Chapter 9: The Promise Rachel Made
Daniel arrived at Howard's office forty minutes later.
He looked exhausted.
His shirt was untucked, his tie was loose, and his phone kept vibrating in his hand.
I stood as soon as he entered.
“Sit down.””
He looked at me.
“Marcus—”
“Sit.””
He did.
I placed Rachel's letter on the table.
“Explain this.””
Daniel looked at the document.
For a long moment, he didn't speak.
Then he exhaled.
“Rachel asked me to protect Lily.””
“Why?””
“Because she didn't trust everyone around you.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Howard.
Howard nodded.
“You can tell him.””
Daniel turned back to me.
“Your father.””
I frowned.
“My father died eight years ago.””
“I know.””
“What does he have to do with this?””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Before Rachel died, she discovered that someone had been trying to obtain information about your family's assets. She believed it was connected to a property development group.””
I shook my head.
“Robert Whitmore?””
“Not at first.””
Daniel opened his phone.
He showed me an old photograph.
It was taken at a business dinner.
My father stood beside a man I recognized as Robert Whitmore.
The photograph was dated seven years earlier.
“They knew each other?”” I asked.
“Your father invested in one of Robert's early development projects. It failed.””
I remembered the story.
My father had lost a substantial amount of money in a property venture before his death.
But I had never known Robert Whitmore was involved.
Daniel continued.
“After your father died, Robert began contacting Rachel about the family property in North Carolina. She refused to sell.””
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“She did. You were dealing with your father's estate and trying to keep your company alive. She didn't want to add another problem.””
I looked at the photograph.
“What happened next?””
“Rachel started investigating the people approaching her. She discovered that several of them had connections to Whitmore Family Holdings.””
Daniel paused.
“She asked me to help.””
“Help with what?””
“Protect Lily's trust. She wanted an independent person who could verify any changes to the estate arrangements.””
“And she chose you?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Howard.
“Why wasn't I told?””
Howard answered gently.
“Rachel believed you were already under considerable pressure. She didn't want you to become suspicious of every person in your life.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That worked out well.””
Daniel didn't react.
He reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.
“I have something else.””
He placed it on the table.
It was addressed to me.
Rachel's handwriting.
I stared at it.
“How many letters did she leave?””
“Two,” Daniel said.
“This one was given to me.””
I opened it.
Marcus,
I know you will probably be angry with Daniel for keeping this from you.
Please don't be.
I asked him to remain quiet unless there was a genuine attempt to interfere with Lily's future.
You have always believed that love makes people honest. I admire that about you.
But some people see love as an opportunity.
If you ever meet someone who insists that Lily must become less important for your relationship to work, please remember that the problem is not Lily.
It is the person asking you to make that choice.
I stopped reading.
My eyes blurred.
The letter continued.
There is something I never told you.
During my final months, I received a letter from Robert Whitmore. He wanted to buy the family property. When I refused, he warned me that the land would eventually belong to people who understood its value.
I did not take him seriously at the time.
I should have.
Please protect Lily.
Not because she will inherit money.
Because she is the most precious thing we ever made together.
I love you.
Rachel.
I folded the letter.
Daniel watched me.
“Why didn't you tell me about Robert?””
“Because I didn't have enough evidence. And after Rachel died, you were grieving. I didn't want to drag you into another fight.””
“So you waited?””
“I watched.””
“For how long?””
“Until Vanessa appeared.””
I looked at him.
“You knew something was wrong with her?””
“I didn't trust her from the beginning.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Daniel leaned back.
“Because I didn't have proof. And every time I raised a concern, you defended her.””
I couldn't argue.
He was right.
I had defended Vanessa.
I had called her demanding but harmless.
I had told Daniel she was simply adjusting to becoming part of a family.
I had ignored the way Lily stopped running toward the front door whenever Vanessa came home.
I had mistaken silence for acceptance.
Daniel placed his phone on the table.
“There's something you need to hear.””
He opened an audio file.
The recording began with the sound of a door closing.
Then Vanessa's voice.
“Olivia, did you get the documents?””
A second woman answered.
“Yes. I copied the trust records.””
“Good. And the company payment?””
“Processed.””
“Marcus won't notice?””
“Not unless he checks the detailed account.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Then let's hope he stays distracted.””
Olivia asked, “What about Lily?””
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa said:
“Once she's gone, everything becomes easier.””
I felt sick.
The recording continued.
Olivia spoke again.
“And if Marcus changes his mind?””
Vanessa replied:
“He won't. Not after the wedding. He'll be too embarrassed to admit he made a mistake.””
