Chapter 8: The Brother Who Finally Spoke

Camille found Jason sitting alone in his car outside a grocery store in Sandy Springs.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled, his eyes were red, and a half-empty coffee cup sat in the passenger seat.

When Camille approached, he lowered the window.

“Hey.””

“Hi.””

He looked toward the parking lot.

“Did you bring anyone?””

“No.””

“Good.””

Camille opened the passenger door and sat down.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Jason said, “I think I'm in trouble.””

Camille looked at him.

“What happened?””

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“I signed something for Mom.””

Camille felt her stomach tighten.

“What?””

“The trust amendment.””

She stared at him.

“Thomas showed me the document. Your signature wasn't on it.””

“I know.””

“Your name wasn't even listed as a beneficiary.””

Jason nodded.

“I didn't understand what it was.””

“Then why did you sign?””

He looked down.

“Mom told me it was just a property management authorization. She said Dad had wanted me to help with the family business.””

Camille took a breath.

“Jason, did you read it?””

“Not properly.””

“Did you ask anyone?””

“No.””

“Did Derrick tell you to sign?””

Jason looked at her.

“He was there.””

Camille leaned back.

“What exactly happened?””

Jason stared through the windshield.

“About six months before Dad died, Mom called me to the house. Derrick was there with Lauren. They had a folder full of paperwork. Mom said Dad was getting confused about the properties and needed help organizing things.””

Camille listened.

“She said the family had to protect the estate before Dad changed his mind about selling anything. Derrick told me it was routine.””

“Was Raymond alive then?””

“Yes.””

“Did he know about the papers?””

Jason shook his head.

“I don't think so.””

Camille looked at him.

“Why would you sign something without asking him?””

Jason's voice cracked.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing everything.””

He turned toward her.

“After Dad died, Mom told me the estate was almost bankrupt. She said Derrick had been keeping the properties running and that everyone needed to cooperate.””

Camille was quiet.

Jason continued.

“I had just started working again. Mom was paying part of my rent. I didn't want to upset her.””

Camille remembered how often Jason had looked uncomfortable at family gatherings.

How quickly he had gone silent whenever Patricia raised her voice.

She understood his fear.

But she also understood the consequences.

“Jason, your signature appears on a document that may have been used to misrepresent who controlled the trust.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“Did you receive any money?””

“No.””

“Did anyone promise you money?””

Jason hesitated.

“Mom said I would eventually get a share of the shopping center.””

Camille looked at him.

“Which shopping center?””

“The one near Roswell.””

“That property belongs to Raymond's trust.””

“I know that now.””

He reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a manila envelope.

“I brought something.””

Camille opened it.

Inside were several printed emails.

The first was from Patricia to Lauren.

The second was from Derrick to Jason.

The third was from Lauren to a private lender.

Camille read the last one.

We have a temporary trustee authorization. Once the amendment is accepted, Patricia will be able to approve the financing. The remaining paperwork can be completed after the initial transfer.

Camille looked up.

“Where did you get these?””

“Dad's old computer. I found them in a backup folder.””

“Did you copy everything?””

“Most of it.””

“Did you send anything to Derrick?””

“No.””

Jason swallowed.

“Camille, there's something else.””

She waited.

“Mom told me the reason she wanted you away from the birthday dinner.””

Camille frowned.

“What?””

“She wanted to announce something.””

“What?””

Jason looked at her.

“She planned to tell everyone that Derrick was buying the Buckhead commercial building.””

Camille stared.

“Buying?””

“That's what she said. She wanted the family to celebrate the acquisition.””

“But Raymond's trust owns that building.””

“I know.””

Camille looked at the documents again.

A plan was beginning to take shape.

Patricia wanted to present herself as the person controlling the family assets.

Derrick wanted financing.

Lauren had prepared paperwork.

Jason had unknowingly signed something that could be used to support their claims.

And Camille had been pushed out because her presence might have complicated the announcement.

“Did Patricia know I was the successor trustee?”” Camille asked.

Jason shook his head.

“I don't think so.””

“Then why was she so determined to make me leave?””

Jason looked uncomfortable.

“Because she had another announcement.””

“What announcement?””

He took a deep breath.

“Derrick was going to tell everyone he was separating from you.””

