Chapter 4: The Man Who Wasn't Dead

I couldn't move.

The man took one step toward me.

Then another.

His silver cane clicked against the marble floor.

“Claire,” he whispered again.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Margot gently touched my arm.

“Sweetheart—”

“No. That's impossible.””

The man stopped.

He didn't try to touch me.

He simply stood there, watching me with the same dark eyes I saw every morning in the mirror.

“I know what Eleanor told you,” he said.

“And I know you have every reason to hate me.””

I swallowed.

“Who are you?””

His face crumpled.

“Your father.””

The word felt unfamiliar.

Almost offensive.

I had grown up with a photograph of a smiling man beside my mother's bed. She had told me he died in a car accident before I was old enough to remember him.

Every birthday, I had placed a flower beside his photograph.

Every Christmas, I had wondered what he would have bought me.

Now he was standing in front of me, alive.

And I didn't know whether to slap him or ask him why.

“What's your name?”” I demanded.

“Thomas Bennett.””

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because my mind couldn't find another way to process the absurdity of the moment.

“You're dead.””

“I know.””

“You've been dead for thirty years.””

He lowered his eyes.

“On paper.””

I turned toward Margot.

“You knew?””

“I knew he was alive,” she said.

“I didn't know when he would return.””

“How long?””

She hesitated.

“Claire—”

“How long have you known?””

“Eight years.””

Eight years.

I stepped backward.

Eight years of birthday dinners.

Eight years of Christmas mornings.

Eight years of standing in my mother's house, looking at the empty chair she had never allowed anyone to remove.

And Margot had known.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Thomas answered.

“Because I was afraid.””

I turned toward him.

“Of what?””

“Richard Ashford.””

His name made my skin crawl.

Thomas took a folded document from his jacket.

“Your mother and I discovered that Ashford had been stealing designs from our company. When we confronted him, he threatened to destroy everything Eleanor had built.””

“What does that have to do with you disappearing?””

“He arranged an accident.””

Thomas's voice broke.

“I survived. But the driver who was with me didn't. Ashford made sure the investigation pointed to me as the person responsible. I was facing criminal charges, and Eleanor was receiving threats.””

He paused.

“She was pregnant with you.””

I looked down.

My mother had been twenty-six when she had me.

“She sent you away?”” I asked.

“She told me to disappear until she could protect you.””

“Then why didn't you come back?””

His eyes filled.

“Because Ashford had people watching her. Every time I tried, something happened. A break-in.

A threat. A warning.””

I shook my head.

“So you just let me grow up without a father?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty was worse than an excuse.

I turned away.

For a moment, I could hear nothing but the hum of the ventilation system.

Then Adrian's voice cut through the silence.

“Claire.””

I looked up.

He was standing several feet away.

Vanessa was beside him.

He had heard enough to understand that something important was happening.

But he was looking at the document in Thomas's hand.

“What's that?”” Adrian asked.

Thomas turned.

“Something you should have never touched.””

Adrian's expression hardened.

“I'm not sure who you are, but I suggest you stay out of my business.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Your business?””

He gave a bitter smile.

“You mean the company you built by selling stolen designs?””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Careful.””

Margot moved beside Thomas.

“Adrian, this is Thomas Bennett. The original co-owner of the Bennett-Moreau design archive.””

Adrian's face changed.

It was the first time that evening I had seen him genuinely frightened.

He looked at Thomas.

Then at Margot.

Then at me.

“You knew?”” he asked.

I stared at him.

“Knew what?””

He pointed toward Thomas.

“That he was alive.””

“No.””

Adrian gave a short laugh.

“Of course.””

Vanessa looked between them.

“Adrian, what's happening?””

He ignored her.

“Claire, we need to leave. Right now.””

I didn't move.

He stepped closer.

“Do you understand what this man could do to you?””

Thomas lifted his cane.

“Stay away from my daughter.””

Adrian laughed.

“Your daughter?””

He turned toward me.

“Claire, don't let these people manipulate you. This is exactly why you should have stayed out of business.””

I looked at him.

“Why are you so afraid of him?””

“I'm not.””

“You're shaking.””

He glanced down.

His hand was trembling.

He quickly shoved it into his pocket.

Margot opened her folder.

“Adrian, the foundation has temporarily suspended all negotiations involving the Eleanor Bennett archive. Our lawyers will be contacting you tomorrow.””

“You can't suspend a deal that's already completed.””

“We can challenge an unauthorized transfer.””

“It was signed.””

“By someone whose signature may have been forged.””

Adrian's eyes snapped toward me.

“Claire, tell them you signed it.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“You know you did.””

“No, Adrian.””

His voice dropped.

“Think carefully about what you're doing.””

I took one step toward him.

“For eleven years, I thought carefully about everything I did. I thought about your reputation before my own. Your career before my dreams. Your comfort before my grief.””

My voice shook, but I didn't stop.

“I even thought about your feelings when I discovered you were sleeping with another woman.””

Vanessa looked away.

I continued.

“But I never once thought about what would happen if I stopped protecting you.””

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“Don't threaten me.””

“I'm not threatening you.””

I looked at the necklace.

“I'm finished protecting you.””

Thomas reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.

“Claire, there's something else you need to see.””

He handed it to me.

My name was written across the front.

Not Claire Vale.

Claire Bennett.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of my mother holding a newborn baby.

On the back, she had written:

To my little girl. One day, you will understand why I kept the truth from you.

Below it was a second line.

The Bennett trust belongs to Claire. No one else.

I looked at Thomas.

“What trust?””

He didn't answer immediately.

Margot did.

“Your mother left you more than the design archive.””

“How much more?””

Margot glanced toward Adrian.

“Enough to make your husband's entire fortune look very small.””

Adrian went pale.

May you like

Then Thomas said something that made my blood run cold.

“Claire, before you decide what to do with that inheritance, you need to know that someone has already tried to claim it in your name.””
