””

I remembered the USB drive.

The offshore account.

The fake medical records.

“Can we stop him?””

“Not without proper authority,” Rebecca answered.

“But we can alert the authorities and preserve evidence.””

I stood.

“I want to go.””

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Absolutely not.””

“Those documents may contain the truth about my mother's estate.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“You don't need to confront him. The police can handle it.””

I looked at my mother.

She had spent five years hiding because she believed it was the only way to keep us safe.

I couldn't ask her to disappear again.

“I won't confront him,” I said.

“But I want to know what he's moving.””

Rebecca considered it.

Then she nodded.

“We'll arrange a controlled operation. You'll remain with the officers.””

That evening, we drove to the storage facility.

The police positioned themselves near the entrance.

Daniel stayed with Emily.

My mother remained at the station with Richard.

I watched through the windshield as Marcus's black SUV entered the facility.

Vanessa was in the passenger seat.

They stopped beside a large metal storage unit.

Marcus unlocked it.

Inside were several filing cabinets, boxes, and a collection of expensive paintings.

Vanessa stepped out.

“You said everything was ready,” she said.

Marcus opened a briefcase.

“It is.””

“What about Lauren?””

“She won't be a problem.””

“You said that before.””

He turned toward her.

“Don't start.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“What happens if the police discover the fake records?””

Marcus laughed.

“They won't.””

He removed a folder.

“By the time anyone understands what happened, we'll be gone.””

Vanessa looked at the folder.

“What's that?””

“Lauren's final authorization.””

She stepped closer.

Then she suddenly backed away.

“Marcus, you told me she had already signed.””

“She will.””

“How?””

He grabbed her wrist.

“Stop asking questions.””

She pulled away.

“Don't touch me.””

Marcus raised his voice.

“You owe me everything. Don't forget who paid for your apartment, your clothes, and your mother's treatment.””

Vanessa went pale.

“My mother?””

He froze.

For the first time, she looked directly into his face.

“What did you just say?””

Marcus shut the briefcase.

“Get in the car.””

But before she could move, police officers surrounded the unit.

“Police! Hands where we can see them!””

Marcus dropped the folder.

Vanessa screamed.

I watched him being pushed against the storage unit.

He turned his head.

When he saw me standing behind the officers, his expression transformed.

“Lauren!””

I didn't move.

He struggled against the officer.

“What are you doing here?””

I looked at the folder lying on the ground.

“Collecting what's mine.””

Then an officer opened the folder.

He pulled out a photograph.

It showed me unconscious in a hospital bed.

Beneath it was a document describing a proposed medical intervention.
