Chapter 9: The Last Signature
By seven the next morning, the Bennett legal team had taken over a conference room at a private London law office.
There were documents covering the table.
Bank statements.
Trust agreements.
Copies of the forged signatures.
Vanessa's recordings.
And the medical report Adrian intended to use against me.
Olivia stood at the head of the table.
“Based on what we've reviewed, Mr. Vale appears to have coordinated several attempts to gain control of the trust assets.””
Thomas sat beside me.
Margot was on my other side.
Evelyn and Vanessa had arrived separately.
Olivia continued.
“The recordings are significant. However, we need to establish the chain of custody and authenticate the documents.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Can you do that?””
She nodded.
“I'll cooperate.””
Olivia turned another page.
“There is also a scheduled transaction.””
I leaned forward.
“What transaction?””
“An attempted transfer of the remaining archive rights to Ashford International.””
“When?””
“Today.””
I stared at her.
“Today?””
“Yes. The transaction is scheduled for eleven thirty.””
I checked the clock.
It was nine fifteen.
“Can we stop it?””
“We have filed an emergency application. But the other side may argue that the transfer was authorized under the existing documents.””
“Even though they're forged?””
“That will be our argument.””
I looked at the folder.
“What do we need?””
Olivia closed it.
“Your testimony. Your original signature records. And the original documents from the blue room.””
I placed my mother's notebook on the table.
“Then take everything.””
Olivia nodded.
But Thomas suddenly stood.
“There's something you should know.””
Everyone turned.
He looked at me.
“Richard has been threatening me.””
I frowned.
“Since when?””
“Since I returned.””
“What kind of threats?””
Thomas removed an old photograph from his pocket.
It showed my mother standing outside the studio.
On the back was a handwritten message.
One daughter is enough. Don't make me take another.
I felt cold.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I didn't want you to be frightened.””
I stared at him.
“I'm already frightened.””
He lowered his head.
“I'm sorry.””
Before I could respond, Olivia's assistant entered the room.
“Ms. Grant, Mr. Vale is here.””
My heart stopped.
Adrian.
He walked into the room wearing a navy suit and a perfectly fitted white shirt.
His hair was neatly combed.
His watch caught the light.
He looked like the man I had married.
The man who used to bring me coffee in bed.
The man who had once driven through a snowstorm because I had mentioned craving a particular dessert.
For a moment, my mind tried to separate that man from the one who had forged my signature.
It couldn't.
Adrian looked around.
His eyes settled on Vanessa.
“You.””
She stood.
“Hello, Adrian.””
He looked at Evelyn.
Then Thomas.
Finally, he turned toward me.
“Claire. We need to talk.””
I remained seated.
“You've had eleven years.””
His jaw tightened.
“I see you've assembled quite a little audience.””
Olivia stepped forward.
“Mr. Vale, this is a legal meeting. If you have counsel, please have them contact our office.””
“I don't need a lawyer to speak to my wife.””
“I'm not your wife,” I replied.
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he smiled.
A small, familiar smile.
“Claire, you're making a terrible mistake.””
I didn't answer.
He placed a folder on the table.
“Here's what I'm offering.””
Olivia didn't touch it.
Adrian opened the folder himself.
“Five million dollars. The Connecticut house. A generous settlement. You sign the transfer agreement, and we end this quietly.””
I stared at him.
“Five million?””
“Tax-free.””
“You stole three million from my trust, attempted to take one hundred and eighty-six million, and now you're offering me five?””
“I'm offering you a way out.””
I leaned forward.
“Out of what?””
He lowered his voice.
“Out of a fight you cannot win.””
I looked at Olivia.
She gave me a small nod.
Then I turned back to Adrian.
“Tell me something.””
“What?””
“Did you ever intend to tell me who you really were?””
His expression changed.
“Claire—”
“Did you know my mother's identity when we met?””
He was silent.
“Did Richard arrange our introduction?””
He looked toward Thomas.
“Your father has filled your head with nonsense.””
Thomas stood.
“Answer her.””
Adrian laughed.
“You want the truth?””
He turned back to me.
“Yes. Richard introduced us.””
My chest tightened.
“How long did you know?””
“From the beginning.””
“Did you ever love me?””
He rubbed his jaw.
“Love wasn't the point.””
The room went completely silent.
I felt the words enter me like ice.
“Then what was?””
“The trust.””
He said it without hesitation.
“The archive. The shares. The company. Richard wanted access, and I was the only person who could get close enough.””
I looked at him.
“So you married me for my inheritance.””
“Initially.””
“Initially?””
He looked away.
I almost laughed.
“That's your defense?””
Adrian's voice softened.
“Things became complicated.””
“How?””
“We built a life together.””
“No, Adrian. I built a life around you. You built a business plan around me.””
His face hardened.
“You think you're innocent? You enjoyed the money. The houses.
The holidays. You liked being Mrs. Vale.””
I stood.
“I liked being loved.””
He looked at me.
For the first time, I saw something resembling uncertainty in his eyes.
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
“You need to leave.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Vanessa.””
“I have the recordings.””
Adrian's face changed.
“What recordings?””
She placed her phone on the table.
“The ones where you explain how you planned to have Claire declared incapable of managing her inheritance.””
He stared at her.
“You wouldn't.””
“I already gave them to Olivia.””
Adrian took a step toward her.
Thomas moved between them.
“Stay where you are.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You people have no idea what you're doing.””
Olivia closed the folder.
“We have sufficient evidence to request immediate preservation of the remaining assets. We also have reason to believe that the medical report was fabricated.””
Adrian turned toward me.
“You're going to regret this.””
I looked at him.
“No. I regret the eleven years I spent believing you.””
His phone rang.
He ignored it.
It rang again.
Finally, he answered.
“What?””
A voice was audible through the speaker.
“Mr. Vale, the bank has frozen the transaction.””
Adrian's face went white.
“What do you mean, frozen?””
“There's an emergency order. We cannot release the funds.””
He looked at Olivia.
“You did this?””
“We protected our client's assets.””
Adrian ended the call.
Then he looked at me.
“You think this is over?””
I reached into my bag and removed my mother's emerald necklace.
I placed it on the table.
“No.””
I paused.
“It's beginning.””
Adrian stared at the necklace.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that he had lost something he could not buy back.
He turned and walked toward the door.
But before he reached it, Olivia spoke.
“One more thing, Mr. Vale.””
He stopped.
“We've received confirmation from the original company registrar. Richard Ashford was never the legal owner of the Bennett archive.””
Adrian slowly turned.
Olivia lifted a final document.
“The original company agreement identifies the sole controlling shareholder.””
I looked at the page.
My mother's signature.
And beside it, the beneficiary designation.
Claire Eleanor Bennett.
Olivia continued.
“Your attempted transfer was not only unauthorized. It was based on a false claim of ownership.””
Adrian's face hardened.
Then his phone rang for the third time.
He answered.
This time, he didn't speak.
He simply listened.
And whatever he heard made him grip the edge of the table.
When the call ended, he looked at me.
“Richard is gone.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He's disappeared.””
Thomas went pale.
Olivia picked up her phone.
“That's impossible. His solicitor confirmed he was in London this morning.””
Adrian shook his head.
“He left a message.””
“What message?”” I asked.
May you like
He looked directly at me.
“He says if you want to know what happened to your mother, you should come alone.””
