Chapter 7: The Letter My Mother Left for Someone Else

The next morning, Dad drove me to Robert's office.

Jordan and Caleb stayed home with a security officer who had been assigned to the house.

Nobody had slept.

The sky over Atlanta was gray, and rain streaked the windshield as Dad drove through downtown.

He kept both hands on the steering wheel.

I watched the buildings pass.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“Do you think Mom knew Vanessa would become part of our family?””

He glanced at me.

“I don't know.””

“Do you think she knew what Vanessa was doing?””

He didn't answer immediately.

“Your mother was very careful with people she didn't trust.””

“Then why didn't she tell you?””

He sighed.

“Maybe she thought she could fix things herself.””

I looked down at my mother's yellow towel in my lap.

I had brought it with me.

It made me feel less alone.

Robert was waiting when we arrived.

He led us into a private conference room and placed a thick envelope on the table.

The paper was old.

The edges had turned yellow.

Across the front, in my mother's handwriting, were two words.

*VANESSA COLE.*

Dad stared at it.

“Open it.””

Robert shook his head.

“There's a problem.””

“What now?””

“The letter was deposited with instructions that it remain sealed until Maya turned eighteen or until a specific legal condition was met.””

“What condition?””

Robert looked at me.

“Evidence of an attempted fraudulent transfer from the trust.””

Dad leaned forward.

“Then the condition has been met.””

Robert nodded.

He carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter, a photograph, and a small USB drive.

Dad picked up the letter.

“Read it,” he said.

Robert unfolded the pages.

Then he began.

Vanessa,

If you are reading this, it means you have once again entered my family's life.

Dad's jaw tightened.

Robert continued.

I know what happened with the inheritance. I know about the documents you asked Elena to sign. I also know you have been telling people that I stole money from our father's estate.

I looked at Dad.

He shook his head slowly.

Robert kept reading.

The truth is that you attempted to move money from an account that was never yours. When I refused, you threatened to expose Elena's private circumstances and make her lose everything.

I gave you one chance to stop.

You didn't.

Robert paused.

The next paragraph was underlined.

If you have married David, then you have found another person whose trust you can use. Do not mistake his kindness for permission.

Dad closed his eyes.

Robert continued.

I am leaving evidence of the original financial arrangement on the enclosed USB drive. It contains the signed documents, the correspondence, and the statement you made to me in Savannah.

The final paragraph was shorter.

I hope Maya grows up surrounded by people who love her without wanting anything from her.

Robert lowered the letter.

Nobody spoke.

Dad picked up the photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing outside a bank with another woman.

The woman was Elena.

Between them was a man I didn't recognize.

On the back, Mom had written:

Savannah — March 2018. The day Vanessa promised to leave us alone.

Dad looked at Robert.

“Who is the man?””

Robert studied the picture.

“I believe that's Thomas Cole.””

“Vanessa's father?””

“Yes.””

Dad turned the photograph over again.

“What happened in Savannah?””

Robert connected the USB drive to his laptop.

There were dozens of files.

Bank statements.

Scanned documents.

Emails.

And a video recording.

The video was dated three months before Mom died.

Robert clicked it.

A woman's voice filled the room.

It was my mother.

I hadn't heard her voice in four years.

My hands flew to my mouth.

She appeared on the screen wearing a blue sweater, sitting at the kitchen table.

Her hair was tied back.

She looked tired, but she was smiling.

“Hello, sweetheart,” she said.

I started crying.

Dad reached for my hand.

Mom continued.

“If you're watching this, then something happened that I was afraid might happen.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“Maya, I hope you're older now. I hope you're happy. And I hope your father has given you every opportunity I dreamed about for you.””

She paused.

Then her expression changed.

“There's something I need you to know about Vanessa.””

Dad leaned closer.

Mom folded her hands.

“She wasn't a stranger when I met her. She was someone I trusted once. Someone I helped when she was in trouble.””

My heart beat faster.

Mom continued.

“Vanessa and Elena were involved in a business arrangement years ago. They both made mistakes, but Vanessa eventually began using Elena's identity to access money that didn't belong to her.””

Robert paused the recording.

He looked at Dad.

“This may explain the secondary beneficiary issue.””

Dad nodded.

“Continue.””

The video resumed.

Mom took a breath.

“I don't want you to hate anyone because of what I'm saying. I just want you to understand that people sometimes hide behind family because they believe family won't ask questions.””

She looked down.

Then she looked back at the camera.

“David, if you're watching this, please don't blame yourself. I should have told you sooner.””

Dad's eyes filled.

Mom continued.

“I made one mistake. I allowed Vanessa to believe I would always protect her from the consequences of her decisions.””

She leaned closer.

“I can't do that anymore.””

The video ended.

I sat motionless.

For the first time since Mom died, I had heard her speak directly to me.

Robert removed the USB drive.

“There's another file.””

He opened a document titled:

*FINAL TRUST INSTRUCTIONS.*

The first page showed the original financial arrangement.

The second page showed the list of authorized beneficiaries.

And the third contained a clause I couldn't understand.

Robert read it twice.

Then he looked at Dad.

“David, this changes everything.””

“What?””

“The trust was never supposed to pass to Elena.””

Dad frowned.

“Then why was she listed?””

Robert pointed to the clause.

“Because Elena was appointed as an independent protector of Maya's inheritance.””

I blinked.

“What does that mean?””

Robert explained.

“Your mother wanted someone outside the household to oversee the trust if you were ever unable to do so.””

Dad looked at the document.

“Why would Claire think I couldn't?””

Robert pointed to a paragraph.

“Because of the provision that activates if the trustee becomes financially or legally compromised.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Was Dad compromised?””

Robert looked at the signature on the amended trust.

“Someone may have attempted to make it appear that he was.””

Dad leaned back.

“Vanessa.””

“Possibly.””

Robert opened the last file.

It was an audio recording.

A conversation between Mom and Vanessa.

The recording began with Vanessa's voice.

“You can't keep pretending you know everything, Claire.””

Mom answered calmly.

“I know enough.””

“You don't understand what happens if I lose this money.””

“Then you should have thought about that before taking it.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You think David will believe you?””

“I think he'll believe the evidence.””

There was a chair scraping.

Then Vanessa spoke again.

“You should be careful. People who make enemies sometimes discover how quickly their lives can change.””

The recording stopped.

Dad stood.

“We're taking this to the police.””

Robert nodded.

“Absolutely.””

But before he could close the laptop, another file appeared.

It had been hidden inside a folder marked PRIVATE.

The title was:

*IF VANESSA CONTACTS MAYA.*

Robert opened it.

A scanned letter appeared.

It was addressed to me.

May you like

And beneath my mother's signature was a sentence that made my blood run cold.

The truth about your biological family is not what your father believes.
