Chapter 8: The Brother I Never Knew

The name remained on the screen long after Eleanor stopped speaking.

James Whitmore.

I looked at Daniel.

“Is this some kind of mistake?””

He examined the trust documents.

“I can't say yet.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“It's not a mistake. James submitted a request to review the trust's ownership structure several years ago. It was rejected because he didn't provide sufficient evidence of his entitlement.””

“Why would he be entitled to anything?””

“Because your mother promised him something.””

I felt my head begin to ache.

“My mother never mentioned him.””

“Your mother knew him before you were born. She and I were close friends. James was like a nephew to her.””

Eleanor paused.

“After your mother's death, Robert believed James had been involved in a financial dispute. He asked me to keep him away from the trust.””

Daniel opened another file.

“There's a date here. The latest request was submitted eight months ago.””

“Eight months?”” I repeated.

“That was before the suspicious transfers began,” Daniel said.

Eleanor nodded.

“And it was signed by James himself.””

I looked at the camera.

“Where is he now?””

Eleanor took a deep breath.

“Chicago, as far as I know.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Can we contact him?””

“Not until we verify the documents.””

Eleanor's expression tightened.

“Denise, I need you to understand something. James may not be the person your father remembered.””

I thought about Marcus.

About Vanessa.

About Rachel.

It seemed everyone had a different version of themselves depending on what they wanted.

“Then I want to hear his version.””

Daniel arranged a meeting two days later.

James agreed to meet us at a private conference room in a hotel near the airport.

I arrived with Daniel.

A man was already waiting.

He stood when we entered.

He was in his early forties, tall and lean, with dark hair and a faint scar near his left eyebrow.

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he smiled sadly.

“You have your mother's eyes.””

I stopped.

“Are you James?””

He nodded.

“James Whitmore.””

I sat opposite him.

“Why did you try to access my trust?””

He didn't appear offended.

“Because I believe your father stole something from my family.””

Daniel opened his briefcase.

“Let's establish the facts before making accusations.””

James nodded.

“Of course.””

He placed a small envelope on the table.

Inside was an old photograph.

My mother.

Eleanor.

A little boy.

And a younger version of my father.

On the back, someone had written:

For the two children who will inherit what we build.

I stared.

“Who is the boy?””

“Me.””

I looked at him.

“How old were you?””

“Seven.””

I studied the photograph.

My mother was holding his hand.

There was a tenderness in her expression I had never seen in family pictures.

“Why did my father hide this?””

James leaned back.

“Because he believed I was a threat.””

“Were you?””

He was quiet.

Then he answered.

“Not initially.””

Daniel glanced at him.

“Explain.””

James folded his hands.

“My mother and your parents built Carter Industrial together. The company was originally supposed to be divided between their families. Your mother wanted the children to inherit equal shares.””

I stared.

“Equal?””

“Yes. Your mother believed families should share opportunities, not compete over them.””

“Then what happened?””

“My father died when I was young. Your father took over the company. He gradually bought out the remaining shares, but some of the original ownership arrangements were never resolved.””

I turned to Daniel.

“Is that true?””

He examined the photograph.

“It's consistent with the original trust documents Eleanor provided.””

James continued.

“When your mother died, Robert changed the arrangement. He told my mother that the trust was being reorganized for tax purposes. She trusted him.””

“And you?””

“I was a teenager. I didn't know anything about it until years later.””

I stared at the envelope.

“Why didn't you contact me?””

“I tried.””

He took out a second folder.

Inside were copies of letters addressed to me.

All dated over the previous decade.

Some had been returned.

Others had been marked undeliverable.

One had been sent to my old university address.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who intercepted these?””

James shook his head.

“I don't know.””

He placed another photograph on the table.

This one showed Marcus.

Standing beside him.

The two men were outside a restaurant.

The date was only eight months earlier.

My stomach dropped.

“You know Marcus?””

James's expression hardened.

“Unfortunately.””

“How?””

“He approached me last year.””

“About the trust?””

“Yes. He said he could help me recover what my family was owed.””

I looked at the photograph.

“What did you do?””

“I listened.””

“And?””

James reached into the folder.

He removed a printed email.

Marcus had written:

Once the transfer is complete, Denise will have no claim to the property. You'll receive your portion through the holding company.

I stared.

“He promised you part of my house?””

James shook his head.

“He promised me the money he believed I was entitled to.””

“Did you agree?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

He looked directly at me.

“Because I recognized the same pattern my mother warned me about.””

He pushed another document toward Daniel.

“Marcus wanted me to sign a declaration saying your mother had promised me the entire trust.””

Daniel examined it.

“That would have created a serious ownership dispute.””

“Exactly.””

I looked at James.

“Why are you helping me now?””

He was quiet for several seconds.

Then he said something I hadn't expected.

“Because your mother made me promise something.””

“What?””

“That if you ever came looking for the truth, I would tell you what happened the night before your wedding.””

My blood ran cold.

The same words from my father's letter.

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

James reached into his coat and removed a small silver key.

He placed it in front of me.

“Your mother left something in a safe-deposit box. Robert never found it.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Where?””

“Boston.””

James looked at me.

“There's a recording inside. Your mother made it shortly before she died.””

My hands began to tremble.

“What does it say?””

May you like

James lowered his voice.

“It explains why Marcus was at your father's house the night before your wedding.””
