Chapter 9: The Birthday Dinner That Became a Reckoning

Three weeks passed.

During those three weeks, Camille did not return to the family home.

She moved her personal belongings into Nia's condominium and began the process of separating her finances from Derrick's.

Rebecca filed formal disputes with the lenders.

The insurance company reopened the beneficiary transfer.

The bank placed restrictions on the suspicious accounts.

And Thomas began a full review of the family trust.

But the investigation was only beginning.

Vanessa eventually agreed to meet Jason.

She admitted that Patricia had used her account to receive transfers from Reed Family Holdings.

She claimed she believed the money was repayment for a loan.

Jason asked her why she had never mentioned it.

Vanessa cried.

Then she admitted something worse.

She had known the money came from Camille's inheritance.

She had also known Patricia was planning to announce the commercial property acquisition at the birthday dinner.

But she had said nothing.

When Jason asked why, Vanessa replied:

“Because I thought Camille would never find out.””

The marriage between Jason and Vanessa began falling apart that afternoon.

Meanwhile, Derrick became increasingly desperate.

He called Camille repeatedly.

He sent long emails about love, loyalty, and forgiveness.

He even sent flowers to Nia's condominium.

Camille returned them.

Then, on a Thursday morning, Patricia called.

Her voice was unusually soft.

“Camille, I think we need to talk.””

Camille was sitting at her kitchen table, reviewing trust documents.

“About what?””

“About the family.””

“What family?””

Patricia sighed.

“Don't be childish.””

Camille closed the folder.

“What do you want?””

“I want everyone to sit down and resolve this before it gets out of hand.””

“The investigation is already underway.””

“Exactly. That's why we need to stop.””

Camille waited.

Patricia continued.

“I've spoken to Derrick. He thinks we should have a family meeting.””

“Why?””

“To clear up misunderstandings.””

Camille almost laughed.

“Patricia, there are forged documents, unauthorized transfers, and nearly two million dollars in attempted withdrawals. Those aren't misunderstandings.””

Patricia's voice sharpened.

“You're enjoying this.””

“No.””

“You've always wanted to control everything.””

“No, Patricia. I've always wanted to be treated like a person.””

Silence.

Then Patricia said, “Your father-in-law would never have wanted this family torn apart.””

Camille looked down at Raymond's letter.

“Then you should have respected what he left behind.””

Patricia hung up.

Two days later, Camille received a formal invitation.

It was from the restaurant where the birthday dinner had taken place.

The same private dining room.

The same table.

The same restaurant manager.

The invitation requested her attendance at a family reconciliation dinner.

Derrick had arranged it.

The note at the bottom read:

Let's put everything behind us and remember what matters.

Camille showed it to Thomas.

He read it twice.

“Do you want to go?””

She considered the question.

“Yes.””

Thomas raised an eyebrow.

“Why?””

“Because I want to hear what they say when they think everyone is watching.””

Rebecca leaned forward.

“If you attend, I recommend that you do not discuss settlement terms or make any financial commitments.””

“I won't.””

Thomas nodded.

“We'll arrange for counsel to be present nearby. If you choose to record anything, we need to ensure it's done lawfully.””

Camille agreed.

The dinner was scheduled for Saturday at seven.

At 6:55 p.m., Camille entered the restaurant.

She wore a simple black dress and carried a small leather folder.

No expensive jewelry.

No designer handbag.

No elaborate preparations.

She had nothing to prove.

The hostess led her toward the private dining room.

The doors opened.

Patricia sat at the center of the table.

Derrick was beside her.

Jason sat at the far end, alone.

Vanessa was absent.

Lauren was also there.

Camille stopped.

“I thought this was a family dinner.””

Patricia smiled.

“It is.””

“Then why is Lauren here?””

Derrick stood.

“Camille, please. Let's not start.””

Camille looked at him.

“I'm not starting anything.””

She took the empty chair opposite Patricia.

The restaurant manager approached.

“Good evening, Mrs. Reed. Would you care for your usual sparkling water?””

Camille smiled.

“Yes, thank you.””

Patricia watched the exchange.

Then she spoke.

“I suppose you've enjoyed making everyone uncomfortable.””

Camille unfolded her napkin.

“Not particularly.””

“Derrick tells me you're refusing to cooperate.””

“That's correct.””

Patricia sighed dramatically.

“This family has been through enough.””

Camille looked at her.

“Then perhaps we should discuss what happened.””

Derrick leaned forward.

“Can we please keep this civil?””

Camille nodded.

“Of course.””

Patricia lifted her glass.

“Good. Because I want to apologize.””

Camille looked up.

The words seemed so unexpected that even Jason raised his head.

Patricia continued.

“I may have spoken too harshly at my birthday dinner. I was emotional. I didn't intend to hurt you.””

Camille waited.

Patricia lowered her glass.

“But you also need to understand that this family has responsibilities. Raymond left a complicated estate, and Derrick was trying to protect everyone.””

“By transferring my inheritance?””

Patricia's expression tightened.

“That's what we're here to discuss.””

Camille looked at Derrick.

“Did you authorize the beneficiary change?””

He shook his head.

“Not directly.””

“Did you ask Lauren to create the video verification?””

Lauren shifted in her chair.

“That's a serious accusation.””

Camille turned toward her.

“Then answer the question.””

Derrick interrupted.

“Camille, we can settle this.””