Camille felt the words strike her chest.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

“Separating?””

Jason nodded.

“Mom said it would be easier to announce it after the birthday dinner. She told Derrick that once you were gone, they could move forward without you interfering.””

Camille stared at him.

“So he was planning to divorce me?””

“I don't know if the papers were filed.””

“But he was planning it.””

Jason nodded.

She looked out the windshield.

The humiliation at the restaurant suddenly made sense.

The moved place card.

The public rejection.

The insistence that she leave.

They hadn't simply wanted her gone for the evening.

They had wanted her out of the family before revealing their plans.

And perhaps before she discovered what they had done.

“Why are you telling me this now?”” Camille asked.

Jason's eyes filled.

“Because Dad warned me.””

“What did he say?””

Jason reached into the envelope again.

This time, he pulled out a handwritten letter.

The paper was yellowed.

The handwriting was unmistakably Raymond's.

Jason handed it to her.

“Dad gave me this two weeks before he died. He told me to keep it safe and only open it if Mom started moving the properties without telling anyone.””

Camille unfolded it.

The first line made her eyes sting.

Jason, if you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped I would never see.

She continued.

Your mother loves the appearance of security more than the responsibility of protecting what she has. Your brother has spent years confusing confidence with competence. I have tried to help them both, but I cannot allow them to gamble away what I worked my entire life to build.

Camille paused.

Then she read the next paragraph.

There is one person I trust to protect this family without using it as a weapon. That person is Camille.

Her vision blurred.

*She has shown me kindness when there was nothing to gain. She has never asked for recognition. I want her to understand that the trust is not a reward for being a good daughter-in-law.

It is a responsibility. I hope she will accept it.*

At the bottom was another sentence.

If Derrick or Patricia tells you that Camille is trying to steal the family inheritance, ask them why they were willing to hide her rightful share in the first place.

Camille folded the letter.

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Jason wiped his eyes.

“I should have told you sooner.””

“Yes,” Camille said quietly.

“You should have.””

“I know.””

“But you can still help.””

He nodded.

“I'll give Thomas everything.””

“Are you prepared to testify about what you signed?””

Jason swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Even if Patricia gets angry?””

He looked at her.

“She's already angry.””

Camille almost smiled.

“Then perhaps it's time to stop being afraid of her.””

Jason nodded.

They sat in silence for another minute.

Then Camille's phone rang.

Thomas.

She answered.

“Hello?””

“Mrs. Reed, I need you to come to the office. The bank has completed its preliminary review of the video verification.””

“What did they find?””

“The recording was generated using footage from a public event.””

Camille frowned.

“What public event?””

“A charity gala held last year. You gave a short speech at the event.””

Camille remembered.

It had been a fundraiser for a women's shelter.

She had spoken for approximately four minutes.

Someone had apparently extracted her face and voice from that recording.

“Who submitted the manipulated video?””

Thomas paused.

“The account used to upload it belongs to Lauren Whitmore.””

Camille closed her eyes.

“Of course.””

“There's more.””

“What?””

“The bank's internal logs show that the verification request was initiated from a device registered to Derrick Reed.””

Camille looked at Jason.

He had heard enough to understand.

Thomas continued.

“We also recovered a message from Derrick to Lauren.””

“What does it say?””

“'Use the gala footage. She won't know until the transfer clears.''”

Camille felt her hands go cold.

Thomas paused.

“Mrs. Reed, the evidence is becoming difficult to explain away as a misunderstanding.””

Camille looked at Raymond's letter in her lap.

“No,” she said.

“It isn't.””

Then Thomas added one final detail.

“The bank has also identified a third-party account that received a portion of the stolen insurance money.””

“Whose account?””

“An account belonging to a woman named Vanessa Reed.””

Camille blinked.

“Jason's wife?””

“Yes.””

Jason looked horrified.

“That can't be right.””

Thomas continued.

“Approximately $32,000 was transferred into her account over several months.””

Camille looked at Jason.

He shook his head.

“I didn't know.””

But his expression told her something else.

He was beginning to suspect that the betrayal went much deeper than his mother and brother.

And when he opened his phone to call Vanessa, she didn't answer.

Instead, a message appeared.

*Vanessa:* I know what you're looking for. Don't involve me.
