Chapter 6: The Woman in the Photograph

The photograph trembled between my fingers.

Not because it was old.

Not because it was unexpected.

Because I knew the man standing in it.

My husband.

Thomas Whitmore.

The man who had held my hand through forty years of storms.

The man who kissed my forehead every morning before leaving for work.

The man who cried when our son was born.

And now he was standing beside a woman I had never seen.

A woman who was smiling at him like she knew a version of him I never did.

I looked at Sloan.

“What is this?””

Her expression didn’t change.

“A truth you deserved to know years ago.””

Harrison stepped forward.

“Sloan, stop.””

She turned toward him.

“No.””

Her voice was sharp.

“No more protecting everyone except the person who was actually hurt.””

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

That was when I realized something terrifying.

They weren’t hiding one secret.

They were hiding layers of them.

Like a house built on a cracked foundation.

One small collapse could bring everything down.

I placed the photograph on the table.

“Who is she?””

Sloan looked at Harrison.

Then back at me.

“Her name is Claire Dawson.””

The name meant nothing.

And somehow, that made it worse.

“Was she your father’s affair partner?”” Harrison asked quietly.

I looked at him.

The way he said it told me he already knew.

My stomach tightened.

“You knew about her?””

His face fell.

“Not everything.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That phrase should be printed on your forehead.””

“Mom…”

“No. I’m tired of half-truths.””

I picked up the photograph again.

“Tell me everything.””

Sloan sat down.

For once, she looked exhausted.

Not elegant.

Not untouchable.

Just tired.

“Your husband met Claire through a business deal,” she said.

I stared at her.

“Thomas was faithful to me.””

The words came out automatically.

Like a defense.

Like I was protecting him even now.

Sloan didn’t argue.

“I didn’t say they had a relationship.””

That stopped me.

“What?””

She slid another document across the table.

“This is a paternity report.””

The room went silent.

I looked at the paper.

Then at her.

“No.””

Sloan swallowed.

“Claire had a daughter.””

My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

“And?””

Sloan looked directly at me.

“Thomas was her father.””

The clock on the wall suddenly sounded deafening.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

My entire life rearranged itself in seconds.

A daughter.

Another child.

A secret family.

A piece of my husband’s life I never knew existed.

Harrison looked away.

“You knew.””

I turned to him.

“You knew?””

His silence answered.

I felt something inside me crack.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

Grief.

“You knew my husband had another child?””

Harrison whispered:

“I found out after Dad died.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I didn’t know how.””

I stood.

“How convenient.””

“Mom, I was scared.””

“So was I!””

My voice echoed through the room.

“I buried my husband believing I knew everything about him.””

I pointed at the photograph.

“And you both stood there knowing there was a missing piece of my life.””

Sloan’s expression softened.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.””

I looked at her.

“You forged documents to steal my house.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

“You destroyed my trust.””

“I know.””

“Then don’t tell me you weren’t trying to hurt me.””

For the first time, Sloan had no response.

The next hour was filled with details I never wanted to hear.

Claire had died three years before Thomas.

Her daughter, Lily, had spent years searching for answers about her father.

Thomas had secretly supported her financially.

But he never told me.

Not even once.

Then Daniel found something else.

A letter.

A letter Thomas had written shortly before his death.

The envelope was addressed to me.

My hands shook as I opened it.

My husband’s handwriting stared back at me.

Margaret,

If you are reading this, then I failed to tell you the truth while I was alive.

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

Because even after death…

He was still apologizing.

I forced myself to continue.

I never wanted to hurt you. Claire was someone I knew before I met you. When I discovered she had a daughter, I made a promise to protect her.

Not because I loved Claire. Because I loved my child.

My child.

The words felt like a knife.

But there was more.

I also discovered someone was trying to use Lily’s existence against our family. Someone who knew about the inheritance. Someone who wanted control.

I stopped.

“Control.””

Everyone looked at me.

I turned the page.

The final paragraph was written differently.

As if Thomas had been rushing.

Margaret, trust Daniel. Trust nobody who asks you to give up your home. The person closest to us may not be who they seem.

A chill moved through me.

Because suddenly Sloan’s secret didn’t look like the whole story.

I looked at her.

“Why did you really want my house?””

Her face went pale.

Before she could answer, Harrison’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Then froze.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He slowly lifted his eyes.

“It’s Lily.””

The name hung between us.

The daughter nobody knew.

May you like

And then he whispered:

“She says she knows who tried to destroy your family.””
