Chapter 7: The Man My Husband Warned Me About

Richard spent the following morning searching through old corporate records.

I sat across from him with Robert's warning beside my coffee.

Never trust Gregory with the land.

The sentence was simple.

But it opened a door to a past I had never known existed.

At ten thirty, Richard placed a thick folder on his desk.

“I found something.””

He turned it toward me.

The first page contained a photograph of three men standing in front of a construction site.

I recognized Robert immediately.

He looked younger, perhaps fifty-five, with dark hair and a broad smile.

The man beside him was Gregory Shaw.

The third man was unfamiliar.

“What is this?”” I asked.

“An old development partnership.””

Richard pointed to the company name.

“Bennett Shoreline Development was established sixteen years ago. Robert was the principal architect. Gregory handled financing and acquisitions.””

“Were they partners?””

“Initially.””

“What happened?””

Richard turned several pages.

“Gregory attempted to redirect funds from a coastal development project. Robert discovered irregularities and withdrew from the partnership.””

I stared at him.

“Did he sue Gregory?””

“No. They settled privately.””

“Why didn't Robert tell me?””

Richard hesitated.

“Perhaps he didn't want to bring the conflict into your home.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Was the land part of that dispute?””

“Yes.””

“Then Gregory knew about the trust?””

Richard nodded.

“He knew about the original land acquisition. What he didn't know, at least initially, was how Robert structured the ownership afterward.””

I leaned back.

“So Ashley and Daniel found him.””

“That's what it appears to be.””

Richard opened another folder.

“There is something else.””

A letter dated six months earlier appeared on the screen.

It was addressed to Daniel.

The sender was Gregory.

The subject line read:

*A Once-in-a-Lifetime Family Opportunity.*

Richard read the email aloud.

Daniel, your father spent years protecting assets that should have been available to the next generation. Your mother has no reason to control such a valuable property indefinitely. We can arrange a transition that benefits everyone.

I felt my stomach turn.

He continued.

Your wife understands the commercial potential. I can help you access the necessary financing and secure the development rights before outside investors become involved.

The message ended with an invitation to meet.

I looked at Richard.

“Daniel knew Gregory was involved.””

“Apparently.””

“Did he know what Gregory had done to Robert?””

“Possibly. We need to ask him.””

I stared at the email.

“Robert trusted almost nobody with his business affairs. Yet he trusted Richard to protect me.””

Richard nodded.

“He made sure the trust documents were properly executed. He also included a provision requiring your personal approval for any transfer or borrowing against the assets.””

“Could Daniel change that?””

“No.””

“Could Gregory?””

“Absolutely not.””

I took a breath.

“Then why are they trying?””

Richard looked at me.

“Because people who are desperate enough sometimes believe a forged document will become legitimate if enough money changes hands.””

That afternoon, Jennifer Walsh called.

“Mrs. Bennett, we have an update.””

I put the phone on speaker.

“What happened?””

“We interviewed the bank's loan officer. He confirmed that Daniel and Ashley presented several documents together.””

“Were they both there?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

Jennifer continued.

“We also obtained correspondence showing that the loan proceeds were distributed among several accounts.””

“Whose accounts?””

“Coastal Legacy Holdings, an account belonging to Patricia Harrison, and an account associated with Gregory Shaw.””

Richard immediately wrote down the information.

“Do you have the amounts?”” he asked.

Jennifer gave him the figures.

I listened in disbelief.

The largest transfer had gone to Gregory.

Three hundred and ten thousand dollars.

Patricia had received two hundred and forty thousand.

Daniel and Ashley's company had retained the remainder.

“Why did Gregory receive so much?”” I asked.

“We're still determining that.””

I thought about the old warning.

“Jennifer, my husband left a note saying never to trust Gregory with the land.””

There was a pause.

“That's important information. Could you provide a copy?””

“Of course.””

After the call, Richard recommended that I change every access code connected to the mansion.

We also arranged for a locksmith to replace the locks.

At five that evening, the doorbell rang.

I looked through the security camera.

Ashley stood outside.

She wasn't alone.

Patricia was beside her, holding a large envelope.

I opened the door but kept the security chain attached.

“What do you want?””

Ashley smiled.

“Can we come in?””

“No.””

Her expression hardened.

“Margaret, this is ridiculous.””

“Then make it brief.””

Patricia stepped forward.

“We've brought something that may help resolve the misunderstanding.””

She lifted the envelope.

I didn't take it.

“What is it?””

“An agreement.””

Ashley smiled.

“It's a settlement proposal. You sign, we all move forward.””

I looked at her.

“Sign what?””

“An authorization allowing Coastal Legacy Holdings to manage the mansion and coordinate the land development.””

I almost laughed.

“You want me to sign another document?””

“It's perfectly legitimate.””

“After the forged power of attorney?””

Ashley's smile disappeared.

“You can't prove that.””

I looked at Patricia.

“Are you aware your daughter received money from the loan?””

Patricia's face tightened.

“That's a private financial matter.””

“Not when it involves my property.””

Ashley stepped closer to the door.

“Listen carefully. We have investors waiting. If you refuse, the entire project collapses.””

“Then let it collapse.””

She stared at me.

“You're throwing away millions of dollars.””

“No. I'm refusing to let strangers steal my home.””

Patricia opened the envelope.

“Margaret, please be reasonable. You're not getting any younger. You should enjoy your retirement. Let Daniel handle the complicated things.””

I looked directly at her.

“My husband spent forty-two years making sure I would never need to depend on someone like you.””

Ashley slammed the envelope against the door.

“You're going to regret this!””

I closed the door.

Then I heard Patricia's voice through the glass.

“You should have taken the money when we offered it!””

I froze.

I opened the door again.

“What money?””

Patricia looked at Ashley.

Ashley shook her head sharply.

But it was too late.

I had heard her.

“What money, Patricia?””

She swallowed.

“Nothing.””

I looked at Ashley.

“How much were you planning to give me?””

Ashley laughed nervously.

“That's not what she meant.””

I turned toward Patricia.

“You said I should have taken the money when you offered it. Who offered it?””

Neither woman answered.

I stepped outside.

“Was Gregory involved?””

Ashley's face changed.

She reached for her mother's arm.

“Come on. We're leaving.””

But Patricia remained frozen.

Finally, she whispered:

“Gregory said you would never agree to the transfer voluntarily.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What transfer?””

Patricia looked at me with frightened eyes.

“He said Daniel would have to make sure you couldn't interfere.””

Ashley grabbed her mother's arm.

“Mom! Stop talking!””

But Patricia continued.

“He told us the power of attorney would be enough. He said once the financing went through, nobody would be able to reverse it.””

Ashley dragged her toward the driveway.

I stood in the doorway, barely breathing.

Then Patricia turned back.

“Margaret, please. We didn't know he was going to use your name without permission.””

I stared at her.

“Then what did you know?””

May you like

Her answer was almost inaudible.

“He told us Robert had hidden something worth twenty million dollars.””
