Chapter 9: My Father's Last Secret
I waited until Maya was asleep before showing my mother Rachel's message.
Evelyn read it once.
Then again.
Her hands began trembling.
“Marcus,” she whispered.
“What happened three days before Dad died?””
She slowly sat down.
For a long time, she didn't answer.
Then she said, “Your father knew he was dying.””
I pulled out the chair opposite her.
“I know.””
“No. I mean he knew how little time he had left.””
She stared at the photograph on the mantel.
“Three days before he died, he asked me to bring his solicitor to the hospital.””
“Thomas?””
She nodded.
“He wanted to change his will.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Why?””
“Because he had discovered that someone had been accessing his private business accounts.””
“Who?””
Mom looked at me.
“Rachel.””
I sat back.
“What?””
“Your father had given Rachel limited access to some company records because she handled operations. He discovered that several payments had been redirected.””
“How much?””
“About six hundred thousand dollars.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because your father asked me not to until he had proof.””
“Did he get proof?””
She nodded.
“He had copies of the transactions. He also had a recording.””
I leaned forward.
“Where is it?””
Mom closed her eyes.
“I don't know.””
I stared at her.
“You don't know?””
“He told me it was stored somewhere safe. He said Thomas knew where it was.””
I felt anger rising.
“Thomas was helping Rachel.””
“I didn't know that.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“Mom, why didn't you tell me about the will?””
“Because the changes were never finalized.””
“What changes?””
She looked down.
“Your father removed Rachel from one of the company succession provisions. He also strengthened the protections around Maya's inheritance.””
I sat silently.
My father had seen what I hadn't.
He had recognized the danger.
And he had tried to leave us a way out.
But Rachel had apparently found a way around the safeguards.
“Mom, did Dad ever mention Ethan?””
She looked confused.
“Gregory's son?””
“Yes.””
She nodded slowly.
“Your father knew about the incident at the hotel.””
I felt my heart stop.
“What?””
“He received a phone call from someone who worked there. A security employee.””
I leaned closer.
“What did they tell him?””
Mom swallowed.
“They said the hotel footage had been requested by Thomas. They also said a woman had entered the pool area with Ethan shortly before he died.””
I stood.
“Why didn't Dad go to the police?””
“He tried.””
“What happened?””
Mom looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“He was admitted to the hospital the next morning. He never recovered enough to speak to investigators.””
I paced the room.
Everything was connected.
Rachel.
Vanessa.
Thomas.
The stolen money.
The Christmas incident.
Ethan's death.
And my father's final attempt to protect Maya.
I called Olivia Grant.
She answered immediately.
“Mr. Carter?””
“I need you to investigate a recording my father made before his death.””
She listened carefully.
Then she asked me to describe everything.
When I mentioned the hotel footage, she went quiet.
“Marcus, that may be significant.””
“Can you find it?””
“I'll contact the original hotel and request that investigators preserve any remaining records.””
“Do it.””
I ended the call.
Mom was still sitting at the table.
She looked exhausted.
I knelt beside her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
She touched my face.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Rachel?””
“Of losing my family.””
I understood.
She had watched her son build a life with a woman he loved.
She had watched her granddaughter grow.
She had hoped the problems would disappear.
But silence had given Rachel more room to operate.
I squeezed her hand.
“We're going to fix this.””
She nodded.
Then she whispered, “Your father would be proud of you.””
I looked down.
“I should have seen it sooner.””
“No,” she said firmly.
“The person who lies is responsible for the lie. Not the person who believes someone they love.””
I wanted to believe her.
The next morning, Gregory called.
He sounded different.
More focused.
“Marcus, the police found something.””
“What?””
“Vanessa's second phone.””
“Where?””
“In a safe at our house.””
“What's on it?””
“Messages with Rachel. And a video.””
I closed my eyes.
“What video?””
Gregory took a breath.
“It's from the night Ethan died.””
My blood turned cold.
“Have you watched it?””
“Yes.””
“What does it show?””
He went quiet.
Then he said, “Rachel was there.””
“Was Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“And Ethan?””
Gregory's voice cracked.
“Yes.””
I sat down.
“Gregory, tell me exactly what you saw.””
“The video was recorded by a hotel security camera. It shows Ethan standing near the pool entrance. Vanessa and Rachel are talking to him.””
“What happens next?””
“Ethan tries to walk away. Rachel grabs his arm.””
I closed my eyes.
Gregory continued.
“Vanessa looks toward the camera. Then she moves in front of it.””
“Can you see what happens?””
“Not clearly.””
“Then why are you calling?””
“Because there's audio.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does it say?””
Gregory took a shaky breath.
“Ethan says, 'I won't tell Daddy about the money, but please don't make me go with her.''”
I felt sick.
Then Gregory continued.
“Rachel says, 'You're going to do exactly what I tell you.''”
There was a long silence.
“What happens after that?””
“Ethan screams.””
Gregory stopped speaking.
I heard him crying.
“Gregory?””
“I'm here.””
“Are you okay?””
“No.””
I understood.
“Give the video to the police. Don't send it around.””
“I already did.””
“Good.””
Then Gregory said something that made my heart pound.
