Chapter 3: The Money Nobody Was Supposed to Know About
I returned to the reception carrying the envelope.
Vanessa was standing beside her father, Richard, posing for photographs.
She laughed at something he said.
He placed a hand on her shoulder.
For a moment, they looked like the perfect father and daughter.
Then I remembered the bank statement.
One hundred and eighty thousand dollars.
I approached them.
“Richard, can I speak with you?””
He glanced at my face.
“Of course, son.””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
“Daniel, we're taking family photographs.””
“This will only take a minute.””
Richard looked between us.
“What is it?””
I showed him the statement.
His expression changed so quickly that I almost missed it.
Almost.
“Where did you get that?””
“From my mother's car.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“What is that?””
I turned the page toward her.
“Apparently, my mother transferred $180,000 to your father four months ago.””
Vanessa's face went pale.
Richard reached for the document.
“Give me that.””
I pulled it back.
“Why?””
“This is a private financial matter.””
“It's my mother's money.””
Richard lowered his voice.
“Daniel, this is not the place.””
“Then tell me where the place is.””
Vanessa looked around.
“Can you stop embarrassing us?””
I laughed once.
“That's interesting. You seem very concerned about embarrassment tonight.””
Richard took a slow breath.
“Your mother and I have had business dealings.””
“What business dealings?””
“Nothing you need to worry about.””
“Why would my mother give you that much money?””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“Because she invested in a project.””
“What project?””
He glanced toward Vanessa.
She immediately shook her head.
“Dad, don't.””
That was when I knew they were hiding something.
I folded the statement.
“I'm going to ask my mother.””
Richard grabbed my elbow.
“Daniel, listen to me. Don't involve her in this.””
I looked down at his hand.
Then back at his face.
“She's already involved. It's her money.””
He released me.
Vanessa stepped between us.
“Your mother has no business discussing our family's finances.””
I stared at her.
“Our family's finances?””
She pressed her lips together.
“That's not what I meant.””
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
It was Marcus.
“Daniel, where are you?””
“Inside.””
“Come outside. Your mother left something else with me.””
I walked away from Vanessa.
Marcus was waiting near the valet area.
He held a small brown notebook.
“She asked me to give you this if you found the envelope.””
I took it.
“What is it?””
“Read the first page.””
The notebook smelled faintly of lavender and old paper.
My mother's handwriting filled the pages.
Dates. Expenses. Property addresses. Names.
Some entries were simple.
Daisy's medicine: $340.
Roof repair at the south barn: $2,100.
Feed delivery: $680.
Others were different.
Whitmore Development—second payment.
Richard—$180,000.
Promise to repay before December.
I looked at Marcus.
“What's Whitmore Development?””
He shrugged.
“I don't know.””
I flipped to the final page.
There was a handwritten message.
*Daniel, if you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen. Please don't judge Richard until you've heard the whole story. But don't sign anything he gives you.*
My stomach tightened.
“Sign anything?””
Marcus nodded toward the ballroom.
“Your mother said something about paperwork.””
“What paperwork?””
“She didn't explain.””
I turned the page again.
There was a photograph tucked into the back.
It showed my mother standing in front of a large red barn.
Beside her was Richard.
They weren't dressed formally.
They looked younger.
And between them stood a little girl.
Vanessa.
I stared at the photograph.
“Marcus, how long have they known each other?””
“I don't know.””
“Did you know about this?””
“No.””
I looked at the photograph again.
On the back, Mom had written:
*The day Richard promised he would never let the place disappear.*
I felt a chill.
The place.
What place?
I was about to ask Marcus when the ballroom doors opened.
Vanessa hurried toward us.
“Daniel, there you are.””
She looked at the notebook.
“What is that?””
“Something my mother left me.””
“Give it to me.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
Her expression hardened.
“You don't understand what you're looking at.””
“Then explain it.””
She glanced at Marcus.
“Can you leave us alone?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I'm staying.””
Vanessa gave him a cold look.
“Fine.””
She turned back to me.
“Your mother has been involved in a complicated arrangement with my father. It's not what you think.””
“What do I think?””
“That she's some kind of victim.””
I stared at her.
“Why would you say that?””
Vanessa sighed.
“Because she loves playing the helpless woman. She makes people feel guilty. That's how she gets what she wants.””
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“My mother has never asked anyone for anything.””
“Exactly. She makes a show of it.””
I held up the photograph.
“Why are you standing with Richard and my mother in front of a barn?””
Vanessa's eyes widened.
For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely frightened.
“Where did you get that?””
“From my mother's notebook.””
She reached for it.
I pulled it away.
“Why are you in this photograph?””
She stared at me.
Then she looked toward the ballroom.
“Daniel, we need to talk privately.””
“I'm listening.””
“Not here.””
“Then tell me one thing. Did you know my mother gave your father $180,000?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
That silence was enough.
I stepped back.
“You knew.””
She finally spoke.
“Dad was supposed to handle it.””
“Handle what?””
She swallowed.
May you like
Then she whispered six words that changed everything.
“Your mother owns the land we're building on.””
