Chapter 8: The Christmas Secret Hidden in a Bank Account

Daniel spent the next two days reviewing Robert's old records.

I stayed at home, answering questions when he called and avoiding every attempt by Ethan or Brooke to contact me.

On Sunday afternoon, Daniel arrived with a second attorney and a financial investigator.

They spread documents across my dining table.

Robert's notebook sat in the center.

“Margaret,” Daniel began, “we've found something significant.””

He showed me a series of bank transfers.

Three payments had been made from a business account controlled by Frank Harrington to a consulting company registered under Brooke's name.

The payments totaled $275,000.

“Why would Frank pay Brooke?”” I asked.

“We don't know the full explanation yet,” Daniel said.

“But the company appears to have received money connected to the old partnership dispute.””

“Was Robert investigating it?””

“Yes.””

Daniel placed another document on the table.

It was an email Robert had printed before his death.

The message was from an accountant who had worked on the Harrington project.

The transfers were not authorized by Mr. Collins. The supporting invoices appear to have been created after the payments were made.

I stared at the paper.

“Does this mean Frank stole money from Robert?””

“It suggests that company funds may have been misappropriated. We need an independent forensic audit before drawing conclusions.””

“And Brooke?””

“She was listed as the director of the consulting company.””

I remembered Brooke telling me that Robert wasn't always honest.

The irony was almost unbearable.

Then Daniel placed a final document in front of me.

It was Robert's amended estate plan.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

My husband's signature appeared at the bottom.

Daniel explained that Robert had placed controlling ownership of Collins Holdings under a protective structure designed to preserve my authority while preventing Ethan or any outside party from transferring the assets without my approval.

Ethan would receive a separate inheritance.

But he wouldn't control the company.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why?””

“Robert believed Ethan was vulnerable to financial pressure. He wanted to give him an inheritance without giving anyone a way to use him to access the company.””

I touched the document.

“That sounds like Robert.””

Daniel nodded.

“There's also a personal letter.””

He handed it to me.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My Maggie,

If you're reading this, I've probably left you to face a world without me. I hate that thought.

My eyes filled.

I know Ethan will always be our little boy to you. I feel the same way. But he's grown into a man, and sometimes men make choices because they want to prove they are stronger than they really are.

If Frank ever approaches him, be careful.

Frank knows how to make people feel important. He also knows how to make them feel indebted.

I don't believe Ethan understands the full history between us.

I hope I'm wrong.

I wiped my eyes.

Then I read the final paragraph.

There is one thing I need you to remember. The company was never meant to make us powerful. It was meant to give us freedom. Never surrender that freedom because someone makes you feel small.

I lowered the letter.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Daniel waited.

Then I asked, “What happens now?””

“We proceed with the shareholders' meeting tomorrow. We also notify the lender that the disputed documents are being investigated.””

“Will Ethan be there?””

“Yes.””

“And Frank?””

“He has accepted the invitation.””

I nodded.

“Good.””

That evening, I received a call from Ethan.

I answered.

“Mom?””

“Yes.””

“Can we meet?””

“Why?””

“Because I need to tell you something.””

I sat down.

“I'm listening.””

He was quiet for several seconds.

“Brooke has left the house.””

I closed my eyes.

“I'm sorry.””

“She took some clothes and went to her parents' home.””

“Are you all right?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Mom, I think I've made a terrible mistake.””

I didn't rush to comfort him.

“What happened?””

“Frank told me the investment was guaranteed. He said the money was already secured. He said the house would be transferred to us once the paperwork was completed.””

“Did you know the house belonged to Collins Holdings?””

“I knew Dad had arranged something through the company. Brooke said it was only temporary.””

“Ethan, did you read the agreement?””

“No.””

“Why?””

He exhaled.

“Because I trusted her.””

I looked at Robert's photograph.

“Trust isn't the same as refusing to ask questions.””

“I know.””

Then he said something unexpected.

“Mom, Brooke told me something yesterday.””

“What?””

“She said Dad had a secret account.””

I sat straighter.

“What account?””

“She said Robert kept money separate from the company. She thought it was connected to the old partnership.””

I looked toward Daniel's documents.

“Did she say how much?””

“Almost two million dollars.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

Daniel had never mentioned that amount.

“Did she tell you where it was?””

“No. She said Frank had been trying to locate it for years.””

I looked at Robert's letter.

“Ethan, do you know anything else?””

He hesitated.

“Brooke said the account was supposed to be part of your inheritance, but Dad moved it before he died.””

“Where?””

“I don't know.””

Then he whispered:

“She said the account could prove Frank had been taking money from the company for years.””

I closed my eyes.

That changed everything.

If such an account existed, it might contain evidence of the old financial dispute.

And if Frank had been trying to locate it, perhaps the attempted takeover wasn't only about the commercial property.

“Ethan,” I said, “why are you telling me this now?””

“Because I found something in Brooke's desk.””

“What?””

“A letter from Frank.””

“What did it say?””

His breathing became unsteady.

“It said that if the Collins account was ever discovered, they needed to make sure you couldn't testify.””

I felt a chill run down my spine.

“Ethan, do you have that letter?””

“Yes.””

“Keep it safe. Don't give it to Brooke or her father.””

“Mom, there's something else.””

“What?””

He whispered:

“Frank has been telling people that Robert's death was convenient for him.””

I couldn't breathe for a moment.

“Who has he been telling?””

“I don't know. But I heard him say it to one of his investors.””

The call ended shortly afterward.

I sat alone at the dining table.

Robert's letter was in front of me.

His handwriting seemed almost alive.

If Frank ever approaches him, be careful.

For the first time, I wondered whether my husband had known he was in danger.

The next morning, I would walk into a room full of people who believed I was an old widow who didn't understand business.

They would discover something Robert had spent his final days protecting.

May you like

And this time, I wouldn't be carrying a pot roast.

I'd be carrying the truth.
