Chapter 7: The Midnight Invitation

Officer Harris locked down the hospital floor.

Two uniformed officers were placed outside the girls' room, while another checked the parking garage.

I wanted to believe we were safe.

But every time an elevator opened, my heart jumped.

Olivia sat beside Sophie and Ruby, holding their hands.

The girls had started asking questions.

“Mommy, why are the police here?”” Sophie asked.

Olivia brushed her hair away from her face.

“Because some grown-ups have been making bad decisions.””

“Are we in trouble?””

“No, sweetheart.””

Ruby looked at me.

“Is Grandma Evelyn a bad grown-up?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Finally, I crouched beside her.

“Grandma Evelyn has done things that hurt people. But none of that is your fault.””

Ruby looked down at her necklace.

“Mommy says people can be nice on the outside and scary on the inside.””

Olivia closed her eyes.

I knew exactly where she had learned that.

A few minutes later, Officer Harris returned.

“We found the SUV.””

“Where?””

“Outside the employee parking entrance. The driver abandoned it.””

“Did you identify him?””

“Not yet. But we found something inside.””

He handed me a plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a hospital visitor badge.

The name printed on it was Patricia Miller.

Olivia stood so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.

“Patricia?””

Harris nodded.

“Do you know her?””

“She was the nurse who helped me escape six years ago.””

I stared at the badge.

“Is she here?””

“We haven't located her.””

Olivia took the bag and examined it.

“She wouldn't come back here voluntarily.””

“Why not?””

“Because she knew Evelyn had been looking for her.””

Harris looked at me.

“Mr. Cole, I need to ask you something. Does your mother have access to the hospital's administrative systems?””

“She has connections everywhere.””

“Could she have obtained the girls' medical information?””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“Then we need to move them.””

Within twenty minutes, the girls were placed in a private security vehicle operated by the police department.

Olivia and I followed in another car.

We were taken to a secure location outside downtown Atlanta.

It was an old government building with reinforced doors and a small number of occupied offices.

The girls were given a room with two beds, a television, and a basket of toys.

Sophie immediately picked up a stuffed rabbit.

Ruby sat beside her.

“Can we stay together?”” she asked.

“Of course,” I said.

For the first time that day, I saw both girls smile.

Olivia and I stepped into the hallway.

She held the USB drive in her hand.

“We need to listen to this.””

Harris brought in a laptop and connected it to a secure system.

The recording began with static.

Then my father's voice filled the room.

“October 3. If anyone is hearing this, it means I failed to protect my family.””

I froze.

It was unmistakably Robert Cole.

He sounded older than I remembered, exhausted and frightened.

“Evelyn believes she has the right to control everything I built. She believes the company, the trust, and even our grandchildren belong to her.””

A pause.

“She is wrong.””

Olivia gripped my hand.

My father continued.

“The twins were conceived through an embryo transfer. The biological material came from a private fertility program that I funded after a medical discovery in our family.””

I frowned.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“The program was intended to prevent the transmission of a hereditary condition. It was designed to give our descendants a healthy start, not to create a family heir.””

Olivia whispered, “Keep listening.””

My father's voice grew weaker.

“Evelyn discovered the existence of the program and demanded access to the embryos. She wanted a child whose genetic profile would qualify for the Cole inheritance arrangement.””

I felt sick.

“She believed one of the embryos carried a particular genetic combination that would make the child uniquely eligible for the trust. But she misunderstood the testing results.””

There was a rustling sound.

Then my father said something that made me look at Olivia.

“Both girls carry the marker. Neither is more valuable than the other. They are sisters, and the trust was established equally for them.””

I exhaled.

That was the truth.

Evelyn had spent six years trying to separate two children because she believed one was more valuable.

But my father had made sure they would inherit equally.

Then his voice changed.

“If Damien is listening, I need him to understand something. Evelyn didn't begin this scheme alone.””

A long silence followed.

“The person who helped her arrange the transfer was my wife's brother.””

Olivia looked at me.

“Your mother's brother?””

I nodded slowly.

My mother had a brother named Victor.

He lived in London.

I hadn't seen him in years.

The recording continued.

“Victor handled the legal arrangements. He introduced Evelyn to the clinic, arranged the falsified medical records, and helped conceal the financial transactions.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Why would my uncle do that?””

My father answered as if he could hear me.

“Because Victor believed the Cole family fortune should never pass to Damien's children.””

Then the recording stopped.

The laptop displayed a file directory.

Harris opened another document.

It was a scanned copy of a trust agreement.

Two names appeared beneath the heading.

*Sophie Olivia Cole.*

*Ruby Olivia Cole.*

Both were listed as equal beneficiaries.

There was another page.

A condition.

If either child was removed from the family without the consent of both parents, the entire trust would be frozen and transferred to an independent guardian until the children reached adulthood.

Evelyn had not simply been trying to control the money.

She had been trying to control the children before the trust became active.

Harris looked up.

“There's enough here to justify a deeper investigation.””

“Can we arrest her?””

“Not yet. We need to establish where the original documents are and identify everyone involved.””

I stared at the screen.

“Where are they?””

Olivia pointed to the bottom of the agreement.

“Your father listed a storage location.””

Harris zoomed in.

A street address appeared.

The old Cole estate.

My childhood home.

The place where my mother had asked us to come at midnight.

I laughed without humor.

“She wants us there because she knows the evidence is there.””

Olivia nodded.

“Your father probably kept the original records in his study.””

Harris closed the laptop.

“We're not going there without a warrant.””

I agreed.

But before we could discuss the next step, a phone rang.

It belonged to one of the officers.

He answered, listened, and suddenly stood.

“What?””

He turned toward Harris.

“Sir, there's been a breach.””

“What kind?””

“The hospital reported that someone accessed the girls' original birth records.””

“Who?””

The officer looked at the screen.

“An authorized administrator.””

Harris took the phone.

“Name?””

The officer hesitated.

Then he said:

“Evelyn Cole.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“She was here?””

“No, sir. She accessed the system remotely.””

Harris frowned.

“That's not possible. Her credentials were suspended.””

The officer checked again.

Then he looked up.

“Someone restored them.””

“Who?””

The officer read the name.

May you like

And Olivia whispered it before he finished.

“Victor.””
