Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

Ethan stared at Daniel's desk.

“It's not what you think,” he said.

Daniel didn't move.

“Then explain it.””

My son swallowed.

“The investment group needed additional security. Brooke's father said it was standard procedure.””

“What security?”” I asked.

Ethan looked at me.

“Some company documents.””

“What company documents?””

“Mom, please.””

Daniel opened the blue folder and removed a printed copy of a document.

“Margaret, I believe you should see this.””

He placed it in front of me.

At the top was the name Collins Holdings.

Below it were several paragraphs describing a proposed guarantee for a business loan.

Then I saw the signature.

My name.

Margaret Collins.

I leaned closer.

The signature looked convincing.

Almost convincing.

But it wasn't mine.

My real signature had a small upward curve at the end of the letter M. This one didn't.

“Who signed this?”” I whispered.

Daniel answered carefully.

“I don't know yet. But it wasn't you.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Did you know about this?””

He stared at the floor.

“Brooke said it was already authorized.””

“By whom?””

“Her father.””

“Did you see me sign it?””

“No.””

“Did you ask me?””

He shook his head.

I felt something inside me go quiet.

Not anger.

Something worse.

The realization that my own son had been willing to gamble his father's life's work without even asking whether I knew.

Daniel tapped the paper.

“This document appears to pledge company assets as security for a substantial loan. We have not authenticated it yet, but if someone has submitted it as genuine, we need to act immediately.””

I looked at him.

“What should I do?””

“First, we notify the lender that the authorization is disputed. Second, we secure the company's records. Third, we determine who prepared and submitted this document.””

Ethan stood abruptly.

“Mom, you don't need to involve the police.””

Daniel looked up.

“That depends on what the investigation establishes.””

“It's a family matter.””

I turned toward my son.

“Is that what you called it when you signed papers claiming to own my house?””

He flinched.

“Mom, I was trying to help Brooke.””

“By stealing from me?””

“I wasn't stealing!””

“Then why is my signature on a document I never signed?””

He didn't answer.

Daniel's office phone rang.

He picked it up, listened for several seconds, and then placed it on speaker.

A man's voice came through.

“Mr. Mercer, this is Richard Lawson from First Carolina Commercial Bank. We need to clarify the ownership of the Harrington residence and the collateral authorization submitted yesterday.””

Daniel responded calmly.

“We dispute the validity of the authorization bearing Margaret Collins's signature.””

There was a pause.

“That's concerning,” the man said.

“We were informed that Mrs. Collins had approved the transaction.””

I looked at Ethan.

His face had gone completely white.

Daniel continued.

“She has not approved anything. We request that all activity connected to the proposed loan be suspended immediately.””

“Understood. However, I need to inform you that the loan file also contains a personal guarantee from Mr. Ethan Collins.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“What guarantee?”” I asked.

The banker continued.

“Mr. Collins pledged his personal investment account and signed a guarantee covering the full financing amount.””

I turned toward my son.

“You pledged your own money?””

Ethan nodded.

“Brooke said the project was safe.””

Daniel asked the banker another question.

“Has any money been disbursed?””

“Not yet. The transaction was scheduled to close this morning.””

Daniel ended the call.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Ethan sat down again.

“Mom, please. I need you to help me.””

I looked at him.

“What exactly do you want me to do?””

“Tell the bank Dad intended to give us the house.””

“I won't lie.””

“Then authorize the loan against the company.””

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“You don't understand. If this collapses, Brooke's father could sue me.””

“Then you should have thought about that before signing.””

Ethan leaned forward.

“Mom, I'm your son.””

The words hung between us.

I remembered him at seven years old, running through the snow in his little red boots.

I remembered him at seventeen, sitting beside Robert in the hospital room.

I remembered him crying into my shoulder at his father's funeral.

And I remembered him standing in Brooke's doorway the night before, telling me not to embarrass him.

“Yes,” I said.

“You are.””

His eyes softened.

“So help me.””

“I've spent forty-one years helping you. But I won't help you commit fraud.””

He stood.

“Fine. If you won't help, Brooke's father will find another way.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan looked toward the door.

“Nothing.””

“Ethan,” I said.

“What else have you done?””

He hesitated.

Then his phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

“What's wrong?”” I asked.

He showed me the message.

It was from Brooke.

Dad knows everything. Bring Mom's original documents home. We need to handle this before Mercer makes things worse.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at my son.

“Why does your wife want the original documents?””

He said nothing.

Daniel reached across the desk and gently took the phone.

“Margaret, I strongly advise you not to give anyone those originals.””

I nodded.

But Ethan was already heading toward the door.

“I'm going home.””

“Ethan,” I called.

He stopped.

“Tell Brooke I won't be signing anything.””

He looked back at me.

For a moment, I saw the frightened little boy who had once depended on me.

Then his expression hardened.

“You're going to destroy my marriage.””

“No, sweetheart,” I said quietly.

“I'm trying to stop you from destroying your future.””

He left without another word.

Daniel waited until the door closed.

Then he opened another drawer.

“Margaret, there's something else Robert left in my custody.””

He placed a sealed envelope on the desk.

This one had a different message.

Only open if the Harrington family attempts to take control of Collins Holdings.

I stared at the handwriting.

“Daniel, what's inside?””

May you like

He looked at me.

“The reason Robert never trusted Brooke's father.””
