Chapter 8: The Last Night of My Husband's Life

The hospital corridor smelled exactly as I remembered.

Disinfectant.

Coffee.

And something metallic that seemed to cling to every surface.

I had returned to St. Mary's Medical Center only once since Robert died.

That was for a memorial service held by the hospital staff.

Now I was standing in the same building, trying to understand why my son had visited his dying father without telling me.

Claire sat beside me in the waiting area.

She hadn't spoken for ten minutes.

I finally turned toward her.

“What happened that night?””

She rubbed her palms against her jeans.

“Robert called me around midnight.””

“Why?””

“He wanted me to come to the hospital.””

“Was Harrison there?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Robert asked me not to.””

I stared at her.

“What did he say?””

Claire looked toward the reception desk.

“He told me Harrison had come to see him earlier. They argued.””

“About the money?””

“Yes.””

I swallowed.

“What happened during the argument?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Robert told Harrison that he was going to contact the authorities. Harrison begged him not to. He said Daniel had promised to repay the money.””

“And Robert refused?””

“He told him the truth had to come out.””

I looked down.

I remembered that night.

I had been at home, preparing to bring Robert his favorite soup the next morning.

He had called me around 10:00 p.m.

He sounded tired.

But he had told me he loved me.

I had assumed he was simply exhausted.

“Did Harrison threaten him?””

Claire hesitated.

“He raised his voice. Robert's heart monitor started alarming. The nurses came in, and Harrison left.””

I covered my mouth.

“Was Robert all right?””

“He stabilized.””

I stared at the floor.

“And then?””

Claire began crying.

“Robert asked me to come closer. He told me something I have never forgotten.””

“What?””

“He said, 'If my son comes back, don't let him take the blue folder.''”

I looked up.

“The blue folder?””

“Yes. It contained the final transfer agreement.””

“Where is it?””

“I don't know. I thought it was in the storage unit.””

I shook my head.

“It's not.””

Claire looked horrified.

“Then someone has it.””

My phone rang.

Detective Brooks.

I answered immediately.

“Mrs. Whitmore, where are you?””

“At St. Mary's.””

“Please don't leave. I need to speak with you.””

He arrived twenty minutes later.

I explained what Claire had told me.

He listened without interrupting.

When I mentioned Harrison's hospital visit, his expression became serious.

“Did you know he visited his father that night?””

“No.””

“Do you know whether anyone else was present?””

Claire shook her head.

Detective Brooks opened his folder.

“We located an old hospital incident report during our review of the original investigation.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of incident?””

“An argument between a patient and a family member.””

He placed a photocopy on the table.

The report was dated the night before Robert died.

The patient's name was Robert Whitmore.

The visitor was Harrison Whitmore.

I read the description.

Visitor became verbally aggressive following disagreement regarding financial documents. Patient requested visitor leave. Nursing staff intervened.

My eyes blurred.

“Why wasn't I told?””

“The incident was classified as a family dispute. No formal complaint was filed.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Detective Brooks continued.

“There's something else. A nurse made a private note that wasn't included in the original report.””

He turned another page.

Patient stated that his son had threatened to expose a family secret unless financial documents were signed.

I felt cold.

“What family secret?””

Detective Brooks shook his head.

“We don't know.””

I looked at Claire.

She was staring at the note.

Then she began shaking.

“Evelyn…”

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She wiped her face.

“Robert told me about it.””

“About what?””

Claire looked at the detective.

Then back at me.

“Your husband had discovered that Harrison wasn't his biological son.””

The world stopped.

I couldn't hear the receptionist calling someone's name.

I couldn't hear the elevator.

I couldn't even hear my own breathing.

“What did you say?””

Claire started crying.

“Robert found out through an old medical record.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“He confronted you?””

“No. He confronted the man he suspected.””

“Who?””

Claire lowered her eyes.

“Daniel Pierce.””

I stood abruptly.

“That makes no sense.””

Claire continued.

“Robert believed Daniel had been involved with you before your marriage.””

I stared at her.

I felt physically sick.

“That's a lie.””

“I know.””

“Robert knew Harrison was his son.””

“I believe he did. But he wanted to be certain.””

I turned toward the detective.

“Can you prove this?””

Detective Brooks remained quiet.

“We can investigate the claim. But it is not directly related to the financial case unless it was used to influence or threaten someone.””

I sat down again.

My entire marriage was suddenly being dragged into a nightmare.

Daniel had said my husband died with secrets.

Was this the secret?

Was Harrison being manipulated by someone who claimed to be his biological father?

And had Robert discovered something that made him question everything?

My phone vibrated.

A message from Harrison.

*Mom, I need to see you. Alone. Please.*

I stared at the screen.

Detective Brooks noticed.

“Is that him?””

I nodded.

“Don't meet him without someone present.””

I typed a reply.

*Come to my house at six. We will talk with the attorney present.*

His response arrived immediately.

*No. This is about Dad. You need to hear the truth before Sloan destroys everything.*

My fingers went numb.

I looked at Claire.

She was staring at me with a strange expression.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Evelyn, I think I know who Harrison's biological father is.””

I stood.

“Who?””

Claire's lips trembled.

“Your first husband.””

I stared at her.

My first husband had died in a car accident when I was twenty-three.

Robert had married me three years later.

Harrison had been born after Robert and I married.

But Claire was saying something impossible.

I shook my head.

“That can't be true.””

Claire looked at me.

“Your first husband was alive when you met Robert. He didn't die immediately after the accident.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“What are you talking about?””

Claire reached into her bag and removed an old photograph.

It showed a young man standing beside me.

My first husband, Michael.

On the back was a hospital date.

And underneath it, in Robert's handwriting, were six words.

*The truth about Harrison must wait.*

I looked at Claire.

Then at the photograph.

And suddenly the past seemed far more complicated than the present.
