Chapter 8: The Dead Man's Instructions
Marcus stared at the frozen screen.
His father's name was still displayed beneath Daniel's confession.
He felt as though someone had reached into his chest and pulled out his heart.
“My father died eleven years ago,” he whispered.
Detective Brooks closed the laptop.
“We need to establish when this video was recorded.””
“Daniel said my father ordered the first disappearance.””
“We don't know whether that's true.””
Marcus shook his head.
“My father was a good man.””
Brooks looked at him.
“Good people can have secrets.””
Marcus turned away.
He wanted to argue.
He wanted to defend the man who had taught him to ride a bicycle, helped him build his company, and sat beside him through every difficult moment of his childhood.
But the evidence was sitting in front of him.
A child had disappeared.
Money had been stolen.
And someone had planned a murder.
“Find Daniel,” Marcus said.
“We're already looking.””
“And find every document connected to my father's trust.””
The detective nodded.
“We will.””
Marcus looked toward the stairs.
“Where's Emily?””
“She is with a child protection specialist.””
“Can I take her to see Ava?””
“Not yet. We need to establish temporary arrangements.””
Marcus rubbed his face.
He had two daughters.
One had nearly lost her mother.
The other had spent six years believing he didn't want her.
He had no idea how to repair that.
But he knew he would never abandon either child again.
At noon, Marcus returned to the hospital.
Claire was sitting upright in bed.
Ava was beside her, holding her mother's hand.
“Daddy!””
Ava jumped up.
Marcus hugged her.
“How's Mommy?””
“She says she wants pancakes.””
Claire smiled weakly.
“Hospital food is terrible.””
Marcus laughed for the first time in nearly twenty-four hours.
Then he sat beside her.
“We found Emily.””
Claire's eyes filled immediately.
“She's alive?””
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
“At your old house. She's safe.””
Claire began crying.
“Can I see her?””
“We're working on it.””
Marcus took her hand.
“She asked why you never came for her.””
Claire covered her face.
“Oh, God.””
“I told her you didn't know where she was.””
Claire nodded.
“Thank you.””
Ava looked between them.
“Is Emily coming?””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
“Can she sleep in my room?””
He smiled.
“Maybe one day.””
Ava considered that.
Then she whispered:
“Will she like me?””
Marcus brushed her hair back.
“She already knows you're her sister.””
Ava smiled.
“Then I'll give her my pink blanket.””
Claire began crying again.
Later that afternoon, Detective Brooks called.
“Mr. Reed, we've located Daniel.””
Marcus stepped into the corridor.
“Where?””
“At a private airport outside Charleston.””
“Was he leaving?””
“He was preparing to board a charter flight.””
“Did you arrest him?””
“Not yet. He's agreed to cooperate.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he believes Vanessa intends to kill him.””
The detective paused.
“He also says he has information about your father.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Put him on the phone.””
A moment later, Daniel's voice came through.
“Marcus?””
“You have thirty seconds.””
Daniel sighed.
“I know how this looks.””
“You helped steal money from my company. You helped my mother hide my daughter. You were involved in Claire's attempted murder.””
“I didn't know about the pool.””
“You were in the recording.””
“I was there to collect documents.””
“What documents?””
“Your father's original trust agreement.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“Because it contained a clause that could destroy everything Vanessa and Eleanor had built.””
“What clause?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Your father created the trust so that no one could claim ownership of the children's inheritance unless both biological parents consented.””
Marcus stared at the wall.
“That's normal.””
“Not in this case. There was another condition.””
“What?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“The children had to be registered with their true parentage. If anyone falsified a birth certificate or concealed a child, the entire trust would transfer to an independent foundation.””
Marcus went still.
“Meaning?””
“Your mother and Vanessa would lose access to every dollar.””
“And how much money was in the trust?””
“Almost forty million.””
Marcus felt sick.
Forty million dollars.
Enough to destroy an entire family.
Enough to make people lie.
Enough to make someone disappear.
“Why did my father create that clause?””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he said:
“Because he knew Eleanor had been hiding something long before Emily was born.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“What?””
“Your father discovered that Eleanor had been paying people to falsify adoption records.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That's impossible.””
“I'm sorry.””
“Why didn't he report her?””
“Because the first child wasn't yours.””
Marcus stopped breathing.
Daniel continued.
“Your father had another son.””
Marcus didn't speak.
The hospital corridor seemed to stretch endlessly in front of him.
“My father had another child?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“I don't know his current name.””
“Daniel, stop playing games.””
“Your father discovered him through a private adoption agency. The boy was born before you.””
Marcus sat down.
“Why would my father hide that?””
“Because Eleanor had arranged the adoption.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
His mother.
Again.
Daniel continued.
“Your father found out that she had been transferring children between families to manipulate inheritance claims. He threatened to expose her.””
“And then?””
“He died.””
Marcus's head snapped up.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel took a breath.
“I don't believe your father died naturally.””
The words echoed in Marcus's mind.
He remembered the hospital.
The sudden heart attack.
The doctors saying there was nothing anyone could have done.
His mother crying beside the bed.
The funeral.
The years of grief.
“Do you have proof?””
“Your father recorded everything.””
“Where?””
“In a safe deposit box.””
“Which bank?””
Daniel gave him the name.
Then he added:
“There's one more thing.””
“What?””
“Vanessa knows about the recording.””
Marcus stood.
“Where is she?””
“Police custody.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You still think she's the only person involved?””
Marcus froze.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel whispered:
“Someone inside the police department has been helping her.””
The call ended.
Detective Brooks arrived minutes later.
Marcus told her everything.
She listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she looked deeply troubled.
“Daniel has made some serious allegations.””
“Can you verify them?””
“We'll need independent investigators.””
“Then get them.””
She nodded.
“I want you to understand something. If someone inside law enforcement is compromised, we need to be careful about what information we share.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Can I trust you?””
She met his eyes.
“Yes.””
He studied her face.
Then nodded.
“Find the safe deposit box.””
At 6:30 p.m., Marcus received a call from an attorney.
The lawyer introduced himself as Thomas Whitaker.
He represented the estate of Marcus's father.
“Mr. Reed, I've been trying to contact you.””
“Why?””
“Your father left instructions that were supposed to be delivered under specific circumstances.””
Marcus frowned.
“What circumstances?””
“The discovery of a hidden child or evidence of financial fraud.””
Marcus sat down.
“Who gave you these instructions?””
“Your father.””
“When?””
“Two months before he died.””
Marcus's pulse quickened.
“What did he leave?””
“A sealed envelope and a key.””
“To what?””
“A safe deposit box.””
Marcus remembered Daniel's call.
“Which bank?””
Whitaker named the same institution.
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Can I come tonight?””
“Yes. But there's something you should know.””
“What?””
“The instructions include a warning.””
“What warning?””
The attorney paused.
Then read the exact words.
“Tell my son that the woman who calls herself his mother is not the only person who knows how he was born.””
Marcus went cold.
“What does that mean?””
“I don't know, Mr. Reed.””
Then the attorney added:
“Your father also instructed me to tell you that if Emily was ever found, you should not trust her birth certificate.””
Marcus stared at the floor.
He looked toward Claire's room.
Then toward the family room where Ava was waiting.
His entire family history was collapsing.
And now even the identity of his children was being questioned.
He ended the call.
A message appeared immediately.
It was from an unknown number.
There was no text.
Only a photograph.
It showed a young man standing beside Marcus's father.
The young man looked about twenty-five.
He had Marcus's eyes.
And the same distinctive scar above his left eyebrow.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
YOUR BROTHER IS STILL ALIVE.
