Chapter 6: The Investigation Begins

For several seconds after the investigator ended the call, I couldn't move.

The basement seemed colder than before.

Robert's letters lay scattered across the table. The property documents, the trust records, and the fraudulent financing agreement were spread around me like pieces of a puzzle I had never wanted to solve.

Richard slowly removed his glasses.

“Margaret, we need to be very careful now.””

I looked at him.

“Are you telling me my son is committing a crime?””

“I'm telling you that the documents suggest someone has been attempting to obtain financial control over assets that don't belong to them.””

“Daniel is my son.””

“I know.””

“He grew up in this house.””

“I know, Margaret.””

I pressed my palms against the table.

“How does a mother investigate her own child?””

Richard's expression softened.

“You don't have to stop loving him to protect yourself from what he's doing.””

That sentence stayed with me.

At eleven the next morning, two investigators arrived at Richard's office.

Thomas Reed was a tall man in his early fifties with a carefully trimmed beard. His colleague, Jennifer Walsh, carried a laptop and several folders.

They asked me to describe everything that had happened.

The unauthorized party.

Ashley's threats.

Daniel's admission about the $800,000 loan.

The forged documents.

The power of attorney.

Jennifer took notes while Thomas examined copies of the paperwork.

“Mrs. Bennett,” Thomas said, “we have reason to believe this was not an isolated incident.””

“What does that mean?””

He turned his laptop toward me.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

It showed Ashley leaving a bank.

“Do you recognize this woman?””

“That's my daughter-in-law.””

“Do you know why she visited the bank on September fourteenth?””

“No.””

Jennifer opened another file.

“She submitted a financial application using your property as collateral.””

I stared at the screen.

“Was it approved?””

“Partially. The institution released an initial amount, but the larger financing request was suspended after a discrepancy was identified.””

“How much was released?””

“Eight hundred thousand dollars.””

I closed my eyes.

Thomas continued.

“The application included an authorization document that purportedly gave Daniel Bennett authority to act on your behalf.””

“But I never gave him that authority.””

“We understand.””

Jennifer placed a document in front of me.

It was a photocopy of the power of attorney.

My name appeared at the bottom.

The signature looked convincing.

But I noticed something immediately.

The capital M in Margaret was too narrow.

My real signature had a wider first stroke.

“That's not my handwriting,” I said.

Jennifer nodded.

“Our forensic examiner will review it.””

I pointed toward the notary section.

“Elaine Porter. She retired years ago.””

Thomas exchanged a glance with Jennifer.

“We've been looking into that.””

“What did you find?””

“Ms. Porter died eighteen months ago.””

I stared at him.

The room went silent.

“Then who notarized this document?””

“That's one of the questions we're investigating.””

Richard leaned forward.

“Is it possible someone used her old notary stamp?””

“That's one possibility.””

I looked at the investigators.

“Who else is involved?””

Thomas closed his folder.

“We're still establishing the full picture. But your daughter-in-law's parents have appeared in several financial records connected to Coastal Legacy Holdings.””

I remembered Patricia's diamond necklace.

The way she had laughed when Ashley shoved my suitcase.

The way she had spoken about my mansion as though she already owned it.

“Did they receive money?””

Jennifer nodded.

“We're examining transfers to several accounts. We can't disclose every detail of an ongoing investigation, but there are transactions that require explanation.””

I looked down.

“Daniel said some of the loan money went to pay their debts.””

Thomas wrote something down.

“Did he tell you that voluntarily?””

“Yes.””

“Do you have that conversation recorded?””

“No.””

“That's all right. Don't contact him about the investigation. If he reaches out, preserve the messages.””

Richard agreed.

After the investigators left, I returned home.

The house felt different.

Every room reminded me of the people who had occupied it without permission.

I walked through the living room and stopped beside Robert's armchair.

The wet towel was gone, but a faint water stain remained on the leather.

I ran my fingers across it.

Then I heard the front door open.

“Mom?””

Daniel.

He walked into the living room carrying a bouquet of white roses.

For one foolish second, my heart lifted.

They were Robert's favorite.

Then I noticed the expression on Daniel's face.

He wasn't there to apologize.

He was there because he needed something.

“Mom, can we talk?””

I remained standing.

“About what?””

“Everything.””

He placed the flowers on the coffee table.

“I know things got out of control.””

“That's one way to describe it.””

He swallowed.

“Ashley is upset.””

I looked at him.

“Is that why you came?””

“No. I came because I want us to fix this.””

“Then start by telling me why you submitted a power of attorney in my name.””

His expression changed.

“Who told you about that?””

I stared at him.

“So it's true.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Mom, you don't understand how complicated this has become.””

“Try me.””

He sat on the sofa.

“Ashley said the documents were legitimate.””

“Did you see me sign them?””

“No.””

“Did you hear me authorize them?””

He looked away.

“No.””

“Then why did you submit them?””

He leaned forward.

“Because the bank needed proof that we had authority to manage the property.””

I felt a chill move through me.

“You knew you didn't have that authority.””

He didn't answer.

I sat opposite him.

“Daniel, how much money did you borrow?””

“Eight hundred thousand.””

“How much went to Ashley's parents?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“About two hundred and forty thousand.””

“And the rest?””

“Business expenses.””

“What business?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“We were developing a luxury hospitality brand.””

“Using my property.””

“Yes.””

“Without my permission.””

He sighed.

“Mom, you have no idea how difficult it is to build something from nothing.””

I stared at him.

“Your father built a successful architectural business from nothing. He never stole someone else's house to do it.””

Daniel stood abruptly.

“Why do you always bring Dad into this?””

“Because he would never have treated me this way.””

His jaw tightened.

“Ashley says you're going to ruin everything.””

I looked at the flowers.

“Your father used to bring me roses every anniversary. He never once made me feel that I had to earn the right to live in my own home.””

Daniel's expression softened for a moment.

“Mom, I made mistakes.””

“Then tell the investigators the truth.””

He shook his head.

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because Ashley will lose everything.””

I looked at him carefully.

“And what about me?””

He said nothing.

I stood.

“Leave, Daniel.””

He picked up his jacket.

At the door, he stopped.

“Mom, you need to understand something. Ashley didn't come up with all of this herself.””

My heart began to beat faster.

“What do you mean?””

He turned around.

“Gregory Shaw introduced us to the investment opportunity. He said there was a way to secure the property before the development company made its offer.””

“Who is Gregory Shaw?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“He used to work with Dad.””

The front door closed.

I stood motionless.

Robert had known Gregory Shaw.

My husband had written his name in the confidential trust documents.

And now my son was telling me that the same man had helped arrange the fraudulent loan.

I hurried downstairs to Richard's office.

When I showed him the message Daniel had sent afterward, he read it twice.

Then he opened Robert's old files.

He searched through several folders before finding a business card.

Gregory Shaw.

Beneath the name was an old company.

Bennett Shoreline Development.

Richard looked at me.

“Margaret, I think we need to find out exactly what happened between your husband and this man.””

He turned the card over.

There was a handwritten note on the back.

Never trust Gregory with the land.
