Chapter 9: The Brother Who Came Back From the Dead

Marcus arrived at the bank with Detective Brooks and two investigators shortly after 8 p.m.

Thomas Whitaker was waiting in a private office.

He placed a small metal key on the table.

“Your father instructed me never to open this without you present.””

Marcus stared at it.

“What's inside?””

“Documents, photographs, and a recording.””

Whitaker opened the safe deposit box.

Inside were three envelopes.

One was labeled *MARCUS*.

Another was labeled *ELEANOR*.

The third had no name.

There was also a small leather notebook.

Marcus opened the first envelope.

A handwritten letter lay inside.

He recognized his father's writing immediately.

Marcus, if you're reading this, then your mother has failed to keep the truth buried.

His hands trembled.

He continued.

I loved you from the moment I first held you. But I need you to understand that the family you know was built on a lie.

Marcus stopped.

Detective Brooks watched him carefully.

“Do you want to continue?””

He nodded.

The letter continued.

Before you were born, Eleanor and I adopted a little boy. His name was Daniel. I loved him as my own.

Marcus looked up.

“Daniel?””

The detective frowned.

“Your CFO?””

“No. Another Daniel.””

He continued reading.

Eleanor became frightened that our adopted son would inherit part of the family estate. She arranged for him to be moved to another family without my consent. I searched for him for years.

Marcus's throat tightened.

When I finally found him, he was twenty-five years old. I wanted to bring him home. Eleanor refused. She told me that if I exposed what she had done, she would destroy everything.

Marcus looked at the photograph.

The young man beside his father was the missing son.

His brother.

The letter continued.

I have reason to believe Eleanor has been manipulating records for years. If she discovers that I have secured the trust for my grandchildren, she will do whatever is necessary to stop me.

Marcus's eyes filled.

I am sorry I did not protect this family sooner.

At the bottom was a name.

*Daniel Reed.*

Marcus looked at Detective Brooks.

“Is he alive?””

Whitaker nodded.

“I believe so.””

“Where is he?””

The attorney hesitated.

“He contacted me three days ago.””

Marcus stood.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“He asked me not to.””

“Where is he?””

Whitaker opened the final envelope.

Inside was a handwritten address.

Marcus recognized the location.

An old house outside Charleston.

The same property his father had once used as a workshop.

They arrived shortly before 10 p.m.

A light was burning in the front window.

Marcus approached the door.

He knocked twice.

A man opened it.

He was tall, with dark hair and a thin scar above his left eyebrow.

Marcus stared.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

The man looked at him for a long moment.

Then he stepped aside.

“Come in.””

Marcus entered.

“Daniel Reed?””

The man nodded.

“Your brother.””

Marcus felt strangely dizzy.

“I thought you were dead.””

Daniel gave a sad smile.

“That's what Eleanor wanted everyone to believe.””

Marcus looked around.

There were photographs on the walls.

Pictures of their father.

Pictures of the old house.

Pictures of Marcus as a child.

And one photograph of a baby.

“Why didn't you contact me?””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Because I was told you didn't want me.””

“By whom?””

“Your mother.””

Marcus sat down.

Daniel poured two glasses of water.

“She told me your father had abandoned me. That you were his only real son.””

Marcus shook his head.

“He wrote about you.””

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

“He searched for you.””

For the first time, Daniel's expression broke.

He sat down slowly.

“I spent twenty-five years believing he didn't care.””

Marcus handed him the letter.

Daniel read it.

His hands began trembling.

Then he covered his face.

“He was looking for me.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Silence filled the room.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“There's something you need to know about Eleanor.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Tell me.””

“She didn't just hide me. She changed my identity.””

“How?””

“She arranged for another family to raise me. Then she used my adoption records to manipulate inheritance claims.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she believed the family trust should belong to her.””

Daniel stood and walked toward the window.

“Your father discovered that she had been using false adoption records to move money between accounts. He threatened to report her.””

Marcus remembered Daniel Foster's confession.

“Did she kill him?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I don't know.””

“But you suspect her.””

Daniel nodded.

“I found a recording.””

He opened a cabinet and removed a small recorder.

“My father made it shortly before he died.””

Marcus pressed play.

His father's voice filled the room.

“Eleanor, I know what you've done.””

A woman's voice answered.

“You don't know anything.””

“I have the documents.””

“Then destroy them.””

“I won't.””

A chair moved.