“And if he finds out?””
Vanessa's voice became colder.
“Then Robert will handle him.””
The recording ended.
I looked at Daniel.
“Where did you get this?””
“Caroline sent it to me last night. She recorded it during a meeting with Vanessa and Olivia.””
“Why didn't she send it to me?””
“She was afraid someone would intercept the message.””
I rubbed my face.
“Is Olivia working with Vanessa?””
“Apparently.””
“Did she take the laptop?””
“Yes. But I managed to freeze her access before she could transfer anything else.””
James had been listening quietly.
He now spoke.
“We need to contact the police and report the unauthorized access. The company payment records, forged documents, and recording provide grounds for a much broader investigation.””
I nodded.
“Do it.””
Then my phone rang.
My mother.
I answered immediately.
“Mom?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Marcus, you need to come home.””
“What happened?””
“Lily is missing.””
Everything stopped.
I stood so quickly my chair fell backward.
“What?””
“I was in the kitchen making lunch. She was watching television in the living room. I came back, and she was gone.””
“Did you call the police?””
“Yes. They're on their way.””
“Did anyone come to the house?””
My mother began crying.
“There's a car outside. A woman said she was from the hotel and needed to speak with Lily.””
I felt cold.
“Did you let her inside?””
“No. I told her you hadn't mentioned anything.””
“Good. What happened?””
“She said she had a message from you. Then she showed Lily something through the window.””
“What?””
“A photograph.””
I closed my eyes.
“What photograph?””
“The one of you and Lily at the park. She told Lily you were waiting for her.””
My throat tightened.
“Did Lily go outside?””
My mother started sobbing.
“I told her not to. I went to lock the back door. When I came back, she was gone.””
I was already moving toward the exit.
“Mom, listen to me. Stay inside. Don't touch anything.
The police are coming. I'm on my way.””
I ended the call.
James grabbed his coat.
Daniel followed.
Howard stood.
“I'll contact the trust's security team.””
I ran toward the elevator.
My phone rang again.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Where is my daughter?””
A woman's voice came through.
Calm.
Almost cheerful.
“Mr. Hayes, please don't panic.””
“Who is this?””
“Someone who can help you.””
“Where is Lily?””
“She's safe.””
“Put her on the phone.””
“Not yet.””
I felt my heart pounding.
“Listen carefully. If you have my daughter, you will return her immediately.””
The woman sighed.
“Your daughter is very upset. She believes you're coming to take her home.””
“Because I am.””
“Mr. Hayes, you need to understand that this arrangement was always intended to be temporary.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who are you?””
“Linda Carter.””
The elevator doors opened.
I stepped inside.
“Put Lily on the phone.””
“First, you need to stop the police investigation.””
“No.””
“Then I can't guarantee when you'll see her again.””
I felt Daniel grab my shoulder.
He had heard enough.
James mouthed something.
Stay calm.
I forced myself to breathe.
“What do you want?””
“A meeting.””
“Where?””
“An address will be sent to you.””
“And Lily?””
“You'll see her when you arrive.””
The call ended.
A message appeared.
It contained an address outside the city.
I showed James.
He immediately called the police.
Daniel looked at me.
“Marcus, we are getting her back.””
I stared at the address.
“I'm going with them.””
James shook his head.
“No. The police will handle the recovery.””
“I won't sit in a car while someone has my daughter.””
“Marcus, listen to me. If you go there alone, you could put Lily in more danger.””
I clenched my jaw.
Then my phone vibrated again.
A video message.
I opened it.
Lily was sitting on a small sofa.
Her face was pale.
Her curls were tucked behind her ears.
She looked directly at the camera.
“Daddy?””
I nearly collapsed.
“I'm here, sweetheart.””
But she couldn't hear me.
She looked toward someone standing outside the frame.
Then she whispered:
“Daddy, I didn't go with the lady.””
A hand reached into the frame.
Lily flinched.
Then the video ended.
A final message appeared.
*Come alone if you want your daughter back.*
I looked at James.
He was already speaking to the police.
Daniel took my phone.
“Marcus, there's something you need to know.””
“What?””
He pointed to the video details.
“The message didn't come from Linda's number.””
I stared at the screen.
“Whose number?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Olivia's.””
My executive assistant.
The woman who had helped Vanessa access my company accounts.
The woman who knew where Lily lived.
The woman who knew my daughter's routines.
I looked at the address again.
Then I understood.
May you like
Vanessa hadn't been working alone.
And the person holding my daughter might be someone who had stood in my office for six years, smiling, while I trusted her with every secret of my life.
