Chapter 7: The Woman My Father Trusted

I stared at the photograph.
Marcus looked about twenty-five.
He was standing beside my father and Eleanor outside a large brick building.
All three were smiling.
The date printed on the back was seventeen years earlier.
I looked at Daniel.
“Marcus knew my father before we met?””
“Apparently.””
“Why didn't he tell me?””
“That is one of the questions we need Eleanor to answer.””
I picked up the photograph.
My father looked younger than I remembered him.
His hair was darker. His shoulders were broad. He had one arm resting casually behind Eleanor.
Marcus stood beside them, wearing an expensive suit and a confident smile.
I felt suddenly disconnected from everything I thought I knew.
“Where was this taken?””
“Carter Industrial's former headquarters.””
My father had built Carter Industrial from a small warehouse into a regional construction-supply company.
He had sold most of his ownership before retiring.
Marcus had always said he first met my father at a charity event.
He had even told the story at our wedding.
Apparently, the story had been rehearsed.
“Call Eleanor,” I said.
Daniel nodded.
The following morning, we were on a video call with Eleanor Whitmore.
She appeared on the screen wearing a dark green jacket, her silver hair neatly arranged.
She looked directly at me.
“Denise Carter.””
I swallowed.
“Hello.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Eleanor removed her glasses.
“You look exactly like your father.””
I felt my eyes sting.
“Did you know him well?””
She gave a small, sad smile.
“Your father was my closest friend for nearly thirty years.””
“Then why have I never heard of you?””
“Because Robert asked me to stay away.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Why?””
Eleanor folded her hands.
“Because of Marcus.””
The name seemed to change the temperature of the room.
“Tell me,” I said.
Eleanor took a breath.
“Marcus worked for your father's company when he was younger. He was intelligent, ambitious, and very good at making people believe he was indispensable.””
I remembered the confidence with which Marcus spoke about business.
“He worked for Dad?””
“For almost three years. He was involved in acquisitions and financial planning. Robert initially thought highly of him.””
“What happened?””
“Marcus began moving money between company accounts without proper authorization. Small amounts at first. Then larger ones.””
I stared at the screen.
“Was he fired?””
“He resigned before your father could confront him publicly.””
“Why didn't Dad report him?””
Eleanor looked down.
“Because your father discovered something more troubling.””
“What?””
“Marcus had been using personal information about company executives to obtain financial advantages. He had access to confidential files. He knew which employees had family trusts, which directors had debts, and which investors were vulnerable.””
My hands tightened.
“And he knew about me?””
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
Eleanor continued.
“Your father discovered that Marcus had researched your inheritance before you ever met him.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Robert was devastated. He believed Marcus had approached you deliberately.””
I remembered our first meeting.
A charity fundraiser.
Marcus had been charming, funny, and attentive.
He had asked about my father.
About my childhood.
About the family business.
I had thought he was simply interested in my life.
Now those conversations felt different.
“Did Dad tell me?””
“He wanted to. But you were in love, and he feared that confronting you would push you further away.””
I looked at Daniel.
He remained silent.
Eleanor continued.
“Robert created the trust to protect you. He appointed me as independent trustee and included provisions that would activate if Marcus attempted to gain control of your assets.””
I stared at the screen.
“So my father knew?””
“He suspected Marcus would eventually try.””
I covered my mouth.
“Why did he let me marry him?””
Eleanor's expression softened.
“Your father didn't let you marry anyone, Denise. He loved you too much to control your choices.””
I began crying.
For six years, I had believed my father had left me with money and memories.
I hadn't known he had left me a warning.
Eleanor sent us several archived documents.
Among them was a letter dated three months before my wedding.
Daniel opened it.
The handwriting was unmistakably my father's.
Eleanor,
I have seen enough to believe Marcus's intentions are not sincere. Denise deserves the chance to make her own decision, but I cannot allow him to destroy what I have worked to protect.
If he attempts to access the trust, activate the protective provision.
There is one more matter. The original Carter company records must remain sealed until Denise asks for them.
She deserves to know the truth about her mother.
I stopped breathing.
“My mother?””
My mother had died when I was twelve.
I had always been told she had passed away after a long illness.
I looked at Daniel.
“What does my mother have to do with this?””
Eleanor's face became grave.
“Your mother was involved in the original Carter business. She helped establish the company with your father.””
I frowned.
“I thought Dad started it alone.””
“No. Your mother owned forty percent.””
I stared.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“After she died, her shares were transferred into a protected family arrangement. Robert never wanted you to feel responsible for business matters while you were growing up.””
Daniel looked through the records.
“There's something else.””
He pointed to a document.
The trust's original beneficiary structure listed two names.
Denise Carter.
And an individual named James Whitmore.
I looked at Eleanor.
“Who is James Whitmore?””
She closed her eyes briefly.
“My son.””
“Your son?””
“Yes.””
“Why is he listed?””
Eleanor leaned toward the camera.
“Because your mother and I made an agreement many years ago. If something happened to either of us, our children would be protected by the same trust structure.””
I frowned.
“Then why did I never meet him?””
“Because he disappeared.””
I felt a chill.
“What do you mean, disappeared?””
“James left Boston twenty years ago. We lost contact. Robert spent years trying to find him.””
Daniel examined the document.
“Is there any evidence that he is still alive?””
Eleanor hesitated.
“Yes.””
My heart began to pound.
“Where?””
She looked directly at me.
“Before I answer, I need to tell you something about Marcus.””
“What?””
“He wasn't the only person who wanted control of your inheritance.””
The video call went silent.
Eleanor continued.
“Someone else has been trying to activate the trust for years. And the latest documents indicate that person may have been helping Marcus.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Do you have a name?””
May you like
Eleanor nodded.
“James Whitmore.””
