Chapter 5: The Secret That Started Everything
I didn’t sleep.
Not because I believed the note.
Because I was afraid I might.
At six in the morning, I drove to Daniel’s office.
I placed the paper on his desk.
“Tell me this is fake.””
He read it carefully.
His expression changed.
“You know something,” I said.
He looked uncomfortable.
“Daniel.””
Finally, he sighed.
“Your husband had a life insurance policy.””
“I know.””
“But there was an investigation.””
My heart stopped.
“What investigation?””
Daniel opened a file.
“Shortly before his death, he changed the beneficiary.””
I stared at him.
“To who?””
Daniel looked at me.
“To Harrison.””
The room spun.
“No.””
“There’s more.””
I didn’t want more.
But secrets don’t care what we want.
“There were questions about whether he understood what he was signing.””
I whispered:
“What are you saying?””
Daniel looked at the file.
“I’m saying someone may have pressured him.””
The first person who came to my mind was Sloan.
But then another thought appeared.
Harrison.
My own son.
That night, I called him.
“Come over.””
He arrived twenty minutes later.
The moment he saw my face, he knew.
“What happened?””
I placed the file on the table.
His expression changed.
“Where did you get that?””
The question was enough.
Not “What is this?””
Not “I don’t understand.””
Where did you get that?
“You knew.””
His mouth opened.
Then closed.
“Mom…”
“You knew about the insurance.””
He looked down.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
“When I was gone?””
Tears filled his eyes.
“No.””
But his voice was weak.
I stepped back.
For years, I had protected this man.
Loved him.
Defended him.
And now I was looking at a stranger wearing my son’s face.
Then the front door opened.
I turned.
Sloan stood there.
Holding a folder.
Her expression was calm.
Almost peaceful.
“You finally found out.””
Harrison looked at her.
“Sloan, why are you here?””
She ignored him.
She looked directly at me.
“I tried to handle this quietly.””
I laughed.
“Quietly?””
She walked closer.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“Then explain.””
She placed the folder on the table.
“I didn’t ruin your birthday because I hated you.””
I stared at her.
“Then why?””
Her eyes moved to Harrison.
Then back to me.
“Because I knew if I didn’t expose the truth…”
She opened the folder.
“…someone else would.””
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of my husband.
Standing beside a woman I had never seen before.
May you like
And written on the back were four words:
*The woman he betrayed.*