“The police have arrested Rachel.””
I stood.
“What?””
“They found her at the storage facility. She was trying to access a locked unit.””
“Did they find anything?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
“Documents. A passport. Cash. And several photographs of Maya.””
My stomach turned.
“What kind of photographs?””
“Pictures taken outside your house. Outside the school. At your mother's home.””
I felt cold all over.
“How long has she been watching us?””
Gregory didn't answer.
Then he said, “Marcus, there's something else in the storage unit.””
“What?””
“A box containing Ethan's belongings.””
I couldn't speak.
Gregory continued.
“His school bag. His watch. His shoes.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Why would Rachel have those?””
“I don't know.””
He began crying again.
“But the police found something inside the watch.””
“What?””
“A memory card.””
I stared at the wall.
The officers had taken it for examination.
And according to Gregory, the card contained a short audio recording.
Ethan's voice.
A frightened little boy speaking quietly.
“Daddy, if you hear this, I didn't go into the pool by myself.””
I closed my eyes.
Gregory was sobbing now.
I couldn't find the words to comfort him.
Then he said:
“Marcus, my son knew something was going to happen.””
Rachel's arrest changed everything.
The police confirmed that she was being questioned over suspected financial fraud, forged documents, and the incidents involving Maya.
Vanessa was also being investigated.
Thomas had agreed to provide evidence.
But the most important development came from the hospital.
The original Christmas drawing had been recovered.
And it contained more than a picture.
On the back, in Maya's childish handwriting, were six words.
*Mommy said don't tell Daddy.*
Beneath that sentence was a small drawing of a woman wearing a silver bracelet.
The same bracelet I had bought Rachel.
The same bracelet visible in the security footage.
The same bracelet she had worn when she arrived at school and pretended to be concerned about Maya.
The evidence was becoming impossible to dismiss.
But I still needed to speak to Rachel.
Not alone.
Not privately.
Not without protection.
Officer Lewis arranged a supervised meeting after Rachel's initial questioning.
I entered the interview room with my attorney.
Rachel sat across the table.
Her hair was untidy.
Her expensive clothes had been replaced with a plain gray sweater.
For the first time, she looked ordinary.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just a woman who had finally run out of people willing to protect her.
She looked at me.
“Marcus.””
I sat down.
“Where is my daughter?””
“With your mother, I assume.””
“Don't say her name like you care.””
Rachel's eyes narrowed.
“You're enjoying this.””
I stared at her.
“My daughter is afraid to sleep without the hallway light on.””
Rachel looked away.
“She'll get over it.””
My hands tightened beneath the table.
“Do you understand what you've done?””
“I made mistakes.””
“You held her down while someone destroyed her costume.””
“I was trying to teach her a lesson.””
“She is eight!””
“She was becoming spoiled.””
I stared at her.
Then I asked the question I had wanted to ask since the first night.
“Why did you hurt her?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Because you were giving her everything.””
I waited.
“She had your attention. Your mother's attention. The company would eventually be hers.
The trust was hers. Everything revolved around Maya.””
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“She is our child.””
“And I was your wife!””
Her voice rose.
“You never understood what it was like. I spent years watching you build your company while I handled everything at home.””
“You had a career. You had access to the business. You had everything we built together.””
“I had nothing that was truly mine!””
I stared at her.
“So you decided to steal from your daughter?””
Rachel's face hardened.
“She didn't need that money.””
“It belonged to her.””
“She wouldn't have known.””
I leaned forward.
“She knew you hurt her.””
Rachel looked down.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked:
“What happened to Ethan?””
Her head snapped up.
“That's none of your business.””
“It became my business when you involved my daughter in the same plan.””
Rachel's eyes narrowed.
“You don't know what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
She leaned back.
“Ethan was an accident.””
“Then why did you take his belongings?””
She said nothing.
“Why did you hide the memory card?””
Still nothing.
“Why did you tell Lily that her brother was bad?””
Rachel's expression changed.
For the first time, I saw fear.
“Where did you hear that?””
“From Lily.””
Rachel stood abruptly.
“You've been talking to that child?””
The officer beside her instructed her to sit.
Rachel ignored him.
“You have no idea what Lily is capable of!””
I stared at her.
“She is a little girl.””
“She lies!””
“So did Maya, according to you.””
Rachel froze.
I stood.
“I came here because I wanted to understand whether there was any part of you that regretted what happened.””
She looked at me.
I waited.
Finally, she whispered, “I never wanted Maya to get hurt that badly.””
I nodded slowly.
“That's the problem, Rachel. You never wanted her to get hurt. You just wanted her to hurt enough to obey you.””
Her eyes filled.
But I felt nothing.
I walked toward the door.
Then Rachel spoke.
“Marcus.””
I stopped.
She looked directly at me.
“Your father knew about Ethan.””
I turned.
“What?””
“He knew what happened at the hotel.””
“Why?””
“Because he was there the night before Ethan died.””
My blood ran cold.
“That doesn't make sense.””
Rachel smiled weakly.
“Ask your mother.””
I stared at her.
May you like
Then she added:
“Your father didn't die knowing the truth. He died because someone made sure he couldn't tell it.””
