Chapter 4: The Money They Stole From My Daughter

I stepped into the hallway before answering.

“What did you just say, Gregory?””

There was silence on the other end.

Then a tired sigh.

“I knew this day would come.””

I gripped the phone.

“What money?””

“Your daughter's trust.””

I looked through the glass panel into the conference room.

Maya was sitting beside her grandmother.

Danielle was holding her hand.

“Gregory, I need you to explain everything.””

“I can't do that over the phone.””

“Then come to the school.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

Another silence.

Then he said, “Because Vanessa has already told me what happened tonight. She's claiming you attacked her.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course she was.

“She destroyed my daughter's costume.””

“I know.””

“She helped my wife hold Maya down.””

“I know that too.””

My voice dropped.

“How?””

Gregory exhaled.

“Because Vanessa called me after it happened. She told me everything.””

I looked at the phone.

“Then why didn't you stop them?””

“I tried.””

His voice cracked.

“Marcus, I swear I tried.””

I wanted to believe him.

But I had learned enough that evening to know promises meant very little.

“Meet me tomorrow morning,” I said.

“I'll come.””

“And Gregory?””

“Yes?””

“If you know anything about the money, bring every document you have.””

He agreed.

I ended the call.

When I returned to the conference room, Officer Lewis was waiting.

He had finished reviewing Danielle's recording.

“We need to discuss the financial documents,” he said.

I handed him the bank statement.

He studied it.

“Do you recognize this transaction?””

“Yes. My mother says it came from a trust established for Maya.””

“Who had authorization?””

“Rachel.””

He nodded.

“Have you contacted the bank?””

“Not yet.””

“Do that immediately. Request a temporary freeze and preserve all transaction records.””

I called the bank's fraud department.

After verifying my identity, I explained the situation.

The representative placed me on hold.

I could hear soft piano music playing while my daughter's inheritance was apparently disappearing into someone else's company.

After ten minutes, the representative returned.

“Mr. Carter, I can confirm that the account has experienced several transfers.””

“How many?””

“Five in the last six months.””

My stomach tightened.

“Total amount?””

“Approximately nine hundred and twenty thousand dollars.””

I closed my eyes.

Almost a million dollars.

Money my father had left for his granddaughter.

Money Rachel had promised to protect.

“Can you freeze the account?””

“Because you're not the primary authorized administrator, we need documentation establishing your legal authority.””

“I'm her father.””

“I understand, sir.””

I nearly shouted.

But I stopped myself.

Maya was in the room.

I asked for the fraud department supervisor and requested that the disputed transactions be flagged immediately.

Then I called my attorney.

His name was Thomas Reed.

He had represented my father for twenty years and handled the original trust documents.

He answered despite the late hour.

“Marcus?””

“Tom, I need help.””

I explained everything.

When I mentioned the Coleman Holdings transfer, he went quiet.

Then he asked a question.

“Did Rachel ever tell you that your father placed restrictions on the trust?””

“No.””

“Did she ever ask you to sign documents concerning Maya's inheritance?””

I remembered a folder she'd brought home months earlier.

She'd said they were routine estate updates.

I'd signed the last page without reading every detail.

My stomach dropped.

“Tom, I think I signed something.””

“What exactly?””

“I don't remember.””

He sighed.

“Marcus, I need you to send me a copy of everything Rachel has given you. Don't sign anything else.””

Then he said something that made me sit down.

“Your father anticipated that someone might try to misuse that trust. He created a safeguard.””

“What safeguard?””

“A second beneficiary verification system.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Every withdrawal above fifty thousand dollars required independent confirmation from the trustee.””

“Who was the trustee?””

“Your mother.””

I looked toward Evelyn.

She was gently brushing Maya's hair.

“Then how did Rachel transfer the money?””

Tom was quiet.

“That's what I intend to find out.””

I hung up.

Across the room, my mother had begun examining the destroyed costume.

She picked up one of the golden wings.

The frame was bent.

A small piece of fabric had been cut cleanly from the center.

Mom frowned.

“Marcus.””

I walked over.

“What?””

She held up the wing.

“Look at this.””

A tiny black device was attached beneath the gold ribbon.

I stared.

“What is that?””

Mom carefully removed it.

It was a small tracking tag.

My blood ran cold.

“Why would someone put that in Maya's costume?””

Mom examined the device.

“I don't know.””

Officer Lewis approached.

“Don't touch it any further. We'll document it.””

He placed it inside an evidence bag.

Then he asked Maya whether she'd seen anyone attach it.

She shook her head.

“No.””

I looked at the device.

Suddenly, something occurred to me.

Maya had taken the costume home several times.

She had worn it at Grandma's house.

She had carried it in the car.

Someone could have used it to track where she went.

I felt sick.

Officer Lewis took the device away.

Then another officer entered the room.

“Officer Lewis, we have a development.””

He handed him a phone.

“Mrs. Carter's vehicle was located outside the school.””

I looked up.

“Rachel is still here?””

“No, sir. She left approximately ten minutes ago.””

I stood.

“What?””

Officer Lewis checked the screen.

“She told us she needed to retrieve her purse from the parking lot. She drove away before we could complete the interview.””

My heart started racing.

“Where did she go?””

“We're trying to establish that.””

I immediately called Rachel.

She didn't answer.

I sent a message.

*Marcus: Where are you? We need to talk about the trust.*

No reply.

Then I received a message from an unknown number.

*Unknown: Stop asking questions. You don't know what your father really left behind.*

I showed Officer Lewis.

He photographed the message.

“Don't respond.””

I nodded.

A minute later, another message arrived.

This one was from Rachel.

*Rachel: If you want Maya to remain safe, stop digging into the past.*

I stared at the screen.

My daughter had been threatened.

Again.

Officer Lewis immediately asked for a copy.

Then my attorney called back.

“Marcus, I've reviewed the preliminary records.””

“What did you find?””

“Rachel didn't just withdraw money.””

I gripped the phone.

“What do you mean?””

“She appears to have changed the administrative structure of the trust.””

“Can she do that?””

“Not without your mother's approval.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“Mom?””

She shook her head.

“I never approved anything.””

Tom continued.

“There's another issue. Someone submitted a document bearing your signature.””

My stomach dropped.

“Is it real?””

“I'm not sure yet. But if it's forged, this becomes much more serious.””

“What does the document say?””

He paused.

“It's a request to transfer Maya's entire trust into a new custodial account.””

“Where?””

Tom read the name.

“Coleman Family Investment Group.””

I couldn't speak.

Vanessa's family.

The same family whose daughter had been promised Maya's solo.

The same family whose company had received nearly half a million dollars.

I turned toward Danielle.

She had gone pale.

“Marcus,” she whispered.

“What?””

She slowly opened her purse and removed the folded paper Vanessa had given her.

“There was something on the back.””

She turned it over.

A handwritten note appeared beneath the legal document.

It was short.

But it explained everything.

*Once Maya is no longer the beneficiary, Rachel gets control. Vanessa gets her share. Marcus gets nothing.*

I stared at the words.

Then Danielle pointed to the bottom.

There was a date.

The date of Maya's eighth birthday.

Three months earlier.

This wasn't a sudden scheme.

May you like

They had been planning it for months.

And according to the note, the costume incident was supposed to be only the beginning.