“How?””

“We'll return some of the money.””

Camille stared at him.

“Some?””

Derrick looked frustrated.

“We need time.””

“How much time?””

“Six months.””

Camille shook her head.

“No.””

Patricia placed her hand on Derrick's arm.

“Please understand. The company has debts.””

“Then the company should pay them.””

“You're being unreasonable.””

Camille looked at her.

“You tried to take $1.2 million from a trust you don't control.””

Patricia's face turned red.

“That money was meant for the family!””

“Raymond's attorney says otherwise.””

Patricia leaned forward.

“You think that lawyer cares about you? He's been feeding you lies!””

Jason finally spoke.

“Mom, stop.””

Patricia turned sharply.

“Don't you dare.””

Jason placed his hands on the table.

“I signed the document you gave me. I didn't understand what it was. But I know Dad never wanted this.””

Patricia's expression changed.

“Jason, you have no idea what you're talking about.””

“I read Dad's letter.””

The room went silent.

Derrick looked at him.

“What letter?””

“The one Dad gave me.””

Patricia's eyes widened.

“Where is it?””

“With Thomas.””

She looked toward Derrick.

He stood abruptly.

“This is ridiculous.””

Camille remained seated.

“Why?””

“Because we're discussing private matters in a restaurant.””

She looked around.

The private dining room was full of people again.

Two cousins had been invited.

An aunt sat beside Patricia.

An uncle was near the window.

The restaurant manager stood discreetly by the door.

Camille gave a small smile.

“Interesting. You didn't seem concerned about privacy when you told me to leave in front of eighteen relatives.””

Patricia slammed her hand on the table.

“Enough!””

A waiter carrying a tray stopped in the doorway.

Camille continued calmly.

“I didn't come here to argue. I came because Derrick said he wanted to make things right.””

Derrick sat down.

“I do.””

“Then tell everyone what happened to Raymond's money.””

He looked at Patricia.

She shook her head almost imperceptibly.

Derrick swallowed.

“The insurance money was moved into the family company.””

“Without my permission?””

He hesitated.

“Yes.””

“And the signature?””

“We believed it was a necessary administrative step.””

Camille looked at him.

“Did you create it?””

Derrick's jaw tightened.

“I didn't personally create the video.””

“Did you know Lauren was doing it?””

Silence.

Lauren looked at Derrick.

He looked at Patricia.

Then he said, “I knew she was helping with the verification.””

Camille nodded slowly.

“And the $600,000 loan application?””

“That was a business proposal.””

“Using my name?””

“I thought you'd agree eventually.””

Camille stared at him.

“You thought I'd agree after you submitted it?””

Derrick rubbed his forehead.

“Camille, I was trying to save the company.””

“Why?””

“Because it was all we had.””

She looked around the table.

Then she asked the question that had been waiting in her chest for weeks.

“Was I ever your wife, Derrick? Or was I just the person you planned to use whenever your family needed money?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Patricia jumped in.

“This is exactly why I didn't want you involved in the estate. You make everything personal.””

Camille turned toward her.

“It became personal when you stole from me.””

Patricia stood.

“You ungrateful woman!””

Jason rose too.

“Mom, sit down.””

“Don't tell me what to do!””

“You told Camille she didn't belong at your birthday dinner. But you were happy to spend her money.””

Patricia stared at him.

“After everything I've done for you—”

“You used my signature too.””

Her face went pale.

Jason continued.

“I saw the emails. I know you wanted me to sign that amendment. You knew Dad hadn't approved it.””

Patricia's mouth trembled.

Then she looked toward Lauren.

“You told me everything was handled.””

Lauren's face changed.

“Don't put this on me.””

Derrick turned.

“Lauren, stop.””

But Lauren was already reaching into her portfolio.

She removed a stack of printed emails.

“I have proof of what I was instructed to do.””

Derrick went still.

Patricia looked horrified.

“What are you doing?””

Lauren placed the papers on the table.

“I am not going to take the blame for everything.””

Camille watched her.

Lauren turned toward her.

“Derrick told me the money was already authorized. He said you had agreed to the transfer.””

“That isn't true.””

“I know that now.””

Rebecca had advised Camille not to negotiate in the room.

She had not told her she couldn't listen.

Camille looked at the documents.

“What's in those emails?””

Lauren swallowed.

“The original instructions for the insurance transfer. The video verification. And the plan to move money from the trust before you received access.””

Derrick stood.

“Give me those.””

Lauren pulled the papers away.

“No.””

His face darkened.

“Lauren.””

She looked at Camille.

“I also have something else.””

She reached into her portfolio and pulled out a small flash drive.

“There's a recording.””

Patricia looked toward the door.

“Don't.””

Lauren placed the drive on the table.

“It's from the night before the birthday dinner.””

Camille looked at her.

“What recording?””

Lauren swallowed.

“Patricia and Derrick discussing what they would do if you refused to leave the family.””

Then Lauren pressed play on her phone.

Patricia's voice filled the room.

“If Camille finds out about the trust, we need to make sure she can't stop the transfer.””

Derrick answered.

“She won't. She trusts me.””

And Patricia replied:

“Then make sure she keeps trusting you until the money clears.””

Camille sat perfectly still.

The recording continued.

Then Derrick said something that made every person at the table turn toward him.

“Once the divorce is finalized, she won't have any claim on what we took.””