Then his father spoke again.

“You've been moving children like property. You've been stealing from their trusts.””

Eleanor laughed.

“Those children don't even know who they are.””

“They're human beings.””

“And you think you can save them?””

“I can expose you.””

A long silence followed.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“You won't have the chance.””

The recording ended.

Marcus stared at the device.

Daniel looked down.

“The recording was made two days before your father died.””

Marcus's voice was barely audible.

“Why didn't you give this to the police?””

“I tried.””

“What happened?””

“The detective assigned to the case told me there was no evidence of a crime.””

Marcus looked at Detective Brooks.

She was already taking notes.

“We'll have this examined.””

Daniel nodded.

Then he reached into his pocket.

“I also have something else.””

He placed a small photograph on the table.

It showed Eleanor holding a newborn baby.

Beside her stood Claire.

Marcus recognized the hospital room.

The photograph had been taken six years earlier.

The newborn was Emily.

But there was another person in the background.

Vanessa.

Marcus stared.

“Why was Vanessa there?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because she was already part of the arrangement.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She was twenty-nine.””

“She was working for Eleanor.””

“As what?””

Daniel took a breath.

“An adoption coordinator.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Vanessa helped arrange Emily's disappearance?””

Daniel nodded.

“And yours wasn't the only family she targeted.””

At 11:30 p.m., Marcus returned to the hospital.

Claire was awake.

Ava was sleeping beside her.

He told Claire about Daniel Reed.

She listened quietly.

When he finished, she looked at him.

“Your father knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That Eleanor was dangerous.””

Marcus nodded.

“I think he was trying to stop her.””

Claire reached for his hand.

“Marcus, I need to tell you something.””

He sat down.

“What?””

“Emily isn't the only child Eleanor hid.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

Claire swallowed.

“Before Emily was born, I found another photograph in Eleanor's house.””

“Of whom?””

“A little boy.””

Marcus frowned.

“Daniel?””

“No.””

She looked directly at him.

“A boy who looked exactly like Ava.””

Marcus went cold.

“That's impossible.””

Claire shook her head.

“I thought so too.””

“Who was he?””

“I don't know.””

She took a breath.

“But Eleanor told me something once.””

“What?””

“That Ava wasn't the first child she had planned to take.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

Claire continued.

“She said your father had another secret child.””

He looked at her.

“Daniel Reed?””

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“Someone younger.””

Marcus stared at her.

“How many children are involved in this?””

Claire's voice broke.

“I don't know.””

Then she reached for the bedside table and took out a folded piece of paper.

“I found this inside Emily's old medical records.””

Marcus opened it.

It was a photocopy of a hospital registration form.

The patient's name was listed as *ELEANOR REED*.

The date was six years earlier.

The section marked relationship to child had been completed in handwriting.

It read:

*BIOLOGICAL MOTHER.*

Marcus stared.

“That means Emily…”

Claire nodded.

“Eleanor was listed as her mother.””

“But she didn't give birth to Emily.””

Claire looked away.

“That's what I thought.””

Marcus felt his stomach twist.

Then Claire whispered:

“Marcus, I think Eleanor may have used my pregnancy to cover up something much worse.””

His phone rang.

Detective Brooks.

“Mr. Reed, we have a development.””

“What?””

“We've arrested Daniel Foster.””

Marcus nodded.

“Good.””

“But he has made a statement.””

“What statement?””

“He claims Eleanor didn't just hide Emily.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“What else?””

“She arranged for a second baby to be born under a false identity.””

Marcus looked at Claire.

The detective continued.

“And that baby was registered as Ava Reed.””

Marcus felt his heart stop.

He looked at his sleeping daughter.

Then at Claire.

Neither of them spoke.

Detective Brooks lowered her voice.

“Mr. Reed, we need you to come to the station.””

“Why?””

“Because we need to establish whether Ava is biologically your daughter.””

Marcus stared at the phone.

Then he whispered:

“She's my daughter.””

The detective paused.

“Legally, yes. But we're investigating a possible birth-record substitution.””

Marcus looked at Ava.

His little girl.

The child he had carried into the hospital.

The child he had watched take her first steps.

The child who had screamed to save her mother.

He tightened his grip on her hand.

“Whatever that woman did,” he said, “Ava is my daughter.””

But the detective's next words changed everything.

“Mr. Reed, the second child's birth record lists you as the father, too.””
