Chapter 8: The Woman Rachel Trusted

The following morning, I arrived at the offices of Bennett Private Trusts with James and a folder containing every document we had recovered.

I hadn't slept.

Lily had spent the night with my mother, and I had stayed in the guest room at her house.

At three in the morning, I found myself standing outside Lily's bedroom.

She was asleep beneath her pink blanket.

Her uneven curls rested against the pillow.

I had wanted to cry.

Instead, I sat beside her bed until sunrise.

Now I stood in a quiet office overlooking downtown, waiting for Howard Bennett.

He was seventy-two, with silver hair and a walking stick.

He had known Rachel's family for decades.

When he entered, he shook my hand.

“Marcus.””

“Howard.””

He looked at the folder.

“I wish we were meeting under better circumstances.””

“So do I.””

He sat down.

“James explained the situation. I have reviewed the documents submitted to our office.””

“Who forged my signature?””

Howard opened a file.

“We don't know yet. But the request was submitted through an account that appeared to belong to you.””

“Did anyone verify it?””

“We attempted to contact you using the telephone number listed on the application.””

I shook my head.

“That isn't my number.””

Howard adjusted his glasses.

“That's what concerned us.””

He turned the file around.

The contact information listed a number belonging to Whitmore Family Holdings.

James leaned forward.

“So the application was submitted using Mr. Hayes's name but a telephone number controlled by the Whitmore family?””

“Correct.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“What were they trying to achieve?””

Howard looked at me.

“Your late wife anticipated that someone might eventually try to influence Lily's inheritance.””

I froze.

“What?””

He reached for another folder.

“Rachel was very particular about the trust arrangements.””

He placed a sealed envelope on the desk.

It had my name written on the front.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Rachel's.

My throat tightened.

“Where did you get this?””

“Rachel gave it to me shortly before she died. She instructed me to release it only if someone attempted to challenge Lily's beneficial rights or interfere with the trust.””

I stared at the envelope.

Rachel had written:

*For Marcus, if he ever needs to protect our daughter.*

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Marcus,

If you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.

I know how much you love Lily. I also know you sometimes trust people because you want to believe the best in them.

Please remember that being a good person does not mean allowing someone else to make decisions about our daughter without your knowledge.

Lily's future must always remain hers.

I have arranged for her inheritance to be protected independently. No spouse, guardian, or family member should ever be able to access it for personal reasons.

If anyone attempts to change those arrangements, ask Howard to review the original trust instructions.

There is one more thing.

I asked Howard to preserve a separate provision for Lily. It concerns a property that belonged to my grandmother.

You may not know about it.

But Lily does.

She was too young when I first showed her, but I hope one day you will understand why I wanted it kept in the family.

Take care of our little girl.

And please, Marcus, never let anyone convince her that she is difficult to love.

Rachel.

I couldn't read the final line without my vision blurring.

James remained silent.

Howard waited.

After a moment, I folded the letter carefully.

“What property did Rachel mean?””

Howard smiled faintly.

“An old estate outside Asheville. It belonged to her grandmother.””

“Rachel never mentioned it.””

“She wanted to preserve it for Lily. It includes the house, surrounding land, and several investment accounts.””

“How much is it worth?””

“Approximately four million dollars, though the value isn't the point.””

I looked at him.

“What is?””

Howard leaned forward.

“The property is protected by a separate family trust. Lily becomes its sole beneficiary when she turns twenty-five. Until then, it cannot be sold or transferred without independent authorization.””

James examined the documents.

“Could Robert Whitmore access it?””

“No.””

“Could Vanessa?””

“No.””

“Could Marcus?””

Howard shook his head.

“Not for personal use. He can approve certain expenses for Lily's benefit, but he cannot take ownership.””

I leaned back.

Suddenly, the pieces began fitting together.

Vanessa hadn't simply wanted to become my wife.

She had wanted control over my household, my company, and eventually the financial arrangements surrounding Lily.

But the property had one additional detail.

“Howard,” I said, “why would Robert Whitmore care about an estate in North Carolina?””

Howard hesitated.

“Because the property has a development restriction that expires next year.””

James looked up.

“What kind of restriction?””

