Chapter 7: The Recording That Exposed My Son

I listened to Robert's voice with my eyes closed.

For seventeen years, I had dreamed about hearing him speak again.

I had imagined him telling me that everything was going to be all right.

I had imagined him laughing at one of Harrison's jokes.

I had even imagined him complaining about the old furnace.

But I had never imagined hearing him reveal a betrayal involving our only child.

“Robert,” I whispered.

The recording continued.

“Evelyn, I don't know how much time I have. The doctors say my condition is progressing faster than expected. I've spent the last several weeks trying to protect the company and our family.””

There was a faint rustling sound.

Then he continued.

“Daniel Pierce has been stealing from the business. Richard Whitmore helped him create shell companies, and Sloan has been moving money through her financial advisory firm.””

Claire looked at me.

I pressed the recorder closer.

“But Harrison is the part I cannot explain.””

Robert paused for several seconds.

“Three months ago, I found an email from our son authorizing a transfer of company funds. He believed he was investing in a legitimate property development. Daniel told him it was an opportunity to secure his future.””

My chest tightened.

Robert's voice became quieter.

“Harrison didn't know where the money was coming from at first. But when he discovered the accounts were connected to the family trust, he continued anyway.””

I gripped the recorder.

“How could you?”” I whispered.

Claire stood beside me.

Robert continued.

“I confronted him. He told me he was trying to protect us from losing everything. He said Daniel had promised to return the money with interest.””

A long silence followed.

“Then he asked me to sign a document transferring control of the company to him.””

I stopped breathing.

My husband gave a short, exhausted sigh.

“I refused.””

The recording crackled.

“Evelyn, if Harrison has been involved in this, it doesn't mean he cannot come back from it. But he must face what he has done. Don't confuse protecting him with hiding the truth.””

I wiped my eyes.

Then Robert said something else.

“There is one final thing. The person who introduced Harrison to Daniel was not Sloan.””

Claire stiffened.

I looked at her.

Robert continued.

“It was Claire.””

I turned slowly.

My sister had gone completely still.

The recording continued.

“She believed she was helping our son find a business mentor. She didn't know Daniel's intentions at first. But when she discovered the truth, she came to me.””

I looked at Claire.

She was crying silently.

Robert's voice softened.

“Claire has helped me uncover everything. She is not part of the scheme. She has been trying to protect Harrison, even when I asked her to stop.””

The recording ended with a click.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then Claire covered her face.

“I should have told you.””

I stared at her.

“You introduced Harrison to Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“He was twenty-one. He had just graduated. Daniel was a respected businessman, and Robert had always spoken highly of him before the investigation.””

“But Robert said Harrison was involved.””

Claire nodded.

“I know.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Harrison begged me not to. He said he had made a mistake and was going to fix it.””

I sat on an old wooden crate.

“How much did he steal?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“I don't know.””

“Claire.””

“More than a million dollars.””

I closed my eyes.

The amount was almost too large to understand.

“And you knew?””

“I knew he had made some bad investments. I didn't know the full amount until Robert showed me the records.””

I stood.

“You let me spend seventeen years believing my husband had left everything in order.””

“Robert wanted you protected.””

“Protected from what? My own son?””

Claire started crying harder.

“I thought he would stop. I thought he would confess.””

“And instead?””

“He married Sloan.””

The words hung between us.

I looked at the folder.

Inside were copies of bank transfers, emails, and handwritten notes.

One document caught my attention.

It was an agreement dated six months before Robert died.

The title read:

*CONTINGENCY BENEFICIARY TRANSFER AGREEMENT.*

I scanned the first page.

Then the second.

The document explained that if Harrison participated in fraudulent transfers, his inheritance would be suspended pending an independent investigation.

But there was another clause.

A clause Robert had added shortly before his death.

If Harrison voluntarily disclosed his involvement and returned the misappropriated funds, he could retain a limited beneficiary interest.

I read it twice.

“He gave Harrison a chance.””

Claire nodded.

“He wanted to save him.””

I felt tears running down my face.

Even when Robert was dying, he had been trying to protect our son from the consequences of his own decisions.

But Harrison had continued.

I placed the agreement back inside the folder.

“We need to take this to Detective Brooks.””

Claire nodded.

Before we could leave, a car door slammed outside.

I looked toward the entrance.

A man appeared at the end of the corridor.

Daniel Pierce.

He was in his late sixties, wearing a dark suit and carrying a polished leather briefcase.

He looked directly at me.

“Evelyn.””

I stepped in front of Claire.

“How did you find us?””

He smiled politely.

“Your sister has always been terrible at keeping secrets.””

Claire moved closer to me.

“Daniel, you need to leave.””

He ignored her.

“I understand you've been asking questions.””

“Then you understand why you're not welcome.””

He glanced at the open filing cabinet.

His smile vanished.

“You found the documents.””

I held the folder against my chest.

“Robert kept records.””

“Robert was a sick man. He became paranoid toward the end.””

“He knew you were stealing from him.””

Daniel sighed.

“Your husband was a brilliant businessman. But he was never particularly good at understanding people.””

I looked at him.

“Did you steal from the company?””

He gave a small shrug.

“I made investments. Some succeeded. Some didn't.””

“Using money that didn't belong to you?””

“Money is rarely as simple as you think.””

I stepped closer.

“Did you help Sloan forge my signature?””

His eyes narrowed.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

“Then why are you here?””

He looked toward the door.

“Because I'm trying to prevent a family tragedy.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You're seventeen years too late.””

Daniel opened his briefcase and removed a document.

“Sign this, Evelyn. It's a voluntary resignation from the trusteeship. Harrison will take over, and all outstanding concerns can be handled privately.””

I looked at the document.

Then at him.

“You came all this way to ask me to sign away my husband's legacy?””

“I'm offering you a peaceful solution.””

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“You should think carefully.””

“I have.””

He lowered his voice.

“Your son is in serious trouble. If this investigation continues, he could lose everything.””

I stared at him.

“Then perhaps he should have thought about that before betraying his father.””

Daniel put the document away.

“You don't understand how far this goes.””

“Then explain it.””

He stepped closer.

“Your husband didn't die with all his affairs in order, Evelyn. There are things in those records that could destroy more than Harrison.””

I felt my heart pound.

“What things?””

Daniel looked toward Claire.

Then he smiled.

“Ask your sister what happened during the final forty-eight hours of Robert's life.””

He turned and walked away.

Claire stood frozen.

I grabbed her arm.

“What did he mean?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Claire, don't lie to me.””

She looked into my eyes.

Then she whispered:

“Evelyn, I wasn't the only person who visited Robert in the hospital that night.””

“Who else?””

May you like

Claire's answer was almost inaudible.

“Harrison.””
