Chapter 7: The Man Waiting in My Father's House

The estate looked different at night.

The gravel road was slick from the rain, and the trees surrounding the property moved in the wind.

A security light flickered above the main gate.

I had been here countless times as a child.

My father used to take me fishing in the small pond behind the farmhouse. Mom would bring sandwiches, and we'd spend entire afternoons pretending we were lost explorers.

Now the place looked abandoned.

A large black SUV was parked beside the barn.

Two men in dark jackets were loading equipment into the back.

Mom gripped my arm.

“That's the veterinary generator.””

I looked toward the barn.

“Why are they taking it?””

“Richard's company claims it belongs to the development project.””

Mom hurried toward the men.

“Excuse me!””

One of them turned.

“Ma'am, you need to leave.””

“This equipment belongs to the sanctuary.””

The man checked his phone.

“We have authorization.””

“From whom?””

“Mr. Whitmore.””

Mom stepped in front of the loading ramp.

“You cannot take that.””

The second man approached.

“Please move.””

I stepped between them.

“She's the property owner.””

He laughed.

“Not according to the documents we've been given.””

I took the deed from my jacket.

“Read this.””

He glanced at it.

Then he looked at his colleague.

Neither man moved.

Mom pointed toward the barn.

“There are animals inside. You cannot leave them without power.””

The first man sighed.

“We've been told to clear the building.””

“By tonight?””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“Then call Richard and tell him we're here.””

The man hesitated.

He finally made the call.

A few seconds later, he handed me the phone.

Richard's voice came through.

“Daniel.””

“Stop removing equipment.””

“I'm surprised you came.””

“Stop.””

“You need to understand that the project has legal obligations.””

“The property is protected by a conservation trust.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“Your mother has been playing a dangerous game.””

“She's protecting the estate.””

“She has no idea what she's protecting.””

I glanced toward the farmhouse.

“What did my father bury?””

There was a long silence.

Then Richard said, “Come inside.””

The call ended.

Mom looked at me.

“Daniel, don't go alone.””

“I won't.””

She squeezed my hand.

“Your father trusted Richard once. Don't make the same mistake.””

We walked toward the farmhouse together.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, dust covered the furniture, and the air smelled of damp wood and old paper.

A single lamp was burning in the living room.

Richard stood beside the fireplace.

He had removed his wedding jacket and loosened his tie.

“Good evening,” he said.

I looked around.

“Where's Vanessa?””

“She went home.””

“Home?””

“Our house.””

I stared at him.

“You mean the house we bought together?””

Richard shrugged.

“There's no need to get sentimental.””

Mom stepped forward.

“Richard, what are you doing?””

He looked at her.

“Trying to finish what your husband started.””

“You mean destroying what he built?””

Richard shook his head.

“Your husband was a dreamer. He wanted to save every acre of land and every animal that crossed his path. He didn't understand how business worked.””

Mom's voice trembled.

“He understood more than you ever will.””

Richard smiled.

“That's what he always told himself.””

I stepped forward.

“Show me the original property records.””

Richard studied me.

“Your father was a stubborn man.””

“Show me the records.””

“Do you know why I wanted you to marry Vanessa?””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Because you thought you could get access to the land.””

“Partly.””

“What does that mean?””

Richard walked toward the fireplace.

“Your father created a private trust before he died. The estate wasn't held entirely in his name. Certain documents were never filed publicly.””

I looked at Mom.

She seemed just as confused as I was.

Richard continued.

“Your father believed he could outsmart everyone by hiding the original agreements.””

“Where are they?””

“That's what I've been trying to find.””

I pulled out the small metal key.

Richard's eyes immediately dropped to it.

For the first time, his composure broke.

“Where did you get that?””

“From my mother.””

He stepped toward me.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

“Daniel, you have no idea what that key opens.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked at Mom.

“Did you open the cabinet?””

“No.””

“After all these years?””

“I never had the key.””

Richard's expression changed.

He turned toward the hallway.

“It's in the study.””

I followed him.

The study was a small room with a wooden desk, two bookcases, and a large filing cabinet built into the wall.

Richard pointed toward the bottom drawer.

“Try it.””

I inserted the key.

It turned.

The drawer opened with a metallic click.

Inside were several leather folders.

I removed the first.

It contained old company documents.

The second held property maps.

The third was sealed with a red ribbon.

On its cover were three words.

*The Original Agreement.*

Richard moved closer.

“Give that to me.””

I stepped back.

Mom stood beside the doorway.

“Daniel, read it.””

I untied the ribbon.

The first page listed my father and Richard as business partners.

The second page contained the original ownership agreement.

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Then I reached the final section.

My father had transferred his entire ownership interest into a family trust.

The beneficiaries were listed clearly.

My mother.

And me.

Richard had no ownership rights whatsoever.

But that wasn't the worst part.

Attached to the agreement was a financial audit.

It showed that Richard had secretly transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars from the company over several years.

I looked at him.

“You stole from my father.””

Richard's face darkened.

“I borrowed money.””

“You falsified the accounts.””

“Your father approved those transactions.””

“No, he didn't.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Daniel, listen to me. You have no idea how complicated this became.””

I held up the documents.

“These prove everything.””

Richard suddenly reached for the folder.

Mom shouted.

“Don't you dare!””

He grabbed the papers.

I pulled them back.

Several sheets scattered across the floor.

One slid beneath the desk.

I bent down and picked it up.

It was a handwritten letter from my father.

The date was three days before his death.

I unfolded it.

*If anything happens to me, make sure Daniel knows that the estate was never meant to become a business empire. It was meant to remain a place where people could start over. Richard knows what I discovered. He will do anything to keep it hidden.*

My hands began to shake.

I looked at Richard.

“What did you discover?””

His expression turned cold.

“You should put that letter away.””

I took a step back.

“What happened the night my father died?””

Mom covered her mouth.

Richard stared at me for several seconds.

Then he spoke.

“Your father was going to destroy both our lives.””

“What did you do?””

He didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“There's someone you should speak to.””

He pressed a button.

A moment later, the study door opened.

Vanessa walked inside.

She was no longer wearing her wedding veil.

Her makeup was smudged, and her hands were trembling.

She looked at me.

Then at the letter.

May you like

“Daniel,” she whispered.

“I need to tell you something about your father.””