“The land sits near a growing commercial district. Rachel's grandmother established a conservation covenant that prevents major development until the next review period.””

I stared at him.

“And Robert wants to develop it?””

Howard nodded.

“His company has approached several landowners in the area.””

My jaw tightened.

“Did he approach Rachel's family?””

“Three years ago. Rachel refused.””

James opened his notebook.

“Did Robert know the land belonged to Lily?””

Howard nodded.

“He knew.””

I stood.

“So this was never just about the inheritance.””

Howard shook his head.

“No. It appears someone wanted to remove the person whose consent would eventually matter.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from Caroline.

*I have another recording. It's from a meeting Vanessa attended with her father. I think you need to hear it.*

I called her.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Can you send it to James?””

“Yes. But Marcus, there's something else.””

“What?””

“I found the original invoice for the residential placement arrangement.””

“Why is that important?””

“Because the payment wasn't made by Whitmore Family Holdings.””

I looked at James.

“Who paid?””

Caroline hesitated.

“Your company.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“My company?””

“Yes. The invoice was charged to an administrative account under Hayes Construction.””

“That account requires my authorization.””

“I know.””

James took the phone.

“Caroline, can you send us the invoice and payment details immediately?””

“I'm sending them now.””

He ended the call.

A moment later, the invoice arrived.

The payment had been made through a company account used for executive expenses.

The authorization code belonged to my office.

I stared at the screen.

“Who has access to that account?””

James examined the payment details.

“Your financial controller. Your executive assistant. And anyone with the administrator's credentials.””

I frowned.

My financial controller was Daniel.

My executive assistant was Olivia Grant.

Olivia had worked for me for six years.

She had attended Rachel's funeral.

She had helped organize Lily's birthday parties.

She had been the person who recommended Vanessa's wedding planner.

I looked at James.

“Olivia.””

He didn't answer.

Instead, he studied the invoice.

Then he noticed something.

“Marcus, look at the authorization timestamp.””

I leaned closer.

The payment had been approved at 8:42 p.m. on a Tuesday.

I remembered that evening.

I had been at home with Lily.

I hadn't used my office computer.

But the payment system had recorded the transaction as coming from my office.

James looked at me.

“Who was in the building that night?””

I thought carefully.

Then I remembered.

Olivia had stayed late.

She had told me she needed to finish the quarterly reports.

I called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“Marcus?””

“Where's Olivia?””

“At the office, I think.””

“Don't confront her. Don't tell her I've called. I need you to secure the finance records and preserve the access logs.””

“Why?””

“Because someone has been using my company to finance a plan to remove my daughter.””

Silence.

Then Daniel said, “I'll handle it.””

I ended the call.

Howard closed Rachel's file.

“Marcus, there is one more thing I think you should know.””

I turned.

“What?””

He removed a final document from his drawer.

It was a letter written by Rachel's grandmother.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

*If anyone attempts to remove Lily from her father or interfere with her inheritance, notify the person named in the sealed family instruction.*

Below it was a name.

Not Vanessa.

Not Robert.

Not Ethan.

It was someone I knew.

Someone I had trusted for years.

*Daniel Reeves.*

My best man.

The man who had stood beside me on my wedding day.

And the man who had told me he would handle the guests when I canceled the ceremony.

I stared at the name.

“Why is Daniel listed here?””

Howard looked troubled.

“Because Rachel appointed him as the emergency protector of Lily's interests if she ever believed you were being manipulated.””

My mind raced.

“Why didn't he tell me?””

Howard shook his head.

“Perhaps he was waiting for the right moment.””

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Marcus, we have a problem.””

“What happened?””

“Olivia is gone.””

“Gone where?””

“She left the office twenty minutes ago. Security says she took a company laptop.””

I closed my eyes.

Then Daniel said something else.

“She also accessed your personal files.””

“What files?””

“The ones containing Lily's birth certificate, medical records, and trust documents.””

I looked at Howard's letter.

The name Daniel Reeves seemed to burn through the paper.

“Daniel,” I said slowly, “I need you to tell me something.””

“What?””

“Why did Rachel name you as Lily's emergency protector?””

The silence on the other end lasted several seconds.

May you like

Then Daniel answered.

“Because she knew this might happen.””
