Chapter 6: The Secret Hidden in Ruby's Birth

“Which one of our daughters?”” I asked.

Olivia looked toward the two little girls.

Sophie was sitting on the hospital bed, carefully coloring a picture of four people holding hands. Ruby was beside her, arranging crayons by color.

They looked so innocent.

So completely unaware that the adults around them had turned their lives into a battlefield.

Olivia lowered her voice.

“Damien, we need to talk somewhere private.””

“I'm not leaving the girls.””

“Then ask the nurse to stay with them.””

I hesitated.

Sophie looked up.

“Are you going somewhere, Mommy?””

Olivia immediately crossed the room and kissed her forehead.

“Just for a few minutes, sweetheart.””

“Are you coming back?””

Olivia's face crumpled.

“Always.””

I arranged for a nurse to remain with them while Olivia and I stepped into a small consultation room.

The moment the door closed, I turned toward her.

“Tell me everything.””

She sat down slowly.

“I was thirty-four weeks pregnant when your mother started visiting me without telling you.””

“Why?””

“She said she was worried about the babies. She kept asking whether I was taking certain vitamins, whether I'd been to the doctor, whether I'd noticed anything unusual.””

“That's normal behavior for a grandmother.””

Olivia shook her head.

“Not when she brings a lawyer and asks you to sign medical consent forms.””

I frowned.

“What forms?””

“She told me your father had established a medical trust for the children. She said it would cover every expense, but I needed to sign documents allowing a private clinic to oversee the pregnancy.””

“Did you sign?””

“No. I asked my doctor to review them.””

“What did he find?””

Olivia reached into her handbag and removed a folded piece of paper.

“He found that the documents weren't simply about medical care. They included language transferring certain reproductive and genetic records to a private foundation controlled by Evelyn.””

I stared at her.

“Why would my mother want that?””

“Because your father had been keeping something from her.””

Olivia explained that my father, Robert Cole, had discovered a genetic condition in his family years earlier.

It wasn't something that would necessarily affect every descendant. But it could be passed through generations.

My father had wanted genetic testing performed before the twins were born.

He had also wanted the results kept confidential.

“Your father was afraid Evelyn would use the information against the children,” Olivia said.

“Use it how?””

“She was obsessed with producing an heir who could eventually control the family company.””

I leaned back.

“My mother always wanted a grandson.””

“Exactly.””

“But we had two daughters.””

“And she believed that made them less valuable to her plans.””

I felt sick.

Olivia continued.

“Your father had discovered that the twins carried a rare genetic marker connected to his side of the family. One of the girls had a particular combination that made her eligible for a special inheritance arrangement.””

I stared at her.

“Which girl?””

“That's what Evelyn wanted to know.””

“But you said she stole Ruby because she knew which one carried the secret.””

Olivia nodded.

“Ruby's medical records were switched. Her original identity was concealed.””

“Why?””

“Because the private clinic had already tested the babies. Your mother wanted to know which child carried the marker before the trust became public.””

I looked at the paper in my hand.

“Did she find out?””

“I don't know.””

Olivia rubbed her temples.

“Your father died before he could explain everything. He left me a sealed envelope with instructions to open it only if something happened to him.””

“Where is it?””

“Evelyn took it.””

My stomach tightened.

“When?””

“The night I disappeared.””

I remembered the police report.

Olivia's car had been found abandoned near the Georgia state line.

There had been no explanation for the missing driver.

“What happened that night?””

Olivia took a long breath.

“I was driving to Savannah. Your father had arranged for me to meet an attorney who knew about the trust. But someone followed me.””

“Your mother?””

“I didn't see her. I only saw the headlights behind me. Then another car came from the opposite direction and forced me off the road.””

She paused.

“When I woke up, I was in a private hospital room. Evelyn was standing beside my bed.””

“What did she say?””

Olivia looked at me.

“She said you were dead.””

My hands curled.

“She showed me photographs of your car. She told me you had died trying to reach me.””

I swallowed.

“Why didn't you call the police?””

“I did.””

“What?””

“I begged a nurse to call them. But Evelyn had already arranged everything. The police who came to the hospital worked with her security company. They told me I was confused and that no missing-person report existed.””

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“How did you escape?””

“A nurse named Patricia helped me. She discovered the medical records had been altered. She helped me get out through the laundry entrance.””

“And Ruby?””

“Claire had already taken her.””

I thought about Claire lying in the hospital bed.

The woman who had taken my daughter and then spent six years hiding her from me.

“Why didn't you go back for her?””

Olivia's eyes filled.

“I tried.””

She reached into her bag and showed me a photograph of a small apartment building.

“I went to Claire's address. It was empty. She had disappeared with Ruby.””

“Did you think she'd betrayed you?””

“For a while. Then she sent me a message saying Ruby was safe. She told me not to come looking because Evelyn had people watching.””

Olivia wiped her cheeks.

“I believed her.””

I sat beside her.

“Why didn't you find me?””

“I did.””

I turned.

“What?””

“Three years ago, I found your address. I watched you take Sophie to school.””

My chest tightened.

“You saw us?””

She nodded.

“I sat across the street in a parked car. I watched you carry her backpack. You stopped to tie her shoe. Then you kissed her forehead before she went inside.””

She began crying again.

“I wanted to run to you. But I saw Evelyn's security car parked behind yours.””

I remembered that morning.

A black sedan had been parked near our driveway.

I'd assumed it belonged to a neighbor.

Olivia continued.

“Your mother had told me that if I approached you, she would have Sophie taken away. She had people who could make a child disappear without leaving a trace.””

I closed my eyes.

For six years, we had both been living under the same threat.

Then Olivia reached into her bag again.

This time, she removed a small USB drive.

“There's something else.””

“What?””

“Patricia gave me this before she disappeared.””

“What's on it?””

“Copies of the original hospital records. The genetic testing. The transfer documents. And a recording.””

“Of whom?””

“Your father.””

My heart began racing.

“Does it explain everything?””

“I haven't listened to the entire recording.””

“Why not?””

“Because the first few minutes mention a name I never expected to hear.””

“What name?””

She looked directly at me.

“Your mother's maiden name.””

I frowned.

“What about it?””

Olivia lowered her voice.

“Your father says Evelyn wasn't the only person involved in the arrangement.””

I stared at her.

“Who else?””

Before she could answer, the consultation room door opened.

Officer Harris stepped inside.

“Mr. Cole, Mrs. Cole, we have a problem.””

I stood.

“What happened?””

“Your mother has filed an emergency petition claiming the children were unlawfully removed from her custody.””

I almost laughed.

“She has no custody rights.””

“Normally, I'd agree. But she's attached a document claiming both girls are beneficiaries of a private family trust, and that she has temporary guardianship authority under an old agreement.””

Olivia went pale.

“That agreement is forged.””

Harris nodded.

“We're checking it.””

Then he showed me his phone.

A photograph of our hospital room appeared on the screen.

It had been taken from the corridor.

Someone had photographed the girls through the open doorway.

Beneath the image was a message:

Bring the children to the estate. You have until midnight.

I looked at the timestamp.

It had been sent less than three minutes earlier.

Then Harris showed me the sender.

It was a phone number registered to Cole Security Group.

And attached to the message was a second photograph.
